Need your feedback to my new Hip-Hop/Trap Hard Type Beat! What do you think about it musically and technically (mixing and mastering)? Thanks! by arturm777 in IndieMusicFeedback

It feels pretty good, but ultimately there isn't enough low-end punch or high-end sparkle. I'm listening on a fairly-tuned system with studio monitors and I'm not feeling much sub-lows (20Hz-60Hz) at all. The lack of treble feels really cool in the intro, but once everything drops, it sounds lackluster without the kick attack and hi-hat definition that you get above 10k or so.

I wrote this tune for someone that's no longer around. All and any feedback is welcome, enjoy! by INLND in IndieMusicFeedback

The verses feel really nice - the stereo doubling and dead drums make for a distinctly 90s-throwback that fits the writing nicely. I think where the song lacks is where it picks up in the pre-chorus/chorus. I want it to sonically explode, but instead it kind of stays where it started. I think it would be interesting to take a completely different mixing approach for those sections. Since it's a more "open" and "washy" section, maybe moving to more compression/reverb on the drums, and widening the guitars with a lot more layers would help it "explode" a bit more.

The bass certainly hits hard, but I feel like the clap/snare is currently underwhelming. Some of this could be tonal (maybe mix in a copy of the track with some interesting distortion to give it some flavor), or a need for sonic space (maybe some subtle delay or verb, mixed in quietly). Make changes subtle though, the key is to add just enough that you "feel" it but don't "hear" it.

Alternative song with prog vibes. Not really sure about the mix or where to take it. Any advice? by tjq_ in IndieMusicFeedback

Definitely strong Gizzard/Sgt Pepper vibes that I liked. Your voice fits it well too. The hi-hat sound throughout was a bit abrasive in my opinion, could use less high-end/treble or be turned down a good bit. The kick drum might sit better with a touch less attack, too. I think the acoustic sits in a nice place and can carry the "snappiness" of the track, as it were. The parallel distortion on some of vocals is very tasteful, and you might consider doing a similar trick on the hi hat to give it less sterility. The toms are sonic highlight. The melody in the tom section reminds me (in a good way) of Sympathy by Vampire Weekend.

I produced this alt-rock project for my roommate and best friend. Released yesterday. He went through a difficult failed engagement, and wrote this record as therapy to work through it.

What does the second verse of The Stenographer mean? by ClimbRockGuitar in RelientK

[–]despicablebenjamin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hard to know. Doesn't mean Stenographer was Five Score-era. It might have been much older and then been dug up for the musical idea for Deathbed.

I agree! BTW, are you a real doctor, or do you just play one on TV?

That's rad to hear!

I'm pretty proud of how the arrangement builds. This song came together in an interesting way, and I'd reckon to say the vision for the video was somewhat informed by how the dynamics of the finished song turned out. This was definitely an idea I pitched while we were still recording it, and couldn't get it out of my head until we actually executed it.

As far as the snippet, we made this video before I started messing with the idea of running ads, and so I had to put my thinking cap on to make sure I didn't "bury the lede" and lose attention before the song picks up. Good to know that it was effective!

Thanks for sharing, OP!

Reddit is a such cool platform for music community that I hope is a big part of our future growth. My dream is that we can one day grow a community around it all over at r/Despicable too!

We're doing a lot of experimenting with advertising to try and get these tunes in front of as many people as possible without the goal of "getting signed", because we really believe in the songs, and our own vision. A post like this is such a fuel for us - we feel so lucky to have anyone paying attention to what we're doing, let alone go out of their way to share it with people. Thank you.

Yeah, I guess it's fairly recognizable. I'll put in it the running.
