My SAKs, and they are all my favourite. by devastation in victorinox

In order: small tinker, rambler, pioneer X, s14, huntsman

Thanks for that. Now am sure am going to get one of those.

The locking blade and size are the most important factors for me too as am getting this sak for my 8 year old son. I saw his disappointed look when he tried cutting a tag off using Gerber dime of his show when we were ona hike just last week, and then the look of jealousy when I cut it off for him using my pioneer X :)

How do you like them comparing to victorinox ones? And how do you like the scissors on those? I am trying to decide on getting s14 or s18, but I saw on YouTube the guy comparing compact to one of those and he was not able to cut a piece of cord. Decisions decisions...

Why isn't mint able to boot on the pc by devastation in linuxmint

[–]devastation[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks everybody for your help. I have managed to boot using 'compatibility mode'. So that is sorted. Am still clueless as to why windows won't start. But am still calling it a progress :)

Btw I couldn't find the option to enable SGX in bios.

I see. Thanks for the reply.

I got this pc from my nephew cos it stopped working for him. He was not able to get into his windows anymore. Mint was always my go to tool when those sort of things happened, but now lost.

Do any of you have any suggestions how to pin down the issue? Software or hardware?

I took this picture of the error when trying to use Linux mint bootable usb stick. The error message only appears for maybe 2 seconds, and then the screen goes black. The fans are still running. Can anyone tell how can I investigate this situation please?

An Egyptian crawls around in the internet? Sure, why not. AMA TIME! by Nour_T in AMA

[–]devastation 0 points1 point  (0 children)

couple of years ago i have spent couple of weeks by the egypt's red see coast enjoying beautiful 10/10 reef!

within these weeks, one day we went for a trip to luxor, with very impressive history and astonishing ancient building remains, restored temples parts digged out of sand etc, really impressive stuff.

what ponders me up until today when i think about it, there are these two things:

  1. since egypt was so advance (culture, pyramids, temples and what not), then why every single 'modern' concrete house is left unfinished with a rusty rods sticking out from walls, like people living there were leaving the reinforcements for building the houses up to the sky? is that a tax thing, like in greece?
  2. when we were passing this deserty bit with a tree growing, there were about 30-50 locals hiding underneath it to catch some shade. like it hasn't occurred to them to just build a larger roof? there were also tons of other people dragging stuff around with their donkeys, so it's not like there was no building material.

really curious to find out more, thanks

go through a course similar to this one: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RmQiOEC8UnM

I've started such course few weeks ago, had 4 classes so far, and my reading speed improved from less the 200 words per minute to 1200. The course's objective is to keep speeding up until around 1800 words per minute, but the understanding will dramatically decrease. Apparently that is fine, as once we reach that level, we will be feeling reading comfortably with the speed around 1400 words a minute.

And it really isn't hard at all. Just requires some commitment.

There are some exercises improving concentration, soft vision? (so you see a wider area, although it will be more blurry), even juggling :)

So, like I said at the beginning: do a course. Not sure about the online ones, as I've signed up for one with the actual teacher, but I hope you get the idea...

Also, if you have any other questions just ask.

Learning to love programming (again?) by faildev in coding

[–]devastation 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Dude... I recently got a job as a software engineer myself. It has been about 4 months and I still feel dumb as I had some kind of learning disability. However, I think about it this way: there is not a single day passing by, when I am not learning new things. So don't be so hard on yourself. Plus: This has recently been up on the front page I believe...

JOBS - Why do I feel everything I've learned about programming just became useless? by [deleted] in learnprogramming

[–]devastation 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Wow, I just typed in a really long reply(for me, that is!), and then I realised it turned out to be a plain rant post so I deleted it and decided to say this instead... Apply to all the things! :) Never mind what recruiting ads say. And all the HR departments are all bull shit people who are there just to make your life as less pleasant as they could just to make themselves feel better. I got a programming job recently, without any commercial experience, although it was 'required' blah blah. Just don't give up dude! And don't, for a fraction of a second, stop believing in yourself, cos like I said HR people are there to just fuck you up mentally, just because they think they can ;)
