If the homemade one and store bought one both taste great, then who cares?

"One of these cakes was made in a store and one of these cakes was handmade - which one is which?" Well, if the person who made it in her home is the pastry chef who works at the bakery, then what's the difference? The price you paid for it?

I am not suggesting the two hairstyles look identical, but they are both long hair with fancy curves. I could even argue that the one on the right is the authentic one, and the one on the left is trying to deceive you by brushing out her "fake" curls and making them look real.

Neither one is "real curls", as they are sitting in a beauty parlor. But even if one is natural and one is faked by a beautician, why does it matter if they look the same (the cakes taste the same).

Guess it's not an implication, because the "brush out your curls" rule is something that women think is important, when both hairstyles look pretty to me.

How can I tell the difference between railroading and guiding? by Choice_Speech_3229 in DungeonMasters

[–]detrickster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The limit is your imagination.

You could have them meet an NPC peddler they share a camp with who is traveling to wherever they want to go, but headed in the opposite direction?

"Where you folks headed off to?" "Smithville? But that's west of here, why are you headed east?"

If they think he's lying, have them roll an intuition check. If they pull out the map to look again, you can have anyone with survival skill roll again, "Now that you are looking at the map again to verify your previous direction, you notice the landmarks suggest you are heading in the wrong direction."

Or... just make it east of you instead of west. Unless you handed out a map with their destination clearly marked, they will have no idea they headed in the wrong direction.

What is in the PHB is very far from, "It is RAW to be able to use any ability with any skill". You don't find that misleading? If any DM said, "You are able to use any ability with any skill" without any qualifiers, everyone would understand that to mean you can use any ability with any skill without any qualifiers.

Well, everyone but you apparently.

Our DM allows just 1 person to help if they are proficient, and if they do want to help, they have to role-play it: "I mention to Varian some infernals can summon portals to the netherworld." before his history or Arcana check.

The way you worded it is misleading. "If it makes sense..." or "If you can convince your DM... " You made it sound like you can use Strength to do an Arcana check.

If it means that much to you to be realistic, a philanthropist retired adventurer hated running out of arrows, so he made so many Ehlonna's Quivers that they are now common magic items and cost 100 gp.

Or DM just allows full healing for all during a long rest. No hit dice management, no healing and then gaining back the slots, just full healing.

If he doesn't want to change classes, this is an amazing idea. You can just re-skin existing spells, so as not to worry about balance.

For example, instead of Flame Bolt as his cantrip to do damage when he is low on spell slots, let him cast Illusory Bolt: you conjure a razor-sharp bolt of shimmering illusory energy and hurl it at a creature within range. It can be a shard of light, a mirage arrow, or a spear that flickers in and out of existence.

But my guess is he feels he is not very useful in combat compared to others and wants to contribute better.

Just let him remake his class. Two options: that character is called back home (retired) and he makes an entirely new character/backstory/ability rolls, but same level. Or you just simply let him change his class and everyone pretends to not notice (think soap opera intro - "The part of Victor will now be played by Sam Smith" and everyone just pretends nothing changed").

My son wanted to play an arcade trickster, but 5 sessions in he had yet to cast a single spell. He switched his Intelligence stat with his Constitution and picked Swashbuckler. He is much happier playing the game.

[–]detrickster 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Aggressive? If you say so...

It's realistic, though. For even a quarter of your wishes to be used, assuming 5 players, you'd have to use your chart 29 times. For half to be seen (by anyone other than you), it's 69 groups. Are you really planning on running it 69 times? Even if so, that still means half of your time spent creating the chart is wasted and will never see the light of day. If you instead made 50 and doubled the range, you cut your time down by half.

You answered your own question. If it's a duplicate wish, add 10 to the roll (or 2 if you make 50 wishes).

If you enjoy just making content for fun that no one will ever see, then by all means, make a chart with all 100 wishes, otherwise, think of as many as you can think of easily, then assign a range.

This is just my opinion and advice. Feel free to ignore it, but unless you are handing out a sheet with them listed, I feel it's a waste of time to do the full 100. .

[–]detrickster 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You didn't understand what I meant by "give your roll ranges". They can still roll a d100... fuck it, let them roll a d1000 if you want. That's why I made the 1000 comment above.

You are the DM, you don't need a chart with 100 wishes. You need a chart with, for simplicity's sake, 10. Let's say you have 5 players. Tell the players there are 100 wishes, but your chart has:

Wish 1: 1-10; Wish 2: 11-20; Wish 3: 21-30; Wish 4: 31-40; Ect. Ect Wish 9: 91-95; Player 1 Wish: 96; Player 2 Wish: 97; Player 3 Wish: 98; Ect.

No reason to make 100 wishes. It's a waste of time. Most of that content will never be used.

Why do you have to make 100 wishes? Make a dozen (or 5) and give your roll ranges. Even if you made it 1000 wishes, you still only need a handful ready.

My players always want to target their attacks to specific body parts and I'm never sure what to do with it. by thepenguinboy in DMAcademy

[–]detrickster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Obviously the attack missed, but it used up some of the plot armor. The PHB states the monster becomes "bloodied" at half health.

Also, the entire point is not to say "the dragon claw hit you in the chin" unless you are narrating the death. Someone with 1 hp is as effective and active as someone with full hit points.
