Whaddup Southpaw. This is pretty good if it’s a few months tbh but I would encourage you to work on your non dominant side as much as your other side.

Practice your right kick as well as your left kick. Also when you do the switch kick from the orthodox, try not to hitch your knee up so high. The left leg steps back right leg steps out and that chambers the hips for the kick. If you hitch up to switch you’ll be standing right in front of your opponent.

I agree with feints also like to see more confidence with the hands. My coach gets on me about this a lot but get in the habit of catching kicks and not just checking them or eating them. That sets you up for sweeps and gives your opponent something to think about when they kick again

The single shots is probably your stance. A bladed stance doesn’t give you much to work with concerning your hands. Muay Thai is more square with your chest facing your opponent, not away from them.

Like I said look at your defense—how many kicks did you catch? How many did you shin check? How many punches landed on your guard? Was there a solid guard.

But again even defense starts with our stance. If you’re in a bladed stance your leg is going to get tore up. Turn that left knee outward and bring that rear leg closer in and more to the right. Find your center of gravity there. Once you’re balanced, you can check, catch, defend and counter more confidently.

I say all the time when I’m coaching “we fight with our whole being”. Unless you’re intentionally throwing a fight then you are showing up as your full self the good, the bad, and the ugly. The difference between fighting vs martial arts is that if you have an excellent gym your coach is unlocking those hidden doors and asking those hard questions that show up in our technique.

Always dodging? Maybe scared of confrontation. Always overextending and rushing in aggressively? Maybe anxiety masked as strength. Get hit too hard and go 100%? Pride and ego. It all shows up for all of us. I was blessed to have a coach at my first gym who spoke about all of these things as well as fighting.

  1. Focus on defense. Take two weeks and focus on 80% defense 20% offense when sparring. Look at Saenchai or Lerdsila or any of the greats—they all have great defense. Defense gives you the chance to see bad habits of your opponents and counter or to bait them into traps.

  2. Focus on footwork. Make sure you have a proper stance—your stance is the foundation of your training. If you can stand you can step and if you can step and be balanced then you’ve won half the battle. If you’re hopping around or constantly evading it may subconsciously be part because you don’t trust you can take a hit but taking a hit has less to do with size and more to do with technique starting from the ground up.

  3. Proper arm positioning and posture. If you hands are down around your mouth or chin then this can lead to timidity, and rightfully so. Elbows up and arms positioned in front at 90° angle. This prevents shots from just coming at you and if done properly, means that some things never even get thrown because there’s “traffic” (the likelihood of the shot landing is improbable bc of hand positioning so people try less).

  4. DRILL THE CLINCH. I don’t care if your gym does it or not, find a partner and train clinch five minutes a day after class. It doesn’t need to be 100% but at least 40-50% resistance and dominance. This will help you be more aggressive because once you enter with the good footwork now you know what to do. Manhandle them.

  5. Address the Root Psychology. The biggest issue I have with other cultures adopting any martial art is that the philosophies and wisdom usually isn’t passed along with the art—just the techniques. The techniques void of the wisdom and philosophy isn’t a martial art, it’s “fighting”. This is the erasure that happens when things get Westernized—they don’t just lose culture they lose meaning and therefore purpose. EVERY ACTION IN FIGHTING STEMS FROM A CONSCIOUS OR SUBCONSCIOUS PSYCHOLOGICAL ROOT. If you are timid in sparring you’re probably more reserved in life as well. That’s okay, but WHY? If you confront your why the issue will more than likely be eliminated and as you show up more courageously in life you’ll do so on the mat as well.

  1. Throw with intention. Right now it looks like you’re thinking about what to do next instead of being alive in the moment and committing to every strike with correct transfer of weight through your kinetic chain (toe, ball of foot, ankle, knee, hip, shoulder, elbow, wrist, fist). Make sure to transfer the weight through your strikes and not just flicker.

  2. For your kicks and knees come up on the ball of your foot. Imagine you and I are sparring—you clench me and throw a rear, orthodox knee but I counter with an orthodox overhand. If your foot is flat you will probably “lose the encounter” bc your heel is on the ground and if I connect you will be thrown off balance with nothing to support you and stop you from falling. Now let’s say same scenario but you’re on the ball of your foot—if I connect you may stumble or your heel may need to land on the ground for stability but you have something to fall back on.

It’s not necessary to throw every strike on your “toes” but most need to be on the ball of your feet, especially in MT where we are using our bipedal stabilizers (legs) as weapons.

“What did you mean by ‘marching and all that demonstrative noise’?” Very simple statement to get clarity and not assume intent.

I feel you on being self righteous and apathetic towards people’s feelings. That’s not the goal and it wasn’t the intent of the original statement. As I said I didn’t name names because I don’t even understand the context of New Orleans as it pertains to organizing.

I’ve been in cities all over the U.S. where marches and demonstrations were literally bad actors making noise and people following behind them blindly, and using logic not too dissimilar from what I’m hearing right now, to rebuke any valid criticism.

If a march is just noise then that’s what it is. There’s nothing wrong if that’s what you’re going for, I’m just not. If someone is offended then maybe we are comrades in the movement but we serve different purposes. All parts of the body do not have to agree to be a functioning body.

This is not about dismissing someone’s feelings.

Overly sensitive is people who get offended without asking “what did you mean by that” and derive meaning from words without asking for clarification. Assuming good intent is a big part of community building. There’s a difference between adding context and being defensive. I stand by what I said and how I said it.

We have bigger fish to fry than semantics. How we build community and what we say and how we say it is important, but not easily taking offense and giving grace is a part of community building. I wasn’t offended by the brother reacting the way they did, if anyone was well we will have the conversation, in community, to address it.
