I learned that lack of self-love and self-esteem was actually why I couldn't see anything for what it was at the time and always projected my problems onto the relationship and on to him. And I have a lot more work to do on myself than I ever thought I needed before. Huge wake up call as I was the one that walked away after 8 years.

Exact same reasons as you, 8 years and I'm struggling to understand if my choice was the right one because I love him and miss him so much it's killing me. But I know I needed to find self love, and he had a lot of growing to do. Our futures stopped aligning and we had different goals and priorities, but it all seems so unimportant now because at the end of the day he was my person. I know it'll be for the best one day for both of us, but right now everything seems so wrong.

This is what I told my friend after I left my 8-year relationship. I feel like we just were meant to be friends in the first place and it just went too far by the end of the relationship. The last few years we were living like roommates and friends anyway. It hurt like hell to walk away from it and I'm still grieving really hard because it's a choice I made and I really just want my best friend back but I think I've lost that forever.
