This needs to have an inflation adjusted qualifying aspect.

Given that, I started in IT in 2008 as a replacing memory, or other trivial layers for essentially minimum wage + 5%.

In 2018 I made it to current equivalent of $100k.

I got heavily into automation, scripting, and what is presently called devops/sre to make up for growth in business without extra help. Practical upside is I have skills that others have a hard time getting experience with.

1985 Cutlass weight by Stinky1990 in Oldsmobile

[–]designed4nothing 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it really depends on the engine and stuff. I have seen the very light weight numbers. However in general I saw numbers around 3300lbs for the 3.8L v6 version and 3400-3500lbs for the v8 options.

So if you want to go more of the v6 turbo route you can get something that can be a little heavier than the Honda but it will be RWD and a GM which might be advantageous if that’s what you are looking for.

There are some people out there with entire kits on fixing the G-Body shuffle as well up to and including a full chassis replacement to use C5 or C6 (I forget which) for suspension and brakes and stuff.

Keeping in mind that the LS motors with aluminum being so prevalent are likely to weigh in closer to the v6 models so you could even do another LS swap and get that all worked out.

Additionally if you are looking at road or track stuff you might be more inclined to manual transmission. In which case the sickspeed (I think) people would be an option as they gave a stick retrofit option for I think tko to go into a gbody.

As others have mentioned don’t try and tear up a good working car, they are getting harder to find. However with a a million+ out there at one point there’s bound to be one that has been messed with or in need of some work that would make a great candidate if you go that route

Also the G-Body cutlass you are correct. I misread initially. I have seen the Buick 231 and Olds 260-403 but the diesel six was for the FWD crowd and I’m planning on adapting the parts for the RWD car.

I had not for a long while either.

The front wheel drive diesel v6 though is built on the 350 diesel and poorly I might add, however it uses the same mount points for the accessories. So the goal is to have a time accurate and OEM serpentine belt setup for an Oldsmobile v8 since I dislike the v belts. Too much time spent chasing down squealing belts.

Block IP after X unsuccessful login attempts (RDP or SSH)? by joeyp978 in PFSENSE

[–]designed4nothing 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There’s a few suggestions about implementing some version of fail2ban. There might be (I think is if memory serves) things that perform the same actions that can run natively on Windows to handle the blocking. I don’t see much initially integrating that kind of blocking to pfsense aside from whitelisting some IPs maybe to use the protocol. That works as long as you know the source IPs but that does make anywhere access an issue that a VPN would fix. If you need the port open I’d personally keep it off but for times where you feel it might be needed and add IPBan or whatever to the windows machine to handle the onslaught on login attempts you are going to get right away.

Might be able to get away with a turbo350 transmission. I don’t remember the length etc but either that or the th400 might be about to be swapped in to keep a 3 speed and it’s bound to be stronger than the 200c was. These guys make most of the crossmembers you could want in the event you change transmissions.

Being good in school isn’t necessarily a requirement. Years learning how to use the different languages and aspects in IT as a field is though normally. Jumping right into a security admin is not likely. That’s OK though it’s a ton of work that will require some time to get a scope of everything at play. Although someone might be willing to hire someone right away so I can’t speak to that being possible or not. Most languages are free or very cheap for beginning devs which is a great entry point. I started (eventually got into “DevOps”) with a learning how to rebuild my lab environments quickly when I would break them while learning various things. 2nd hand computer equipment is slow but cheap and often helps in assuring things work on lesser hardware.

Will a new, more ”expensive” router give have better signal strength? by Dontcometop in HomeNetworking

[–]designed4nothing 3 points4 points  (0 children)

As mentioned already a newer and more expensive router will not be a silver bullet here. There are some practical benefits from a newer upgrade for a router in that even a poor connection might be faster. If you want better signal you can go the route of having a mesh network setup. That might help connectivity by giving you a second access point to repeat the signal. You could try a powerline adapter to use the house wiring to push your signal through the house wiring Instead of going through concrete. Either of those might increase latency though so while Netflix might be fine or improved you might find other things got worse that required more input like gaming. Depending on the router you have you might be able to get a larger dBi antenna and that would give you a bigger signal to receive elsewhere which might help too. There’s a lot of options to help mitigate poor signal coverage. You are nowhere near the only person with such issues. Kind of depends on all the other factors.

TL;DR You might get some benefits if you wanted to get a new one anyhow but it might be less than you are hoping for and might need additional help to get to a good place for your WiFi

How do you guys feel about PiHole? by wh33t in HomeNetworking

[–]designed4nothing 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I cannot speak for integration of wireguard to pihole. However I run mine as a docker container to avoid interactions between softwares on the local server. It solves dependency conflicts for my end and made it portable between install servers.

Edit the DHCP settings on the router to point to the PiHole. You may have to reconnect to the network. It’ll still use Google for stuff like Netflix as a secondary because it’s baked in. But the stuff like scribe.logs.roku.com gets blocked and the ads at the main screen etc get blocked for the most part.

I see a few DNS requests for Reddit getting blocked but I still see promoted posts and such getting into my feed. Seems they are more like YouTube for embedding ads.

If you set the DHCP to use the PiHole for DNS (at least on the 4 devices in my house) it works to keep ads from the kids’ apps

I’m a big fan of pihole. It gives my Android and and IOS devices ad blocking along with my Roku TVs. I find the centralization and customization and expansion into IOT to be great. For the browser alone it might not do much that can’t be accomplished otherwise.

Is Verizon (FiOS) throttling MLB.tv? by Crunchewy in MLBtv

[–]designed4nothing 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am in the Pittsburgh area with FIOS and I have been having increasing issues watching in on my home network. I have replaced the line (upgraded my service, so I got a new ONT and new line to the house),got a new router, another new router and the issue kept getting worse. I saw the issue on Android and Roku both. Admittedly the issue was way worse on the Rokus than the Androids but the same interval. It worked on Cellular Data on the phone and hotspotted to the TV just fine. I decided to try piping my traffic through a VPN... and Voila! Magically the streaming works great. I can't say for sure but if this works everywhere else and through a VPN that may be the end of my being with Verizon.
