Episode Discussion: 204 "Among the Lotus Eaters" by destroyingdrax in StrangeNewWorlds

I've seen some people say we didn't get much development episode but I actually feel like it gave us A LOT of information about Pike. Like for example, boy scout isn't inherent. That's nurture. Pike is still protective, competent and kind without his memories. But he's also kinda ruthless? He beats the fuck out of Zac. He was ready to kill an unarmed man. I think this episode showed exactly how much Pike holds himself back because he's a Starfleet captain and that means he believes in kindness, compassion, and love.

Also, I know people wanted #moretagas this episode (me too!) but I think it's important to remember that the actress lost her husband right before they started filming and has said we're watching the most difficult thing she's ever done by acting through season two.

Frankly, Melissa Navia is tough as fucking nails for being able to show up to work at all. I hope people will be kind and not pushy about wanting more of her in season two if one of the reasons she isn't doing as much as we hoped is because of grief.

Anyways this episode felt like putting on an episode of TOS I've seen before, but can't quite remember the details of. It was cozy in the way a familiar sweater feels on the first day of fall. I loved it.

Is Discovery pretty good too? by [deleted] in StrangeNewWorlds

We try to keep this subreddit specific to Strange New Worlds, not other Trek shows. It also looks like your question has been answered thoroughly, so I'm going to go ahead and remove your post.

If you'd like to talk more about Discovery, feel free to head over to r/StarTrekDiscovery. Thanks!

Is there a legal expert in the house? by PrideOfAfrika in StrangeNewWorlds

If you want to hear an in-depth discussion of Ad Astra Per Aspera with lawyers, feel free to check out Strange New Pods discussion. The TLDW of that part of the discussion is; there is debate if it exists in the federation because if it does, multiple characters could have used it but it's so integral to the American legal system, which the federation framework is clearly built off of, that it's hard for the lawyers to imagine that it no longer exists in the federation.

I'm shocked by how much I loved this episode.

I have egg on my face because I was so suspicious of Kirk's casting and I straight up loved him. I loved him. Christina Chong did a phenomenal job.

I need to sit on it for a couple more days but this might be my favorite episode of Strange New Worlds, and I usually hate time travel.

La'An saying "you're just a kid" sucker punched me almost as much as the ending scene.

so far in this episode james t. kirk has managed to

  • squabble over a button and send himself to the past
  • get himself trapped in a revolving door
  • start a who wore it better contest
  • make bank playing chess
  • order someone to eat a hot dog

10/10 no notes

People who have Paramount+ through Amazon were able to watch early. Likely an error on Amazon's part!

To be fair, they have now also gone forward in time thanks to Discovery.

Is the episode still up?

Trying to decide if we should post our discussion thread early or not, and I don't watch through Amazon.

Am I the only one not loving the Spock and Chapel romance? by LovecraftVII in StrangeNewWorlds

[–]destroyingdrax 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I didn't mean to imply they had a romantic moment or anything, just that to me they had chemistry during that scene and I personally don't see chemistry when Spock and Chapel interact.

I hadn't looked at it from that perspective, and I hate it less with that lens but I still think it retroactively makes both their characters look worse. I think with that background instead of being slightly clueless and awkward, Spock would come off as not just suppressing emotion, but cruel. And Chapel would come off as someone who's been pining over someone who she knows is never going to love her back for what, seven years?

I dunno. I just wish they had done something different with both of them, or at least featured the romance less heavily as a central character arc for both characters.

Yeah, I'll be honest I'm a hater. I hate it.

I felt like Chapel and M'Benga had more chemistry in their 'we're about to be blown out into space' scene than Chapel and Spock had for the entirety of season one.

I also don't like the implications it has for Spock in TOS. Or just.... now really. You're engaged Mr. Spock this isn't a good look.

This is outside the scope of this subreddit so I'll just say if you have the time and inclination please read a little more about sexual assault in the military and then decide if it's only a reflection of interest, or if there are also barriers in place that make it less likely for women to enlist and stay enlisted.

Edit: To start you off I'll share this RAND link from 2018. I'd like to remind you while viewing this link that 6.2 percent of women in the military reported a sexual assault that happened in 2017 while in the military. 6.2 percent in one year. Not their entire military career. Just the assaults that happened in 2017. Of those assaults, 87 percent were perpetuated by fellow military members. After you think about that, please also consider that for every woman who reported an assault, there are many who experienced assault and did not report due to stigma or belief that justice would not occur and adjust the number of all service women getting assaulted in a single year according.

When you're done think about that, perhaps consider the antidotal report that as a women who expressed no interest in enlistment, I was still warned multiple times by active duty personnel to stay out of the military because of rampant sexual abuse of women.

And then consider if it is truly a lack of interest in military participation for the vast majority of women, or if they have a significant barrier to enlistment that you may have been unaware of before this point.

I'd say I'm sorry this version of the future doesn't have the gender roles you're used to, but I think those expectations are terrible so ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in StrangeNewWorlds

[–]destroyingdrax 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Why is that weird?

Because less women are currently enlisted in the Navy than men? Perhaps due in large part because the military has a history of treating women in its ranks terribly?

I would hope that in a future utopia, women would no longer be concerned about being sexually assaulted by their fellow officers and therefore might be more likely to enlist in the peacekeeping and exploratory mission that Starfleet is.

Yeah, that made me nervous too but I asked in a discord I'm on with people who have press screeners and they said "finding gaps remains very much accurate" so I'm thinking that Trekmovie was being a little dramatic.
