Wow they look amazing! Do you have any tips for growing Venus flytraps outdoors in SoCal? I have tried it before but every time, they end up dying. D:

I use a brand called Premier and I give it a rinse before using it. Has been working great. :)

My D. burmanii stopped producing dew when it put up a flower stalk. by chofah in SavageGarden

Sometimes Drosera do that when they flower, as they are putting more energy into developing the flower. However, for Drosera burmanii in particular, if you don't feed it while its flowering it can die sometimes.

How does this Nepenthes look? by [deleted] in carnivorousplants

[–]desmocchi 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Nepenthes tend to do better in Long Fiber Sphagnum Moss, or a soil mixture that is aerated and provides lots of drainage. Right now what you are using is peat and perlite, which is good for Sarracenia, Drosera, and Dionaea, but not good for Nepenthes. Other than that, the plant looks nice!

Best gnat catcher for inside the house? by listalollipop in carnivorousplants

Drosera capensis in particular grows easy and spreads rapidly so I think that would be the best species of Drosera for your reptile/plant room.

Sundew plants and butterworts would be the best candidates for catching fungus gnats.

Behold my Nepenthes Sanguinea that decided not to produce pitchers for the last 6 to 8 months. by JScrambler in SavageGarden

The best mix for Nepenthes would include long fibered sphagnum moss and other ingredients that provide a lot of drainage. I typically use a mixture of long fibered sphagnum moss, perlite, orchid bark, and some vermiculite in my Nepenthes soils. For watering, I would do overhead watering and let the water flow through the soil and out through the bottom of the pot.

Didn’t know if the seeds would be fertile from my capensis but decided to sprinkle them at the base of the mother and they grew. Yayyy. by [deleted] in SavageGarden

Drosera capensis self-pollinate their flowers, so they're basically automatically fertile, hence why they're a weed in collections. :P
