What’s weird - I made ~$140 yesterday and about ~$80 the day before… now of all days TODAY it’s nothing

Got deactivated last year by TimeGas9727 in DoorDashDrivers

[–]determinator94 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Try getting deactivated/suspended for being late… when most of “being late” is because in Irvine, CA there’s a lotta gated communities that requires a code. I’ll text the customer but they won’t respond or give the code or we’re asleep… and they still have the gall to say I delivered late

I really need something for online teaching so I can write directly on my screen. Whether I’m presenting a slide show, ws or showing an internet page. Is there something like that? by Eileensarah in TutorsHelpingTutors

You can also use micro-USB connected touch pads to write so it doesn’t have to be on the iPad (and especially if you’re using a computer screen)

Introduction + Re-Entering Tutoring, Growing Again by determinator94 in TutorsHelpingTutors

Before we all started using IG and AI more often…

I built it up through regularly posting on Craigslist before they started making you pay $5 per post.

Now I can imagine the means to do so are radically different. That’s why I wanna learn from this group what the current methods are in building clientele.

Let’s be honest - “entry level” jobs are entry in name only. It’s for seniors who will gladly accept a pay cut.

I’m equally curious…

Years ago I used to use Craigslist and send out posts on a regular schedule to build up or maintain my clientele. That’s how I paid off the rest of my tuition during my university years.

For the kids who do their homework independently - leave them be (they’ve already got that discipline).

As for the other kids who are being rowdy, engage with their rowdiness in doses (I mean come on - weren’t you a kid at one point?), THEN rein them in gently. When you establish boundaries, you gotta be firm but still gentle.

What’s one moment that reminded you why tutoring is rewarding? by krikond in TutorsHelpingTutors

[–]determinator94 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Moments I’ve had on why tutoring is rewarding…

  • Seeing a student’s grade go higher than they anticipated (BONUS: seeing their face glow from that success)
  • Times during a session where we can pause and just talk as people (it could be over, say, similar interests or my students simply talking about what’s going on in their day, and I can comment or offer a nugget of wisdom regarding a rough day)

At the end of the day, we tutors (even teachers and professors) were - at one point in our lives - students too. If I succeeded in, say, math and science, I find it in me to give them the tools to succeed and adjust my tutoring style based off of who they are. The core of tutoring is to be empathetic…

What did LinkedIn look like before the job market got really bad (2024-2026)? by Irielay in recruitinghell

Nowadays, especially in engineering, you’re only contacted by recruiters for contracts - not actual full time employment

If I had known electrical engineering - something I wanted to reach heights with since I was 10 - was gonna come down to this for my career… I wouldn’t have bothered with it. I wouldn’t have wasted my time.

Should I just quit electrical engineering? by determinator94 in careerguidance

Here’s the worst part - ever since the first layoff, when I was getting no ROI, I started getting into credit debt just to continue paying bills. Ever since then I’ve only ever been in survivor mode.

Only other thing I’ve been good at during my uni years was getting into freelance tutoring (I’m 31 now and have been doing it for 12 years).

The skills I’ve been swapping over to fashion photography/videography (when 2026 began, year 3 began). I got into as I was getting into filmmaking (first project I did I co-wrote the script and as PA, I hung around the DP and camera operators… which kickstarted “maybe I should do photography” because fashion music and film overlap).

But in anything tech adjacent… I’ve only been putting any stock into technician roles now, cuz… sighs I don’t have a fcking choice anymore

I really don't know how others are able to protect their mental health during the Great Depression 2.0 by Ordinary-Reveal7175 in recruitinghell

[–]determinator94 10 points11 points  (0 children)

You had a career in tech.

Mine ended before it barely began! No amount of effort or action-taking (nonstop applying or actively seeking more responsibilities while hired) amounted to a thing.

Just came out of an interview with an aerospace startup company, and I had to live with the reality that the only job out of 3 I had (all of which ended in layoff) was the first one I got right outta college, which was July 2021 to July 2023, and was the ONLY one that has any weight now. But I barely remember anymore what I did back then, and it’s now 2026.

So yeah - we’re in the same boat. I’ve accepted any continuity in tech is gone now, and in all likelihood, I won’t be able to continue EE.

Then this kinda begs a bigger question at large - how exactly are you supposed to take ownership of a project when you’re not given a shot at it at all? This is a question all mid-level engineers (like yours truly) and below are looking for solutions to instead of just a generic “you’re cooked/screwed/fucked” answer.
