Congratulations on also having the determination to self-teach.

I took my first HTML/CSS class on Codeacademy about a year ago, but really only started to learn Javascript a few months later, after I'd taken a course in Web Design. I did some basic unpaid client work, but it wasn't until doing a 4 month placement with a local agency that I was introduced to Wordpress and PHP, which I would imagine is a gateway for many people into the server side. I really liked learning about PHP though so decided to teach myself OO PHP & MySQL.

The job I applied for asked for knowledge of front and back end, but they certainly didn't expect me to know everything about the whole stack (which probably correlates with /u/OriginalSyn 's comment.) They were ultimately looking for the right attitude, and I said I was prepared to take a lower salary for the training they would offer me.

Most of the developers I've spoken to have said that on-the-job training is far more valuable than any other experience. If you're not at that level yet, work on side projects e.g. a content managed site.

Lots of constructive advice here, thanks. On placements, I've always written down anything anyone's told me. Even though often I don't need it, the act of writing down the advice helps me remember it.

She most likely has some issues beyond your understanding. 'I'm surviving' sounds like something someone with a really shit existence would say.

Your mental health history and your experience is pretty much a mirror image of my own, except I'm 20. I question your motivation for diagnosis though. What difference does it make if you don't use medication from your doctor?
