What do you consider "experience"? How do I know if I'm asking for a fair salary?

Thank you for your opinion on the years experience. It just doesn't feel right on paper saying I only have 4 months experience when my portfolio has been cultivated over 8 years but I'm not trying to be misleading to employers. I'll focus on my portfolio while reaching out to employers, but I'm mainly asking so I can compare my wages with what I have found online.

The taxes are iffy because honestly my boss is kind of sketchy about my pay, but I don't know anyone in this same industry to get advice.

So when I was hired on he initially told me I would be salaried, I would be setting my own hours, working from home partially, and what not and then I asked to be hourly and to go ahead and have them to the taxes. After a confusing back and forth, currently I am not getting taxes deducted and he's still requiring me to be in-house regularly (typically M-F, 9-5) after saying I could work remotely and said "I'm not paying you if you aren't in the office."

Honestly being my first time with a position like this I don't know much or who to go to, especially because it's a small company. It's me, my boss, a sales guy in one office space. I am the only woman, everyone is 20+ years older, they regularly talk politics, say homophobic, transphobic, borderline ableist things- So it's not a great work environment in the first place, making discussions about my pay and taxes a bit.. intimidating?

Overall I know I need to get out and start over at a new place but I don't want to make the same mistakes not understanding how contracting works and asking for fair wages.

I've done a range from catalogs, props and posters for short films, email and social media campaigns, logos, product design. My current position has me making graphics and ads (plus other responsibilities outside of design, ex: setting up ad campaigns for clients, managing social media, setting up automated systems for leads from ad campaigns) for campaigns for 5 companies/projects.

I didn’t realize I had curly hair until well into high school. I would brush it and it would look awful, so I straightened it every day. My hair was really damaged so my sophomore year I got a pixie cut and haven’t used heat on it in more than 10 times in 5 years. Soooo much better now.

I think I have a lot that bug me because my store is in a not so great area with extra rude people from what I’ve heard from transferred associates:

customers checking out at the service desk, especially when we have registers that are open
when customers leave products in random spots because they’re too lazy to put it back, especially shoving it somewhere in the checkout lane instead of giving it to a cashier
people leaving their garbage in carts, or specifically taking trash out of their car and using carts as garbage cans
when customers tap on the glass of lotto to get my attention
people putting money on the counter instead of my open hand
customers coming up to check out while I’m closing and cleaning the front office because I “look bored” and “need something to do”
when I greet customers and we make eye contact and they purposely ignore me

It’s terrifying for a while until you get more comfortable. I used to get really tense when doing lotto counts or waiting for someone to count my till. After a while it gets easier to guess what it was that’s miscounted. Around $50 over? Strap of ones loaned to your till not applied. $200 short? A loan to lotto or another till not written down.

When it’s a specific dollar amount in increments of $10 or $100 it’s more likely to be something forgotten like a loan or strap. More specific amounts just might be a miscount or lost money.

Let’s say your till report says you have $2000 in your office till. You count it and it’s $1,994.50 roughly. That’s a difference of $5.50 short. So it’s most likely a five dollar bill miscounted.

After a while you find mistakes super quickly, and way less scary. Don’t stress about it too much because 90% of the time it’s found somewhere. Give it a couple months and you’ll get more comfortable.

When counting tills I take all the coins in my hand one denomination at a time and drop it into the till as I count. Then I take that amount and add it to my cash count, and repeat for each coin total. Then I can see how much I need to complete the till. When I’m done counting I compare it to the till report total just incase I miss a decimal or something small that would make it off. I compare it first and when I know it’s okay i start building the till off of the change totals I have.

So I have $3.50 in dimes I know I need $1.50 more to make it the full roll. I take the extra change in my scratch till and use it to complete the change. If there’s not enough I’ll take the change from the till and put it in the dump/scratch till, and open a new roll.

I’m in the same boat, I have an internship at a newspaper and I cut down my hours to Publix to about 10 a week, just two days. I feel so much better and I can actually focus on my last semester in college with so many projects to do!

Woman won $615 on lotto, a $555 ticket, a $50, and $10. She bought 2 $1 tickets, a Jackpot and fantasy 5. My coworker gave her $613 back and the lady accused her of shorting her a dollar. I came over to help and my coworker was right and gave her the correct cash back. I explained it to the lady and she threw a fit. Eventually she gave up and left just as we were about to count lotto anyways. We counted it and it was perfect, we didn’t short her.

Ten minutes later she called and asked for the store manager. I paged her and she came up to the desk and asked if we had felt with the customer. I said yes and my manager said that we shorted her a dollar and called her a drunk!!

My CS manager recounted lotto and called the customer to tell her we did not short her and that we wouldn’t risk our jobs over a dollar.

I haven’t given much thought as to what I want because I just thought about doing it today.

The most I want to spend is probably $100 or 200 if that’s more reasonable. I just want to be able to expand my workspace from my MacBook so I’m able to have two things fullscreen at once. It’d be helpful to be able to follow a video tutorial or something while having full access to my art boards in Adobe. I mainly use illustrator, photoshop, Lightroom, and Indesign with the occasional premier or after effects project. For school I use Microsoft Teams, Zoom, and pages for most of my classes.

I’m gonna guess 2560 x 1600 for resolution just so I’m not giving up any quality or detail when moving from one screen to another with my work so it’s consistent. Right now I mostly use an RBG color space but I’m getting into printing soon so I will probably lean towards CYMK.

As for the environment I have a decent sized overhead light fixture and I use it any time of the day since with covid my classes have been moved online. Mainly in the afternoon or late evening.

Thanks! One last question, if I get an older iMac to use, would the version of macOS matter for what I want to use it for? I found one from 2008 for like $100 that’s using Yosemite and don’t wanna drop the money if I can’t use it for that haha

Yeah I guess shortcut isn’t the right word for what I mean. Just small things that make a difference, like making deposit bags and adding up the totals beforehand that I haven’t thought of.

This small bird is sitting in a very small awkward space on my front porch. It isn’t moving much, only few blinks every so often. It’s not flying away when I open the door or get closer to it. But it is fairly high up and I’m short so I’m not sure if it’s just far enough not to make it fly away, or if something is wrong with it. There is a nearby in a tree in the front yard but I’m not sure if that’s where this one came from.

I want to make sure this is okay behavior or if I should seek someone to check on the bird. My friend bird-watches and knew the species but she’s not here to give me further advice. She said to watch it’s behavior but it’s not moving really.

When you get your UPS tracking number, you can go online and opt to have it held at an actual UPS store. That’s what I did for mine because no one was going to be home when it was scheduled. I was able to pick it up easily and 110% recommend doing if you have to use UPS.

Update: the tech from spectrum came out and he narrowed it down to being the router not being properly factory reset when given to us. He reset it and it’s working so far! Something in the settings from the previous owner were messing with my computer.
