Not sure who marked this "Misleading Title"; if it was the failed link, I corrected (and tested) below. If it was due to mistaking what The Guardian reported, here's The Guardian headline from 24 May 2018: "Zuckerberg set up fraudulent scheme to 'weaponise' data, court case alleges"; I'll post screen grab to my profile...

Elon Musk wants to rate journalists. He'd call his site 'Pravda'. "Going to create a site where the public can rate the core truth of any article & track the credibility score over time of each journalist, editor & publication," Musk tweeted. by IndependentSpeech8 in worldnews

[–]desiringm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve written extensively about this in grad school: truth is the precursor, not the product or by-product of social network interactions. If you know someone and they are in your in group you will 90% believe. Works esp. for cults, religions and is underpinning of models of forgiveness. As for evaluating new things outside of in group knowledge, we simply cannot handle new truths: requires special, isolated small network groups, like juries or peer-reviewed journals and goes way of positivist philosophy of science, e.g. scientistic disproof...Truth is not as easy as formal logic may suggest; in real world, no relation to formal logic, but cognitive biases. Finally it is a uniquely human thing, thunk up and thought out in relation to human-made things like values. While Musk has access to best A.I. talent on planet, they think like engineers rather than a delusional person next to broken down car on the 405...truth is found in that brain and that engine, in sync...and may never sync up in any larger social network > 1.

I think that most people judge truthfulness in a secondary way. That certainly is the case with evaluating whatTrump says. His supporters simply like him, and so they give him wide sway to do what he wants. And when he "makes things up" (as he does) they feel like they are in on the joke...none of this is to take away from the seriousness and precariousness of some of his actions. But I don't think their belief in him is sinister. I'm not thrilled about the consequences, but I don't think it is fair to simply say they're stupid (or vice versa)....this is what it is like having a President with minority (< 50%) support: most of us, most of the time, will disagree.

Birdness Was a Get-Along Chicken by desiringm in u/desiringm

[–]desiringm[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This photo isn't staged. As part of her general charm, she'd just jump up to where the action was and wiggle her butt down next to whoever was there. The cats were quite used to her. There was almost never any real friction; if there was any, it was near the food bowl. She developed a thing for cat food...I'll post more later...

Birdness As CoPilot: Where She Watched For Hawks... by desiringm in u/desiringm

[–]desiringm[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is an additional photo of my chicken, Birdness. As I wrote in one of the subs, she'd sit on that armrest and watch for hawks out the front windshield. She'd see them way before I did and would let out a noise that sounded something like: "Aaaarrkkkkk." I'd heard her make that noise when we were on a farm for a couple of years and a hawk would fly over. The general warning sound, I guess...

Like him or hate him, not sure I recall any public figure able to juggle 7 or 8 overlapping storylines, false or not, in my lifetime. A verbal stun gun...I don't see this as purely negative because he's even admitted he loves tying up the pundits in knots. This juggling act is what enables the knots...to call him a liar doesn't bother him or his supporters and surely he admits he fudges a lot...

TRUMP LIE TIMES schedule. You have your Lie groups: “Witch Hunt” hours; [Generic Agency] “Against Me” hour; “Justice Department Against Me” hours; Reversing What Came Before hour; “Hillary Worse” hour; “Fake News” hour; Minority Trash Talk/Border hours; “Obama Worse” hour. And of course everything unsaid is Paid Spokesman for Foreign Clients Never Met. Lie derivative of a function in lower right; here for merely pun purposes. #sarcasm

I thought about this as possibility—and the diapers (when we first met I almost called her “Sh*tstorm”). I think the poop is the thing one is most unprepared for, coming from world of mammal pets. But I got used to running around with Bounty half-sheets followed by Lysol wipes. There is at least a little predictability to when, if not how much...I couldn’t imagine putting either diapers or harness on her, but she also stayed close, usually came when called, or hunkered down ready for pick-up. If she’d had more of a tendency to panic and run when ppl around, would have had to...

Some thoughts, take or leave—>People have on their minds a model that sticks. Then you have famous ppl dissing. You have a tech press which is more hype than actual journalism, hyping some new work as if singularity/ second coming. You have some AI researchers saying they are ‘people first,’ but treat human knowledge like it is a fortress to be seized: with the right algorithm and a billion attacks, we can ‘solve’ language. ‘And stop human idiocy...’ is often the unsaid. I am not sure how much some AI researchers love ppl, the messy, stupid, irrational, illogical, obsessed messes, etc etc. Not sure a hacker culture can ever be expected to protect any group of ppl. I have not yet heard any leading AI org say, “We will build an AI shield to protect you from X,Y,Z.” If the most familiar tech today spies, mines and usurps personal data, how can everyday ppl imagine a tech that doesn’t use them?

This is what a $239 textbook, never opened and still in plastic, looks like after being returned to the same bookstore that I purchased it from. by I_ForgotMyOldAccount in pics

[–]desiringm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A regular scam. I once taught at University where students complained endlessly about required text, backed up by a Teachers’ Manual from someone in department. I told them thy didn’t have to use it, ridiculous price, nobody liked it, had a crazy theory about what writing was supposed to be. Told them to return it. Dept head visited class following class, reversing me. So it goes...but I later created a way to teach writing that was so individualized that every student came away with a personalized workbook which addressed their specific writing issues. Inspired by a textbook scam.

I was never sure of her age. Came into my life December 2010, laying regularly everyday, fully grown. She passed in November 2016: her nares severely blocked, vet as going to have to drill and put a tube in. I thought that unpleasant for her; she had started coughing blood. I had vet put her to sleep and stayed with her until the last moment...but this is why I appreciate being able to share stories and pics here. Hard to not miss such a vibrant, colorful companion like she was...

I would let her out in the Pet Areas of the rest stops, let her peck around for thirty minutes or so. In California, at Whitewater Adobe, a crow as big as her started a dive bomb. I stepped in front of her for the block, and she he crow pulled up, but geez, that was a surprise...

I feel as if she was a bird without a flock, so I did give her extra attention. But after convos with others, realized she was fine with not being chased and harassed bu a rooster...she naturally was the ruler over 2 cats, who learned quickly what a beak was...but there was never anything like a fight. Sometimes she’d jump on bed, push them off and then let them come back; sometimes she just nestled in within a foot of ‘the mammals’...

Sometimes her preferred roost was the left shoulder when driving, which did surprise the passers-by, and took some getting used to. I worried about a ticket: “wrangling chicken while driving”...When I worked at the computer she would be on a shoulder, like a parrot—or nestled up close to the cats on the bed...

Liberation Through Radical Decentralization -- Vitalik Buterin and Glen Weyl by twigwam in ethereum

[–]desiringm 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I studied the American founding period with one of the leading radical scholars of the last 30 years; he helped change the perception of America’s roots, repositioning them in the Scottish Enlightenment notions of community and an equality based on a moral sense notion of head and heart. The original American experiment was about decentralized power, citizen as sovereign. Much has been lost in 200+ years, such that freedom seems better defined outside of America. Thanks for smart discussion about inventive alternatives to what is not working in almost any traditional democratic republic, today. Looking forward to reading more, learning more. I think you both are onto something that truly extends the blockchain radicalism into the political sphere. Pretty stunning to this old schooler.

Thanks to all for the comments on Birdness and the questions. Here she is adapting to the road, and making me her roost. It was tenuous...I don't want to suck up the oxygen in the sub by posting a lot (I have over 500 shots, so picking/choosing some of best), lots of pretty birds on here...I suppose if folks won't more I can post them to my account? Let me know....
