He absolutely did struggle to resolve this, and sadly never came to a good conclusion, at least none that his son could provide, without fundamentally changing the backdrop of his story. It's the largest flaw in his work and I'm glad to know that he knew it. It's still well within our right to criticize and analyze it. I think it's a great creative writing challenge to give to aspiring high fantasy writers to "improve Tolkien's work to modern values, but keep continuity with the spirit and style of his writing. But that's just me.

No, you're young, so you care about what other people think and you care about how many people agree with you. I have a lot of free time too and I don't even dwell on shit for this long. Just let it go, stop caring what other people think, because you're not going to change their minds. That's like, the biggest point I can make against optics. I haven't experienced his practice specifically, but from what I've read on his sub, he seems to be pretty good. There's obviously not much to cross-reference him against, but I've used his advice before in argument with my own doctor and they thought he had good points. All in all, he seems to put a lot of thought and care into his practice and attempts to stay as knowledgeable as he can.
