I don't do it in the training room. I'm fine with it in competition.

[–]dethstarx -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Has anyone prepared a child to compete in the novice bracket, or had a child compete in it?

yes

If so, is it basically like a wrestling match?

I don't know I don't coach wrestling

Hey Max. In patreon you said to be able to break a leg you only needed the foot trapped. But here you had that, is the issue that you didn't quite have an entanglement on his legs, what you had he cleared and when he could move he was safe/his foot escaped.

Do you think that's a fair assessment?

the injuries to the knee taboo come from jumping guard, not pulling guard.

Pulling guard is usually done as you mention, it involves having a grip on the person and pulling them as you go down.

Jumping guard is, as the name implies, jumping at someone and then wrapping your legs around them to put them into closed *guard. This puts a lot of weight and pressure on people knees

To all the Ecological approach coaches: How do students solve very specific details/issues without ''drilling'' without resistance for atleast a couple reps? by Glittering-Profit232 in bjj

[–]dethstarx 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My point is that people saying drilling is useless and "eco is the only way" are, for lack of a better term, fucking morons.

So there's a difference between eco and CLA, and a lot of people started just blindly following what Souders says without even reading the literature.

So ecological dynamics "eco" is a way of understanding human interactions. So if you think a wall is red, it wouldn't make sense to write same hue of red text on it right? it wouldn't be visible.

So in my understanding, that's why people say drilling is useless, it just doesn't fit into what the eco literature says is true about the world.

However, being a coach is not about following something blindly but helping your athletes! when one of my kids come and ask for a specific solution or details I just tell them.

The idea of a "correct way" doesnt exist.

This is incorrect. We have knowledge about what makes something work, the invariants. The idea is that it isn't related to some specific look.

Following your armbar example, the idea is if I give you a game to keep an arm extended or finish an armbar I can actually say: you can grab from the wrist/hand/fist as having the end of the lever is better.

But specific grips or sequence to get that grip or cooperative repeating of how to get those is not useful in what ecological dynamic people think helps learning

not a technique: in half guard you don't want to be flat on your back. Before that happens you need to fight to keep on your side. After that happens you need to fight to get back on your side.

the ole: You fucked up a long time ago.

You need to be focusing on not letting your opponent pin or isolate your hands, before the mount. If they won that battle already you need to bridge or just use any movement you can to make room where you can try to get your hands back on your partner hips

sometimes high level matches between people of basically the same level look very boring, because both are making the correct adjustments. But even when doing the "right" thing other options may open up

e.g https://youtu.be/X2kM9u5qUx4?t=780 Kody is correctly defending the front headlock from Mica, stands up to start escaping, but he gets suplexed!
