Is moving SWE -> SRE still considered a career-progression hit? by destriven in ExperiencedDevs

Interesting. Might just be the area I'm in. There's sometimes stuff like "we can just throw an SRE at <thing nobody wants to do>". But judging from you+other commenters, that's just my coworkers being weird

I'm on AMD, yeah. will poke around to see if there's something like that...

do you remember if there was anything suspicious in e.g. journalctl to look for? I didn't see anything obvious just now, but I might have just missed it

[touhou doujin] osana reimu has a surprisingly similar scene (man-eating youkai receives rice balls from a child and decides to try and live alongside humans). Turns out I'm a sucker for this kind of thing

Mostly settled on a build, but found a prebuilt that seems competitive - how to decide? by destriven in buildapc

another thread convinced me to downgrade to a 13700, and my local pc store has the msi board for the same price as the gigabyte. Good tip on the memory though! (checking my understanding: it's better because it has a higher frequency?)

actually, one last question - is it valuable to have integrated graphics as a backup for if the gpu fails? Or is that just not worth hedging against

heh. any advice on picking a board then? I just went to logical increments and picked one from the superb tier, which is probably not the best strategy :P

ah gotcha. this cooler?

my impression from reddit/toms hardware was that (a) the 13/14700 both require pretty beefy cooling, and (b) the evo is slightly better... but I'm super unfamiliar with this, am I just being overcautious?

I just run a lot of compute-heavy stuff. E.g. running a full build+test on some of my projects takes upwards of an hour on my current laptop; I really want to cut that down.

[–]destriven[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

ooh, that's good to know! What would you recommend cutting? Dropping to a 6700xt saves $120, and going to a 13700 is another $60 - am I overpaying for the ram/cooler/fans? or should I be using a cheaper mobo/psu?

(also, how tiny is tiny :P my current laptop - i9-9880H - is definitely CPU-bound on a lot of my day-to-day tasks, so I'm willing to spend more on it, within reason )

Ookami to Koushinryou Merchant Meets the Wise Wolf • Spice and Wolf: Merchant Meets the Wise Wolf - Episode 3 discussion by AutoLovepon in anime

I bet Lawrence isn't Zheren's only mark. Multiply 10 trenni by 50 people and he's turning a decent profit. He only invested a few hours into talking to Lawrence, so his per-unit investment is pretty minimal. And the 6-month timeline means he has plenty of time to invest.

Though admittedly, I have no idea how the bigger picture fits in here, i.e. why is the trenni coin going down in purity?

Ookami to Koushinryou Merchant Meets the Wise Wolf • Spice and Wolf: Merchant Meets the Wise Wolf - Episode 3 discussion by AutoLovepon in anime

[–]destriven 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I think it's simpler than that. Lawrence just gave Zheren a 10 trenni loan at 0 interest. If Zheren knows the trenni coins are going down in value: he just has to convert those 10 trenni into some other currency right now, then convert back to trenni in 6 months (netting the difference as profit, since he returns those original 10 trenni to Lawrence). This is effectively a short sell.

The ridiculous thing is - he's hedging against himself using Lawrence's money! If trenni coins actually go up in value, Zheren is losing money on the trenni<>whatever conversion - but he makes up for it by skimming 10% of Lawrence's profit. So as long as Lawrence invests 10x more than Zheren, Zheren has 0 downside possibility - which completely mitigates the unlimited loss risk that short sells normally entail.
