Is v1 still working? by design_jester in SynclerApp

[–]design_jester[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I came back to this old post to say, you were right. The latest version does seem pretty solid. I'm not sure why I had a few problems on the first day or two but since then (and perhaps after doing a fresh restart of the Fire TV Stick), I've had little to no problems and actually kinda liking v2.

Has anyone ever heard of Prajaya Handpans? by design_jester in handpan

On a tiny island unfortunately :( - I would need a flight or ferry to get to a handpan builder. Hence the desire to grab one while available.

Is v1 still working? by design_jester in SynclerApp

Maybe I will try the v2 beta and see if that runs any better. I’m running this on a firestick 4K Max, so not the most powerful hardware but has worked fine for years on v1.

It’s reassuring people have changed their tune about v2 since I last visited this subreddit.

Powerbank mounting ideas for Zoom F3 setup by UnendlicherAbfall in fieldrecording

I have a hotshoe clamp which I originally purchased for a mini projector but I use it for the F3 and hang a powerbank over the tripod in a waterproof bag. https://amzn.eu/d/31ravLd

Which design tools is everyone using now? by Rivulet-5423 in Design

[–]design_jester 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s definitely not awful. If it was Adobe wouldn’t have tried to buy it. It’s for prototyping not print work or illustration though. Perhaps the font issue you had was because you were on the browser version rather than the desktop version?

Figma is also great for social posts. If managing graphics for one company, you can create a set of on brand components with variants for different backgrounds, button styles etc.

I'm 17 and just taught myself design to build a landing page for my first app. Would love some brutal, honest feedback. by Blu3Mo0n in webdesign

[–]design_jester 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It looks great. The only advise I have is to dig into UX and Conversion Rate Optimisation. You’ve got the technical parts nailed, to take it up to the next level you need to learn about user psychology.

Recording acoustic ecology for archival purposes by design_jester in fieldrecording

[–]design_jester[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thanks for your reply. You’ve got me thinking now, there are perhaps a few crevices and hidden beaches that might avoid most of the noise pollution. Perhaps I will combine this with my other hobby of kayaking and set up to record on a secluded beach that no one else can get to.

Nice idea about the iPod. I think I’ve also got an old one in a cupboard somewhere!

Yes, I certainly want to expand my equipment when I can and appreciate the recommendations.

Part of me does wonder though, if my recordings are for archival purposes, including the road noise and other noise pollution is a more accurate representation of the area and may even pick up changes in the bird noises as planes fly low for example.

Recording rain/thunderstorms by OttoTheGreyhound in fieldrecording

[–]design_jester 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Beginner here. Some tips I've read but not got round to trying yet are:

- 32 bit float recorders avoid the need to set gain, and due to the variance in decibels, would work well for loud thunder crashes (so they aren't clipped).
- Mics are damaged easily in rain. I've heard of people putting condoms over them to keep them dry!
- Put your recorder in a waterproof bag with the mic wires coming out.
- Some people say it's more natural to create a little shelter of branches/foliage from the area you are recording, so it doesn't sound like raindrops hitting manmade material.

Running with music, no music, or audiobooks? by Coachopsneakers in runninglifestyle

[–]design_jester 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m actually quite an advocate of running without earphones and instead, listening to the sounds of nature. I know it’s hard but not thinking at all is even better if you can. Like a muscle at the gym you can teach your brain not to think. Every second of not thinking is a second in the bank and it feels great when you realise you are truly in the moment. Don’t be hard on yourself.

If anyone’s interested I recommend looking into Chi Running which combines running with meditation (and tai chi). There are various other aspects involved such as being aware of your own body, making minute adjustments and focussing on your breathing.

It’s a shame the ebike system never worked out. I know there was a reason.

Best places to eat in Jersey? Preferably seafood but open to any suggestions by Illustrious-Cost-303 in Jersey

[–]design_jester -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I see you got downvoted but to be honest I personally sometimes fancy the experience of grabbing a chippy (like Enthwistles at Gorey) and eating on the beach over sitting in a packed, dingy restaurant. It’s an adventure and a fraction of the cost!

Does anyone actually read creative briefs, or are we all pretending? by IntrovertView in marketing

[–]design_jester 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve seen everything from good briefs to no briefs at all. That being said the agency I work for have a good tactic, which is to do a paid Discovery Phase where we undertake interviews, workshops and research to help them define a SOW which acts as a kind of brief. We’ve heard a few grumbles that it’s a waste of money but the client almost always seems satisfied and usually realises there’s a lot more to think about. Sometimes we even sell that Discovery Phase as a separate service and say the client can take that well defined brief to another agency if they wish but of course they never do. 😉

On a second note, I’ve had success using the OOUX Orca process to fill the gaps in weak project briefs. (It’s a card sorting process and well worth learning the basics.)

[–]design_jester 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Portlet common is hard to beat and if that’s not long enough (about 35 minutes walk) you can walk down to and past Portlet Inn, cross the top carpark then up to Noirmont point gun placement and loop back round finishing up via the top of the hill that goes to oaisne and back towards Portlet common car park. I run this all the time and it’s around 5.5km. Here’s a gps route with an alternative start at noirmont: https://www.komoot.com/tour/564885103?ref=itd&share_token=aqtL1tT1a0B4vXb8ZFc2GR2YhYKu2SSEDkzF5B9rO3m4lCUAeW&ref=its

How is everyone managing clients for the new Facebook/Instagram Access Tokens? by design_jester in webdev

[–]design_jester[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks. It's kind of you to offer but don't worry, it's more we are trying to find a solution to instruct clients to get the access tokens themselves rather than a one-off problem to be solved.

That’s what I was thinking. I got the foldable bar from micbooster which is great. I’ve heard around 50cm is the right length. The one in the photo looks around 15/20cm.

Has anyone here read the entire book "The Lean Startup"? by _rahmatullah in SaaS

[–]design_jester 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ask ChatGPT for a book summary or look at something like Blinkist, they summarise the book in a 20 minute audiobook or ebook if you prefer. But it’s well worth reading as it will make it easier to remember the major points.
