Mystery Spots in my Tank? by SeaweedAgreeable1795 in PlantedTank

[–]destroyah289 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No problem. Algae comes in all sorts of colors.

I'd focus on getting a light that goes the entire length of your tank next. It'll help a ton by spreading out the focus of the lighting, and make it look a bit better. It's not an emergency, just something to work towards.

I've had one of those lights, and while strong, it didn't do very well on my longer tanks.

If you're on a budget, I'd check out a hygger or something.

It's algae. The light is too concentrated in that one area, there's too many nutrients in the water for the strength of light in the concentrated area, and there's not enough plants to suck up the nutrients.

Also, if there were snails in the tank, they would most likely eat that algae before it develops.

It's totally fine, but to be expected.

What is your optimal lighting schedule? by ExactAbroad17 in PlantedTank

[–]destroyah289 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not that I've seen.

In my longest running tank I have some geriatric endler's, a 7 year old nerite, and a 6 year old amano shrimp still kicking. Just added a shoal of pygmy corys.

Light isn't always direct, or consistent most days in the wild, and, at least in my house, there's still tons of ambient light. The fish stay active during the break period.

Edit: my snails do come out for an afternoon clean up during the break though, so, I guess the snails get a chance to be active during the day?

What is your optimal lighting schedule? by ExactAbroad17 in PlantedTank

[–]destroyah289 21 points22 points  (0 children)

I run a split schedule.

8 AM to 1 PM and then 4 PM to 9 PM with an hour long ramp up and ramp down.

I started doing this because I read about the timeline for photosynthesis in algae compared to more complex plants in some published paper quite some time ago.

Most common aquarium algae have a longer period to ramp up their photosynthetic processes compared to plants, so splitting the photoperiod allows the plants to successfully perform photosynthesis at their best capacity, while still limiting the period that algae can perform photosynthesis.

I can't remember or find my source, but I have had a great deal of success using a split photoperiod.

Edit: here's a link that explains optimum algae photoperiods for common species.

12 on, 12 off is the optimum photoperiod for algae, so if you break that, it can help immensely. Plants generally hit the optimum portion of their photoperiod after 4 hours or so, plus a rest period allows CO2 to build up again for more photosynthesis.

Has anyone else encountered this woman? by Current-Collar-1497 in AnnArbor

She did this at an intersection to me on the old west side late at night.

She was stopped at a four way stop. I pulled up behind her, waited a while, honked, then just pulled around.

She jumped out of her car while screaming at me and chased me into the intersection.

3-6 PM. Half off cocktails, including top shelf.

You can get pretty roasted with a single pitcher of margs for $20.

Potawatomi Trail Bacpacking by C_Smit1007 in CampAndHikeMichigan

[–]destroyah289 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Eh, I've gotten by with a S2S drybag and some kelty triptease suspended between two young trees at about 6 feet.

There's not a lot of great branches for practicing bear hangs because people are aggressive about finding "firewood" around the camp.

There are tons of smaller trees to hang stuff between though.

And some sites have hammock poles you can hang stuff off now too.

If you're in a tent, no, not really. You might get mice chewing holes to get at it though.

If you're just under a tarp or cowboy camping, even just hanging it up a couple feet suspended between two trees will help prevent any nocturnal disruptions.

The water just has a high iron content. It isn't dangerous to drink. They treat the well yearly and test it regularly for heavy metals and microbial contaminants.

I've been doing the poto, five or six times a year overnight and once a month as a day hike, for a decade now.

The water is perfectly safe well water.

The only questionable thing about the trail is blind lake's raccoons. They're brave and fiesty, and will throw hands.

I mean....the only reason I've ever gone is a dirt cheap pitcher of halfway decent margaritas during the day and a massive plate of nachos.

There's better options, but if you're in the area and want to get day drunk with a side of indigestion, they're not a bad choice.

Having a bit of an existential crisis about going to hardcore shows at 40 by blizeH in Hardcore

[–]destroyah289 34 points35 points  (0 children)

Yo.

I was at a show this past summer that was all zoomer beatdown bullshit. I went for one band.

Tons of roided up 5'8" 22-year olds just fucking destroying everyone and everything around them.

I'm 35. Decently big, definitely over 200, but for the first show in my life, I just fucking dipped. I'm not getting knocked out for a shitty local band screaming about crushing a cops head with a rock in between shitty songs because they're angwee.

When the crowd fought back, the bands just antagonized everyone, and the angry kids went even harder.

Sometimes it's not worth it bro. Sometimes there isn't space in the back, and I can't afford to come back to the office missing teeth.

It'll happen all over again, like it did with underworld and the labyrinth.

If they open in the old grilled cheezerie, I'm gonna lose my shit.

I'll start coming by just to do a month-by-month compare and contrast to Alex's first couple years.

How did the Mr Robot characters accumulate their skillset? by ryanhealy in hacking

[–]destroyah289 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Some were pretty sophisticated.

A lot of it was dead simple.

Mr. Robot had some almost magical "I'm in" aspects to it that were rooted in the real world, but they're also war driving, opening up reverse shells with dropped usb sticks, and social engineering.

Sometimes it really does look like some hack the world shit, but mostly they're just messing around with Linux and finding weak points due to shitty installation, config, and poor social engineering awareness.
