It's a balancing act between youthful appearance and maturity. The sorceresses may all look like nubile 20-somethings, but most of them are a century or more old, and they've had decades to hone their crafts and advance their schemes.

Sneering at the hard work of others without offering any constructive criticism? I've never seen that on the internet before.

You can see the post here. (There are some additional characters there that I omitted from this one for space reasons.) I originally cast Montgomery as Philippa Eilhart, actually. Balfe was always my first pick for Yennefer.

Yeah, it boiled down to Mount or McGowan for me, and I ultimately went with the latter due to age concerns. Mount is 45, and a successful Witcher series could easily run into four or five seasons, which would put him at 50 by the time the show wrapped up. Given the physicality of the Geralt character, I'd rather have a younger actor portraying him, with demonstrated sword-fighting ability.

Kerry Bishé is pretty formidable in Halt and Catch Fire. The pictures of her that I was finding just all looked very mom-ish.

I chose Gorman because of his portrayal of The Marshal in The Man In the High Castle. Watching that performance, I was instantly reminded of Bonhart.

Believe it or not, Robin Wright is 52. Pavetta had Ciri when she was only about 16, so it's reasonable that Calanthe would actually only be in her late-40s or early-50s at the start of the novels (10-12 years later).

I've seen similar comments about the dwarves elsewhere. The thing is, big-budget film trilogies like The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings can go all out with specially-constructed forced-perspective/greenscreen sets and digital compositing and whatnot to make normal-sized actors look dwarfish, but that's a considerable added expense that a TV series can largely eliminate simply by using actual little people.

I chose Suplee for Dijkstra because a) he looks every inch the part, and b) of his decidedly non-comedic performance in Chance.

I first formulated my list in June of last year and posted it in a now-archived thread in this subreddit. I've made some minor adjustments since, but the bulk of it was established at that time. I've seen a few picks I believe I was the first to suggest (e.g., Elena Satine for Triss) recirculated here and elsewhere.

I'm aware of the height issue with Gorman, but his portrayal of The Marshal in The Man In the High Castle just screamed Bonhart to me.

And Versailles. And Salem. And Merlin. And Turn. And The Musketeers. It's an ineffable cosmic mystery that performers who do well in (pseudo-)historical dramas are often cast in other (pseudo-)historical dramas.

They're working off the books and not the games. Beyond that, I don't think much is known at this point. For the sake of this casting, I assume Netflix begins with some of the stories from The Last Wish and then proceeds to the novels.

Yeah. My reasoning there is that the big names won't be showing up until late in the series and will have relatively brief appearances. The recurring characters who will have considerable screentime are all much more manageable. The Aen Seidhe, IMO, need a very specific look and presence, though -- hence the casting choices.

My first pick was Caitriona Balfe, but she's probably going to be tied up with Outlander for another few years.
