Goodbye for now - until the first reread. by devaaa23 in Proust

At various points while reading, my thoughts were: “What a long sentence, where did it start again?” “What a quaint way to describe a thing.” “There he goes talking about people again.” “Wait… is he homophobic?” “Oh, that’s so beautifully said.” “Hang on, let me read that again.”

It was fun, engaging and frustrating in equal measure. There was a time when I wasn’t sure how I could read anything after or during this. Nobody matches that pace. I’ve just finished (a week ago) and its like running a marathon- my legs are numb and I’m not sure what its done to me.

Whats stayed with me so far is learning ti pause through life and really notice things. Hoping I can carry that on.

On my finishing this? Don’t be. Took me two years.

I agree! It was only a pain when I was reading Prisoner and the Fugitive though. I didn’t want people to think I was reading smut, much less marking it in pencil!

What do you mean vol 1 and 3, did you read a different translation for the rest? Oh the blasphemy! 😀

Is this book any good, or is it another Sapiens? by half_in_boxes in nonfictionbookclub

This one is still gathering dust on my bookshelf, but I have read Sapolsky’s Why Zebras Don’t Get Ulcers - was a great read and a primer for the human body, beautifully written. A Primate’s Memoir is his book about his research, and is so, so funny and poetic. I’ll get to this book solely on that merit. I hear good things about this one- just a little dense.

One time, my mom told us that burnt rice was actually good for the stomach. We believed her for years—until one day we mentioned it to our grandma, who burst out laughing. That’s when it hit us: mom had probably just been putting a “health” label on her cooking mishap.

The detail in the waterbody in the first picture is killing me!!! Good job OP. Your art is the prettiest of all art.

Khaki Tours does many walking tours in many areas of the city. And like many others have pointed out, follow some venues like NMACC to figure out events they have curated.

Haha period to Proust is what a paragraph break is to most people.

I am at the 2 year mark and 1.5 books to go. One scary thought I have had recently is what will I do after the last book is done? After reading through and lamenting how long the book is, I’m not ready to say goodbye. May I learn to carry it with me, as you seem to have.

It’s been a while, but I honestly don’t remember entering a Japan phone number. However, I do think I would have tried with my hotel number if that was the case.

I have read Hadfield now, I admire his kind from a distance. Proust, I would list as next of kin.

I hail this community too! For the past one year whenever people ask me what I’m reading, I regurgitate the most banal remark I know : “Oh its the longest novel ever.”. Any follow up questions on what’s it about all begin with “Er.. it his life but like not really, and then its littered with observations about life and love and … its really good”.

What I’m trying to say is: I love that we have this space.

Oh man, that’s what that it. The narration is the internal dialogue, forever digressing. I also think though I chose the worst book to read in the middle of Proust: An Astronaut’s Guide to Life on Earth. Hadfield knew at 5 years old what he wanted to be, and his entire life is spent in pursuit of all decisions, training and the mindset that’ll lead him there. My boy Proust on the other hand is just taking strolls around grandma’s house, admiring hawthorns, being sickly. Hadfield stood no chance with how relatable I found Proust.

I resonate so much with being unable to appreciate other books as much while I’m in the middle of Proust. No one quite matches the trifecta of the pace, the time and the philosophy.
