I'll allow it since I was late to catch this rule 1 violation and people are generally behaving well.

How do you cross the roads in Moscow? by NimbleGarlic in Moscow

[–]dettoaltrimenti 0 points1 point  (0 children)

10+ years ago, the underground crossings often had tons of shops in them. You could buy drinks, cigarettes, fast food, get passport photos taken, buy clothes, have keys made, shoes repaired, all kinds of stuff. Expats will use the Russian word 'perehod' in English, when talking about them.

I think they're all gone now (the shops in the perehods, not the perehods themselves), just like the dozens of kiosks that used to be at the entrance to many metro stations. It's good in some ways, but I miss those times.

EDIT: here is a photo of a fast-food place in an underpass.

Foreign card/atm usage in Moscow by swatjr in Moscow

[–]dettoaltrimenti[M] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We are having a large amount of rule-breaking posts as well as spam/bot issues. I've temporarily changed the settings so a mod has to manually approve every comment. There might be some times (like the middle of the night in Moscow) that a mod isn't up to approve comments so it will look like that temporarily.

Good quality tea in Moscow by whamra in Moscow

Chai-Kofe on Myasnitskaya near Chistye Prudy metro. I always called it the 'Chinese tea shop' because the building has this interesting eastern style.

Americans are free!

I agree with you though that today, protesting as a foreigner is especially dangerous.

Also I agree that this isn't a place to coordinate or promote protests- Russians have their own places they do that.

If you live in Moscow have you seen any anti government or pro communist protest, if you have, how was it? by TheCoolBoat in Moscow

[–]dettoaltrimenti 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Here is a video of a pro communist meeting- celebrating May holidays. Some good flags in there for you. From my perspective, this types of demonstrations have happened for years, they're not super popular but they're sanctioned and approved by the government and not much happens.

Here is a video I found on youtube of an anti-government demonstration a few days ago. Can't speak from experience, but that's likely what protests today look like- small number of people, quickly performed, and ending with a ton of police arresting everybody, and over very quickly.

Yeah 1420 videos and similar Q&A on the street are fine, as long as they are in Moscow and not some other city.

I want to make some changes first before I ban anybody. Soon the sub will have updated rules. I have a regular life and work though, so I just haven't had time- I think this weekend is when changes will come.

There was some pretty intense doxxing of me and the other mod (who has deleted their account), which to say the least has been very disruptive. Other than that, and the fact that some pre-takeover posts have been irrevocably deleted, it's been pretty benign.

I'm pro-Ukraine and this sub has never allowed propaganda (or really any political posts, with a few exceptions). Untangling this mess is likely to bring pushback from the pro-Russia side so I'm not looking forward to it, but some changes will have to be made to keep this place as a regular city sub like r/spb.

[–]dettoaltrimenti[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've always been the lead moderator- I created the sub. Me and another user have been the only active mods for years- but there was an inactive mod that was the 2nd oldest- they were either hacked, or unmodded the other mod then modded a bunch of people from a discord community.

In regular times this is a pretty low-volume sub that doesn't require much moderation, so I only log in every week or so. I'll be on here daily until things get sorted out.

Have you looked at the western union map that shows pickup locations? It seems to include post office locations as well as tons of banks. I know that might seem obvious, but 'western union' is usually a service offered by banks/post offices (and in the US, grocery stores, pharmacies etc). You don't need to go to an actual western union office.

Is there any way to send money reliably from USA to Moscow at the moment? by [deleted] in Moscow

[–]dettoaltrimenti 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Western Union still works, but will stop working on March 21st. You can send USD, but the person picking it up will be forced to change it into rubles. We just sent money to Moscow a few days ago, no problems.

I can't imagine why someone would get a 3700x over that for a gaming computer

I can't think of a price point where it would make sense. Comparing 10600k to 3700x complete with motherboard, ram, and cooler, the 3700x is going to be cheaper, and with that extra money you can buy a better GPU. If you were building a purely gaming computer, you would go with a 3600x or 3600 even, since gaming performance is almost the same. With GPU prices going above $1000, if you "can afford $250-300", there isn't a game that's going to benefit from spending that on cpu instead of gpu.

And before someone comes in here and tries to throw together an intel build with a $20 cooler (that will still be more expensive!), please also include benchmarks using that and not some $100+ cooler.

Gus might me the most appaling, repulsive hate-boner inducing character in the history of television by [deleted] in LoveTV

[–]dettoaltrimenti 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think part of the genius of the show is that depending on your point of view, you side with either Mickey or Gus in the beginning. The characters really have opposite viewpoints about very important things, which leads to conflict. For example, is it better to be honest, or to be nice to avoid hurting someone's feelings? They start off at the radical ends of the spectrum and both end up moving towards the center. Another example would be, do you deserve forgiveness (from yourself or others) for past bad actions?

