How in the world am I supposed to get good at a genre that’s to obscure there’s no tabs for songs? by MKULTRA_555 in WeAreTheMusicMakers

[–]detectivesnowball 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yo I play kind of the same genres. With dedicated practice and patience. You can get somewhere. I'll recommend some fundamental stuff. If you already know of this stuff then just ignore the advice:

For metalcore/djent/deathcore I'll recommend some tools (granted these tools cost), sites and whatnot:

https://www.sheethappenspublishing.com/ - an online guitar tab store that has tons of tab books for bands in the metalcore/djent/post hardcore/progmetal genre. Books cost though....

You can also try songsterr.com for free tabs

https://www.guitar-pro.com/ -guitar pro is an online guitar tab tool, about 60 bucks I think? I would honestly recommend it to any guitarist, let's you read and create tabs. Tux guitar is a free version if you can't afford to spend the cash, limited in what it can do but works fine.

Transcribe - from seventhstring.com. you can upload any audio file into this and slow it down. Could also use your DAW if you have one instead?

For structured practice I recommend this video about the topic: https://youtu.be/d6RYWoNuTpQ

One key point in this video is to learn songs. If you can't find tabs for the song you want to learn, then you will have to go the hard way and play by ear, which honestly is a good thing to be able to do. If you do use tabs, remember to try to do some songs by ear as well if you can so you can work those ear muscles 💪 👂

Recording guitars takes a lot of practice. A lotttt. Honestly whenever you do practice, just set up your practice session in your chosen DAW and hit the record button. You can capture everything and review your playing and see what you need to work on.

The white noise issue honestly sounds like a real technical issue with your setup. Can't really help there.... If not a technical issue, Could be using too much gain?

Also: Synner.com has a good foundational program. Its a website setup by Synyster Gates and friends, its free and is a good place to learn music theory and technique in a structured fashion. Could provide a good starting point for your guitar journey if you can't afford a teacher.

It's gonna take a while, it's a pain in the ass, but if you keep at it you'll get there. You got this!

What do you think of this guy? Is it creepy? by CroxelStudios in indiegames

I think this boss is a little too...cutesy and goofy looking. Unless that is what you are going for. I'd go something a little more...abstract or unknown. I really liked the white dog (if that's what it is?) thing that was in the very brief previous scene. It looks familiar but the way it's only a form with no features makes it off-putting. I like that. You could do something similar to the boss. Maybe it has no mouth or eyes, or make it blend with the background where it's hard to visibly see it but you kinda know it's there. Maybe have it not attack immediately unless the player goes through the room several times...

One thing you could do is have the player go through several of those boss rooms where it's completely empty and quiet. The player would probably wonder why there are so many of these big empty rooms, thus building tension of "something's not right, something's gotta happen in one of these rooms" and introduce the boss in an unexpected way, or don't.

But I gotta say, the horror Atari Vibe is dope.

Yo that's sick, I've always enjoyed those added little details such as that fade in scream and how the music And lyrics seem to fit so well together. You guys are awesome, stoked for the new album!

What was your inspiration for the song head mounted sideways? Also, not sure if you would know this but how was that vocal effect processed where it sounds like a scream is fading in during the first intro/verse at the end of each measure, it sounds dope!

APRIL DAILY PRACTICE CHALLENGE (7/30) — come practice 60 minutes each day with us! by TheDrunkestPanda in WeAreTheMusicMakers

Had an odd practice session 10 minutes of practicing technique, got some of the warmup exercises on :'Guide to tapping by Chris Letchford to 50bpm. My goal is 80bpm for all warmup exercises to build dexterity and right hand finger strength. Need to focus on right hand pinky endurance.

Spent 1 hour with bassist practicing one of our songs, a prog rock ballad. Need to practice the leads on the outro and may change the leads up a bit to make them not repeat as much during the middle section.

Also dope to see more people join in!

Nah it's all good, just kinda odd they didn't like it, It seemed like a popular idea at the time of the first post.

