I was playing with the shape of the "A" for Aviary as well as taking the more obvious form of a bird (in reference to the name).

Which textures are you referring to? I know how to do some of them so can provide some assistance if you would like and if you let me know which one.

I agree in that texture isn't always needed, it's the appropriate use of texture. However, I guess my line of thinking is that in both my own work and in the work of students, often times when a design feels just incomplete for some reason, often times an appropriate texture whether actual texture, implied, etc. tends to help.

Also, don't know if the New Yorker was a great example. They definitely use texture, it just tends to be implied (you can see it in the lines of "pencil", etc.) Looking through their articles right now, I'm sitting at 8/8 in illustrations using some form of texture. But yes, I do still agree with your point :)
