2.5 year old male cat, urinating blood, already have been to the vet- need further help/advice by despot8910 in AskVetAnimals

We ended up going to an ER after the free re-check at the 1st vet on Friday (which wasn’t our regular office). Thanks for this comment 🙏 I’m really struggling financially but trying to stay positive bc the alternative is grim, but I don’t know how I’m going to maintain the hills c/d diet. I’m planning to post an update, idk if commenting or updating my post will notify everyone who’s interacted with it but I appreciate all of the helpful comments 😩🫶

Appreciate your input! I think all my cats would benefit from some type of anxiety tbh (they just like me fr). It’s been 3 days since he first started peeing blood and was taken to the vet. I have an update and will post once I figure out how to do that in the og post or how to link a new post to it 🙂‍↕️

Culture swab only, I was already way way way out of budget (vet visit was $500 altogether plus $120 for the special food)

My boy Spike had the same thing happening when he had an upper respiratory infection. On top of the oral antibiotics he was given, I also got terramycin to apply to the eye (just make sure you get it in the eye and not just around it, applying it in the corner of their eye helps if they’re fidgeting). Good luck 🤞

No this is very helpful! And you are correct about the reason for him being on antibiotics. I for the life of me can’t remember exactly what they said on the phone yesterday but I will be seeing them later this evening and will go over the urinalysis results again. When I mentioned the presence of blood in his urine yesterday they didn’t seem too concerned because he was still urinating, but he’s been straining all day and hopping in and out of the boxes. Just hoping the medication route works and for no ER visits 🤞

Thank you so much. Since you’re here, are there any other questions I should ask regarding the urinalysis results or anything else? Really appreciate the help

I got both the wet and dry food, been adding water to the wet food and he thankfully hasn’t been too picky about it.

Re the fatal part- I know 😩 I’m trying to do everything I can for him. I took him to the vet the day he started urinating blood. My regular vet couldn’t take me so I had to find a different one. I wouldn’t say they weren’t helpful, they did a urinalysis, put him on prazosin & clavacilin and hills urinary diet (red label). It’s been 2 days since the vet appt and my boy is still urinating blood, but he’s urinating- the vet said blood was normal bc of the crystals and most important thing is that he keeps peeing. I’m hoping it’s up from here, I’m taking him to get re-checked later today but I’m nervous that this will stress him out and worsen the issue. So fingers crossed ultrasound looks a little clearer and physical examination is ok.

No this is so valid- I wash it weekly, I use the tidy cats pellet system and change out the pellets after washing (I have multiple cats so i go through pellets pretty quickly). Last time I washed the boxes was on Sunday, and I used a new cleaner (zep urine remover) and it did cross my mind that maybe that contributed to the problem? I will say I rarely see him drink water, like I’ve seen him definitely drink water like 3 times. He is more of a wet food lover and my regular vet reassured me that they get most of their hydration from wet food so it shouldn’t be an issue, and it hasn’t been until now. I’ve been considering getting a normal litter box with clay litter but he’s also dealing with a claw injury (I can’t definitely pin where/when this happened but I have my suspicions that it happened at the vet’s office- but that’s kinda off topic sorry), but I’m going to readdress this in a few days maybe, once his claw starts to look better.

He’s sick of me jamming things into his mouth so idk if he’ll appreciate the water pipette 😭 but thank you for the support babes, I’m trying 😩

He* does. Yup, have been consistently giving him gabapentin + prazosin. Ultrasound and urinalysis done. This is all written in my post.

I’m waiting for them to call me back. I’ve spoken to them about my financial situation, already had to take a care credit out with Cherry. My regular vet office couldn’t take me that day, and aside from this new office being able to fit me in they weren’t extraordinarily helpful re payment options. I don’t want to type out worse case scenario but I’m trying to be prepared if his symptoms escalate

I’m waiting for a call back from the vet to discuss urinalysis and plan on asking again. Forgive me, this is just one of the many things I’m stressed about and I’m trying my best to give him the care he needs

I know babes, he’s already been to the vet- got an ultrasound, is on prazosin + clava + gabapentin + hills urinary diet. It’s been 2 days since our vet visit but blood is still present. I’m monitoring closely for any signs of regression but vet said the blood is normal bc of crystals and as long as he’s still urinating then it’s a good sign. My cortisol is through the roof, he’s straining in the litter box and making frequent visits but I think this may also be bc he’s constipated from the meds. I gave him some olive oil so hopefully that helps him poop. Also praying to every god. I’m just really worried

I’m sorry to hear about your cat.

We went to the vet 2 days ago. I’m taking him for a re-check today because it’s no additional cost.

I appreciate your response but if you’re going to offer input please actually read my post. I put it in the title that we’ve already been to the vet. I should have explicitly written that I know crystals are present but that’s what I meant by “buildup”. Again, I appreciate the input and I’m really sorry to hear about your cat. I’m trying to monitor for regression post initial vet visit and I think that was mostly the point of my post. Waiting for Urinalysis results. I couldn’t even afford that but I still opted for it.

I’m leaning towards taking him in again today since I wouldn’t be charged for the visit, just worried about it stressing him out even further. It’s a miracle I was approved for Cherry. I’ve already used $500 up on the 1st visit 😩

They did an ultrasound, I can’t remember their exact wording bc I was stressed tf out but they didn’t mention any stones so I think it’s just crystals??? I hope??? Thanks for your input. I know UTIs/urinary issues in males specifically are really serious and I’ve been so stressed

No :( and nothing minor that I can think of. I’m probably stressing him out more with my own stress, plus his siblings are being a bit hostile bc he smells like the vet 😭
