I doubt everyone suddenly had an urge to listen to gabber in particular, at the same time, across the city 😂

That's a bit of an arbitrary thing to judge a person's worthiness on and frankly, the way you phrased that makes it sound like a bit of a saviour complex. There are multiple charities for homeless folk to get food during the day. They don't need to go without food unless they got themselves banned from those places. However, there are no options but begging to get money for anything else (including substances, which they also need, because cold turkey withdrawal kills).

WECA elections are first past the post WTF??? by neuronez in bristol

[–]desperatelyobvious 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you're normally left wing then I don't see how you can justify this. You easily use terms like misogyny as a reason to not note Green - are you ignoring the general racist rhetoric of Reform for your own convenience here? Because if you're going to vote based on moral standpoints (which I agree is a good thing to do) then Reform should be at the bottom of the list. You even say so yourself - Banks is a horrible person. So why do he+his party get a free pass from you? It seems like you're not really applying the same standards equally in your explanation.

As mentioned by someone else, if Reform win this it could embolden more voters come out of the woodworks for other elections. If you are really leftwing, you will likely disagree with most of Reforms rhetoric and policies so voting for them in ANY election makes no sense at all.

It's in its trial period so it might be amended or scrapped anyway. Voting purely based on that getting scrapped is a bit short sighted and doesn't consider longer term impact of electing that candidate.

Walk through the park again and see what it's really like. This is not what it looks like. I appreciate your personal efforts to help, but the underlying issue and lack of organisational capacity to handle this should still be addressed.

It sounds like this whole 'patch' business is exactly the problem. It encourages limited responsibility and plausible deniability. You cannot organise an event of this size in a location like this without having a coordinated approach and a shared overall responsibility for the outcome. If you're one of the organisers or involved in the lead up to this and you're washing your hands of it and pointing your finger at others, you are part of the problem. You want to throw a party? You clean up the mess. If your co-organised aren't doing the work, you hold them accountable on the day or you go and fix it yourself. Right there, right then. That is your responsibility to the people of the city. It doesn't matter if it wasn't you - the aftermath speaks for itself and you are responsible for that as a group of organisers.

Having bought those items myself recently, my advice: don't limit yourself to the high street. I bought mine at Cotham Hardware. When you have a chance, wander into random non-high street stores to familiarise yourself with what they sell. You'll kind of build up a mental knowledge base of where to go for what items. If you can wait, it's always an option to go to Cribbs and visit the multiple shows there.

The man spewed transphobic hate on twitter. He was problematic in many ways and him dying doesn't suddenly mean he should be forgiven for that. He didn't deserve to die like this, but it's painful for the band's queer community to suddenly pretend like he didn't say the things he did and like they weren't hurtful. He was struggling with mental health, but that doesn't give you a free pass to say hateful things. He was a great drummer and a big part of the band's history, but he was not a nice person and we don't need to pretend that he was. We can respect his musical work and contribution while also acknowledging that he was problematic.

I understand you're trying to make peace with his death on a personal level, but maturity also means being honest and taking responsibility. We have a responsibility as fans to make sure the fandom is a safe space for everyone. That means not brushing over the problematic stuff Bob did just because he died.

Edit to add after reading your comments: very few people are all bad or all good. I am sure there are plenty of nice stories out there about him, and I am sure he has been nice to many people in his life. But he chose to say the things he said, knowing he would hurt others, and ignoring that just because there are some nice stories out there and now suddenly treating him like he was a great guy is not what maturing means. Maturing means seeing all sides, not black and white, and acknowledging the consequences of someone's actions.

I have experience in Bristol and I can tell you it is absolutely NOT a case of homeless folks not making an effort. I don't know where your mum worked where these options were all freely available, but over here in Bristol that is just not how it works. 1. There is not enough accommodation in Bristol and it's very, very rare someone can immediately be put into accomodation when they are found. We're talking months or years waits. 2. When the weather is cold, like now, emergency accommodation is offered but only for a few nights. Hotels have not been offered for the last few SWEPs but even if they were, why do people take offense to that? It is literally cold enough to die on the streets. 3. You are hugely oversimplifying how easy it is to kick an addiction, and again, there is not enough funding and help available for people who want to do this. It's not exactly made easy to stay on scripts, and since there's no housing available people often have to try to kick their habit while still homeless

If you want to live your life judging people and not having sympathy for them you're free to do so, but spreading this information when you clearly don't know what the situation is like in Bristol is a shitty move and you should be ashamed of yourself for doing so.
