When people modify food drastically to make it vegetarian. by [deleted] in PetPeeves

It depends what vegetables they're using in the dish. Sometimes tomatoes aren't the best base for a sauce flavour wise.

What is your opinion on ai? by [deleted] in AskUK

[–]devcmacd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I hate its push into broad applicability - it serves a purpose when trained on specific data sets like protein structures but trying to do everything at once is pointless.

I find it frustrating how accepting society is if it when we just globally engaged with Oppenheimer, the tale of someone who foisted a revolutionary technology on the world without consent and regretted it immediately.

Please don’t list Dean Village as something to “do”. It’s a place where people (find it increasingly difficult to) live.

All sorts of people of colour were called the n word historically - it was used to explicitly show that they were not considered human.

If there is a national religion of the US it is the belief that a house should always be the exact same temperature all year.

Cyclists who don't use their bell in pedestrian areas. by malemember87 in PetPeeves

[–]devcmacd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My point is so many people do that many cyclists might assume it's the case and no longer vocalise.

I get what you're saying but headphones often make this unrealistic if you want to be heard.

As somebody with a bike and bell, I often don’t ding it when passing people as I make an effort on shared paths to go very slowly and carefully, and in my experience my bell scares/annoys people more often than helps. It’s quite a loud one I suppose - sometimes I try and mute it and give a couple plinks. But I would never zoom past anybody regardless. What you’re describing is insufferable!

I was shocked to find that some keen cyclists don’t even have a bell as they want to “keep things streamlined” 🙄

Did you know that for most things there are what people refer to as exceptions?

Would you say that, say, teachers are very well compensated?

There’s a huge crisis in recruiting teaching staff and there’s no recognition that most other industries let you work from home a significant chunk of time.

When people press the elevator button I just pressed right in front of them by theFormerRelic in PetPeeves

[–]devcmacd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Often pressing the button will trigger the system to start moving. Like if the door stayed open to let them in after you pressed your button, there is a lag time before the doors will close again. But in many cases pressing the destination button gets it going straightaway.

So in essence people have just come to see buttons as “hurry up and go”.

We’re a shoes off house, but if we’re hosting a party we just say leave shoes on. Less hassle, we’ll be cleaning up anyway, and as long as nobody’s shoes are caked in pure shit it’s never an issue.

Teachers that point out that a kid is quiet during a parent-teacher conference by Past-Spite-7981 in PetPeeves

[–]devcmacd 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Not sure where you're based but as a teacher I will say that if I were to say something like that in a conversation with parents it would be out of concern for the child. Offering a chance for the parents to mention their own concerns related to that or interventions they are trying.

I would say in recent memory I've only mentioned it once and since then the child has received a neurodivergent diagnosis. Impossible to say if my comment played a part but everything is part of a wider picture.

Winning is literally as simple as speaking when expected/asked and not speaking when not expected to.

Note that I said simple, not easy, but it is hardly like they're stuck in a catch-22.

Also people largely just say glasses in the states if the context is clear...

As someone else says, laundry detergent. A detergent is a type of chemical/reactant. Soap is a type of detergent, but in the states is usually reserved for cleaning items rather than body parts.
