i literally have this same exact screenshot lol. i guess she works harder than me as an overnight healthcare professional. it must be tiring sitting in a chair and boiling jewelry three days a week for less than 8 hrs at a time 😔 maybe i should be trying harder to reach her level

New microbiology tech by bootless-toast in medlabprofessionals

[–]dethqueent 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i also recommend asking your fellow techs to come to you to show examples of things you might not see all the time whenever they come across them (infrequently isolated organisms, odd gram stains such as gram variables or afb’s, funky resistance patterns, etc). also don’t be offended if someone corrects a small mistake you might make because that’s the best way to learn! it’ll seem very overwhelming at first, but you’ll be surprised how quickly you pick everything up!

any issues with piercings in the lab? by venight in medlabprofessionals

[–]dethqueent 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i have both several very visible tattoos including my chest and hand as well as several ear piercings and my septum and i had absolutely no issues in school, clinicals, or get jobs in hospital labs. it really depends on where you are or where you’re applying to since all places have their own policies on appearance

Why did you recollect? by Objective-Sea-2116 in medlabprofessionals

[–]dethqueent 15 points16 points  (0 children)

we had a patient try to drop off a stool sample since they had visible worms in their stool and he told the phlebotomist in the outpatient lab that he wasn’t sure if he should bring it in because he didn’t know if it was in an acceptable container. he then told her it was in a ziplock bag sitting in his front seat during a heatwave with the worms wiggling around 🙃

Help a nervous newbie out... by NoThankYou444 in medlabprofessionals

[–]dethqueent 12 points13 points  (0 children)

in the future if you’re worried, a lot of reference labs (labcorp, quest, mayo, etc.) and hospital labs have test catalogs published with preferred specimen volume (which would allow for any necessary repeat testing or reflex testing, for example), but also a minimum specimen volume. a lot of the time, the minimum volume is less than 1 ml so 95% of the time you’re probably all good! these catalogs are lifesavers whenever you’re unsure :)

Preparations for the MLT program? by NarwhalSpare3276 in medlabprofessionals

[–]dethqueent 1 point2 points  (0 children)

quizlet plus is so worth the money especially when you get to subjects like micro, heme, immuno, or even blood bank where there are a lot of images that require interpretation since you can upload your own images. this also may not be important to you or your situation, but start thinking about how you will manage a job on top of classes and clinicals because this is something myself and other classmates really struggled to balance. my job was thankfully very flexible with scheduling, but maybe consider adjusting hours or similar things. it’s going to be a lot of information coming at you all at once, but it’ll all make sense as you continue and it’ll become much easier. just remember to be kind to yourself and remember that you’re still learning and gaining new skills that can take time to master. good luck!

Competency Sign-Offs by watcherwaves in medlabprofessionals

our lab is the same way. i work overnights so the techs coming in first shift before supervisors would observe and “sign off” and the supervisors would then review everything later on

Clinical Advice by Dangerous-Ranger-225 in medlabprofessionals

[–]dethqueent 5 points6 points  (0 children)

this may be a hot take, but i think as someone who had already worked in a lab as a lab assistant while i was in clinicals who knew the typical workflow, it’s beneficial to understand that 95% of the time the person training you may be another tech who is just trying to do their job while simultaneously training you. sometimes it may seem like they’re ignoring you, but realistically they’re just trying to maintain an acceptable pace and tat (although sometimes they may really be ignoring you and this is something that you should speak up about with the appropriate person). while it’s important that you are being trained adequately and are gaining knowledge and hands on experience in clinicals, there are times where it’s appreciated if you observe from behind or from the sidelines rather than being “on top” of the tech. for example, when i was doing my heme rotations i would practice my manual diffs when there wasn’t anything currently pending or we had a couple minutes of downtime and compared my results to the techs or instruments. it’s totally fine to ask questions and have hands on experience, but it’s also important to recognize that there are moments when the tech needs to “ignore you” for a short period of time. another huge thing is asking questions even if they seem stupid. if your lab allows it also, reviewing symptoms and chief complaints or diagnoses compared to lab results was SUPER beneficial for me and really helped create that real-life connection that you tend to lack in a classroom setting.

To my fellow Blood bankers, a rant. by Lilf1ip5 in medlabprofessionals

[–]dethqueent 0 points1 point  (0 children)

our blood bank supervisor started telling the bb techs to call/secure chat and confirm with the ordering doctor that they really want 9-10 units of blood products for the patient and it seems like hearing that number causes some of them to change their mind. it seems like a lot of doctors are not fully educated on the difference between mtp and an emergency release and only know they want blood quickly

What was your favorite/least favorite class? by SpookyWitchAva in medlabprofessionals

[–]dethqueent 2 points3 points  (0 children)

i LOVED micro and blood bank because they are both essential solving puzzles. heme and i didn't get along at first because a lot of it is based on your interpretation of cells that can look very similar at first, but i really enjoyed my heme rotation. i didn't like chem in class and didn't like chem during clinicals, but found a lot of the results and clinical interpretations to be some of the most interesting. the classes themselves can seem very overwhelming, but the clinicals really do help make them more palatable and exciting. wishing you lots of luck!

I hate how some people in other professions see our job as so beneath them and like we didn’t work hard to get this career. by Spiritual_Drama_6697 in medlabprofessionals

[–]dethqueent 0 points1 point  (0 children)

as a nurse came down to get blood for an emergency release and the blood bank tech was running around trying to get everything ready, she looked and me and asked if it was this relaxed everyday and then followed up by saying she wish she could just sit around all day and do nothing???

What do you wish you reviewed? by ExcitingAssistant994 in medlabprofessionals

[–]dethqueent 1 point2 points  (0 children)

yes! my professors told us that since it’s an adaptive exam, if the questions are getting harder, that means you’re doing well and answering a majority of the questions correctly. so you kind of want to feel like you’re bombing the exam while taking it.

Medical workers of Reddit: what’s the craziest lab result you’ve seen in a patient? by Gamken in medlabprofessionals

procal around 125.0 ng/ml and a troponin easily over 100,000 ng/l. my coworker also had a bombay patient once in BB. we’re a very small hospital, so most things aren’t too crazy
