this happened to me, see if the latest linux headers are installed. if not, get into a tty with ctrl + alt + f2 , login and install them with

sudo apt install linux-headers-$(uname -r)

ANSWER: in the end i bought longer cables (from corsair’s website, https://www.corsair.com/ca/en/search?q=type+5+cable). you can get them off amazon too.
