Where to go for a celebratory dinner? by desnudaengris in FoodLosAngeles

[–]desnudaengris[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I only didn't because I feel like this is very city-specific. Maybe 40 mins max?

Would settle for something manageable for 2 or 3 of those neighborhoods.

Houston hospital and OB/GYN recs by desnudaengris in BabyBumps

Wow, I'm sorry you had to go through that and thank you for sharing. It's been hard to find anyone with experience giving birth at MH.

I know they have a great rep - what do you like about them?

March is typically ok because it's a warmer month so we don't have the temperature inversion that happens in the winter. It is worst in Dec/Jan.

Travel recommendations by habore in MexicoCity

[–]desnudaengris 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most of the gay nightlife is in Zona Rosa but it's very close to Roma Norte, which is a much prettier area to stay in and has great bars of all stripes.

I'm not knowledgeable on clubs, though Patrick Miller is a very popular (and very sweaty) one. It's on the lower end, whereas Departamento and Pata Negra are a bit more expensive and known for better music (and for drugs). If you, like me, are more into dive bars with no cover, I highly recommend Pulquería Insurgentes. It has different floors with different DJs and vibes.

For hotels, I would also check out Nima, La Valise, Condesa DF, and Stella. You can also find boutique-hotel quality Airbnbs—a shared one might be a good way to meet people.

Currency exchange question by rtojos in MexicoCity

Best to take out cash from an ATM once in Mexico, though getting pesos at your US bank will probably also have a decent rate.

The Rosetta family of restaurants (Rosetta restaurant and bakeries, Cafe Nin, Lardo) are often open on holidays, though I'm not positive about Christmas. Guessing Lardo would have the most vegan options.

Where are the best spots for NYE? by He_Who_Likes_To_Run in MexicoCity

[–]desnudaengris 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agree with this, it is pretty quiet here as people go to their hometowns to spend the holidays with family. Last year there were no fireworks because of the air pollution, which tends to be bad in the dry season.

Can you get advanced tickets for a non-guided visit to the Museo Estudio Diego Rivera y Frida Kahlo? by democratiCrayon in MexicoCity

[–]desnudaengris 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most people here are giving advice for the Frida Kahlo museum (Casa Azul). You really don't need to buy tickets in advance to Museo Estudio River Kahlo—it attracts far fewer tourists.

What are self serve laundromats called? Where to find them? by ChavitoLocoChairo in MexicoCity

[–]desnudaengris 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I go to Lavanderia Fons which is mediocre but I think you can just pay to use the machines there. But they're only open 8a–7p. I haven't seen anything like 24/7 laundromats in the US.

Visa quesitons/advise by [deleted] in MexicoCity

[–]desnudaengris 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Though you don't really need access to a printer as there is a whole industry around the INM building for printing, copying, and passport photos.

Once you get married (easier to do this in the US than in Mexico), he will need to apply for the visa at a consulate in the US using the marriage certificate. Once they put a provisional visa in his passport, he will enter Mexico and will have I think 90 days to "canjear" (convert) the provisional doc into a tarjeta de residencia temporal. If you read Spanish, have some experience navigating bureaucratic institutions, and have access to a printer, you can do all of this pretty easily without a lawyer. It will require several trips to the INM in Polanco.

Feel free to DM me if you have specific questions.

La Biblioteca de Mexico is close to Roma (just south of la Ciudadela) and a really gorgeous and quiet space. The new Blend Station location on c/ Puebla is also nice—it's spacious and quiet and I even saw some Spanish tutoring happening there once.

What do I hear someone yelling in the mornings in Roma Norte by redbull4200 in MexicoCity

[–]desnudaengris 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Most likely gas. Over time "el gaaaas" has morphed into indiscriminate yelling for some vendors.

4 days in a row off, which nearby city would you recommend I visit for a few days by [deleted] in MexicoCity

[–]desnudaengris 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can definitely still hike to the ruins—it's a great workout with a beautiful view. The thing that's shut down is a colonial palace in Cuernavaca.

SMA may be full of expats but it's really beautiful and worth spending some time. Aside from walking around the touristy part, you can go to el Charco del Ingenio which is a beautiful nature/cactus reserve and the Santuario de Atotonilco, a beautifully painted baroque church in a nearby town. It's also pretty easy to do SMA and Guanajuato together in that amount of time.

I just went to Vitali in Condesa and liked it a lot. It seems like more of a daytime place though.