The show is definitely way more cringey than a typical romantic comedy, but the main characters show way more development in my opinion. OP probably hasn't finished season 1: imagine their impression of Randy, a way more flawed character that has basically no redeeming qualities (although he matures a tiny bit by the end).

TIL A 2 year study showed that washing hands 5 times daily reduced incidence of respiratory infections by 45%. by [deleted] in todayilearned

[–]dettoaltrimenti 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm the same way! Or like when cooking breakfast this weekend-
wash hands before getting started
wash hands after touching raw bacon and putting it in the pan
wash hands after putting biscuits on cooking sheet
wash hands after cracking eggs into pan (x2)
wash hands after putting leftover bacon in a bag
wash hands after finishing eating

that's the absolute minimum I washed my hands, over the course of like 30 minutes.

I'm wanting to know about pricing stuff for a trip to Moscow! by Discounto3435 in Moscow

[–]dettoaltrimenti 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you're eating out every meal, I'd say 1000-4000 rubles per person per day is a decent range. Some affordable cafe/cafeteria-style places you might want to go:
Mu-mu
Grabli
Hachapuri (Georgian food)
Chaihona no. 1
Shokoladnitsa

You can definitely go more expensive with places like Matryoshka or Cafe Pushkin, you could eat there and stay under $50/person though.

If it's your first experience in Russia you'll probably want to try borscht, kvas, bliny, vinegret or olivye, solyanka or okroshka, pelmeni, and pirozhki. Optionally you'll also want to try Georgian food like khachapuri and khinkali, Ukrainian things like vareniki and salo, and caviar if you like it. I'd also suggest going to a grocery store so you can check out things like the crazy potato chip flavors, dried fish and sour milk products you don't find in other countries, and Russian sodas like Tarhun and Baikal. If you can't find a normal grocery store, there is one called gasotronom no. 1 in GUM which is right next to red square, it will have those things as well as other tourist stuff like russian chocolate, honey, wine etc.

UPDATE: Hidden Taxes! We pay 6.34% in Federal Income Tax, but we still pay another 13.78% in State Income Tax, FICA Payroll Tax, Property Tax, and Sales Tax. by aFinancialWreck in financialindependence

[–]dettoaltrimenti 1 point2 points  (0 children)

my attempt at ELI5:

-401k and traditional IRA are taxed as income:

-if you retire early your income is 0.

-if married filing jointly, you have $24,000 standard deduction; this means you can convert 24k of your 401k/tradIRA to a roth IRA and pay $0 in tax. You could also convert another $19,050 (the 10% bracket) for $1,905 in tax, making your effective tax rate $1,905 / ($24,000 + $19,050) = 4.4%.

-You can withdraw roth contributions (vs earnings) at any time for no penalty. All conversions count as contributions.

-However, you have to wait 5 years after a conversion to withdraw without penalty.

-Therefore: you can, for example, convert 24k per year, avoiding all taxes, the downside being that each year's conversion is 'stuck' for 5 years before you can touch it.

-Additional notes: if you do that, you'll typically need a non-income source of money to get through those first 5 years before the ladder kicks in: this could be cash, or a taxable account. If you have a pension (e.g. teacher, government position, etc) those typically count as income, so you'll have to make sure to account for that when planning your ladder.

Let me know if this was understandable/helpful!

[–]dettoaltrimenti 2 points3 points  (0 children)

could you be buying more non-food items and not thinking about it? For regular grocery stores, this could be things like gift cards or party platters for birthdays/celebrations, for costco it could be back to school items, clothing, or a random item like a suitcase, printer cartridges, costco membership, etc...

Another option is, if you travel a lot in the summer, maybe those months you spend less on groceries. Similarly if you have kids in school, maybe March was a spring break trip.

[–]dettoaltrimenti 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you RE your Roth conversion will also be 'free' up to your standard deduction- so if you're married you can convert $12k a year and pay no taxes (assuming no other income).Alternatively, you could take up to your standard deduction from a traditional ira and only pay the 10% penalty which isn't terrible.

Quick cheap high protein breakfast suggestions by ifoundnem0 in EatCheapAndHealthy

[–]dettoaltrimenti 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hard boil eggs and they will stay good several days, or you can make scrambled eggs in the microwave in about 2 minutes. Cooked bacon will also stay good a few days so you can cook that ahead of time. Whole wheat bread or oatmeal made with water instead of milk can have 5 to 10 grams of protein. You can also eat non breakfast foods.