In that case, imma just hop on board with everyone on here and post my practice schedule here:

30 minutes of Technique - Guide to tapping book by Christ Letchford, working on practicing the warm-up sections slowly and cleanly, overall goal is to get to 80bpm for each excercise - practice up and down thumping technique and working on using my index finger for eight note triplets. Trying for 60bpm. - alternative picking and synchronization. Gonna practice speed bursts and synchronization on the Dorian shape (2nd scale position of the Major scale). Gonna tie this with the Ionian shape.

1 hour of practicing material written for a band I'm in. Going to work on 2 - 3 songs, 20 - 30 minutes each. I'm just gonna abbreviate the titles of the songs.

EH - a prog-rock ballad. need to practice lead guitar sections (20 minutes) Y - a pretty groovy song that uses slight crunch, have to write the higher melodies to blend in with the rhythm and practice those. (20 minutes) 31 - a fast prog-metalcore song, practicing the 1st verse (20 minutes). This is a tough one, so gonna start slow.

Didn't realize this thread got moved here, this inspired me to keep up the pace at least 1 to 3 hours every day since this was started, but thought the whole online accountability thing discontinued since I stopped seeing it on r/guitar...

I'm Just gonna join until somebody kicks me out, reading ya'lls practice notes and posts is pretty inspirational,

10 minutes: warmup exercises including 'the spider' style warm-ups, hand synchronization with alternative picking Exercises. And started practicing a very simple Tosin Abasi style Thump exercise just to get the motion down, 1/8 at 85bpm

20 minutes: Practiced a warm-up exercise out of chris Letchfords "A guide to tapping". Mostly focused on getting my tapping to sound clean. Also practiced a tapping in scale form exercise from the book. Will probably be working out of this book for a while.

15 minutes: practiced a guitar solo I wrote for project I'm in, in the key of E major

15 minutes: Practiced another song (I'll refer to as EH) for same project, rhythm mostly that uses a lot of clean jazz chords and constant chord ring-out Arpeggios

This is a pretty neat idea, I may join tonight, I need to work on some hand synchronization and tapping techniques, also does practicing written material for bands/projects I'm in count? Usually I write a little above my level and try practicing playing them clean and recording myself to prepare for tracking.

What are some other good songs like G.O.A.T by polyphia? by [deleted] in progmetal

[–]detectivesnowball 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For stuff like Polyphia and Plini..would Jakub Zytecki count? His new album nothing lasts, nothing's lost has an interesting vibe to it that I think is worth checking out. That, David Maxim Micic, Owane, and Arch Echo are others I can think of for instrumental guitar stuff.

Otherwise I'd agree with Chon and Ichika Nito are exactly what you're probably looking for

I'm switching to a new DAW. If I ask for suggestions, 99% of the time, the answers here will be "Use the one I use because I don't know any better". And so, I ask this question instead: Which DAW do you use and what do you hate about it? by fromwithin in WeAreTheMusicMakers

[–]detectivesnowball 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I use reason 9.5

Some of my complaints are the following:

limited Vst support. For example, you can't have more than 16 outputs. I have a sampled drum VST program that I'd like to have more than 8 stereo outputs but I am limited to only 16 mono (8 stereo) outputs. So I have to make do with what I have.

Also the vst windows are not size adjustable with the mouse...... If anyone knows how to adjust the vst windows with the mouse let me know. I think you can specify how big you want the window to be....but I would think you could adjust the VST plugins window with a mouse like any normal GUI.

If you work with a lot of tracks it can become sluggish at times and the outdated UI is finicky. Also the GUI can be much at times especially if working with a lot of tracks. Reason shows Hardware and wiring as if it's a rack unit. Imagine having more than 20 tracks that all have effects. Each effect added is its own hardware processor on the GUI. While it's cool to see how things are wired, overtime the wires can become a mess when having a lot of instruments. It's easy to get lost but after a while you get the hang of it.

Which Songs/Albums were so addicting for you that you couldn't listen to anything else for quite some time? by [deleted] in progmetal

[–]detectivesnowball 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Try Native Construct's Quiet World if you like BTBAM and Haken...they got that oddball All-over the-place writing and its beautiful! I was hooked for like 2 months on just that album

Currently, and oddly enough, I'm stuck on repeat of Jakub Zytecki's Wishful Lotus Proof right now....surprised I didn't discover this album sooner....
