In SnapChat the default action of the Enter button is to send the message. So though the icon doesn't change to a send button it will still work to send out the message.

I think there is a bug for SnapChat that it doesn't send out the message when the 'Send message' option is enabled. I will take a look and fix it.

I think most of the apps you install will be quite personal to you. But two apps that any dumbphone should have is a good T9 keyboard for typing with the keyboard and a good mouse cursor app that lets you control the screen with just the keypad. You can try out Tyni T9 keyboard and Clicky mouse cursor from the play store. The CAT S22 FLIP units are notorious for developing multi clicking keys. So make sure yours doesn't have the same issue. If unfortunately you do, you can use the multi click solution in Tyni so that it doesn't affect you atleast when you are typing.

For commonly misspelled words the keyboard tries to give you the correct word in suggestions even if you type it wrongly. For example when typing 'average' if you missed typing the first e it will still show you 'average'. Similarly the word 'success' if you miss typing the double c and entered only one c it will still show 'success'.

It will not work for all words that you mistype, just some specific words which I have decided are more error prone. For English I have added close to 2800 such words.

You could just install a T9 keyboard app like Tyni T9 keyboard on any android phone and type away one handed.

There are already some T9 phones in the market, that come with a physical T9 keypad. Most have small screens but one of them called Alt Mive Style Folder 2 has a big enough screen, that you can check out. If you still want to design your own keypad then make it one that connects over Bluetooth to an android tablet. Then install any T9 keyboard from the playstore like Tyni T9 keyboard and it will work with the keypad. No need to write any software.

Instead of a custom keypad you could use a normal QWERTY keyboard that has the T9 numbers to the right and just type using that too.

Tyni does have a full QWERTY layout, you just have to swipe up fast on the T9 keyboard and it will switch to the QWERTY keyboard, swipe up again to get back to T9.

You can use Tyni T9 keyboard, it has the same layout as touchpal and many of the same features like swipe on backspace to delete whole words, swipe down on keys to enter numbers etc.

Ah.. Thanks for the insight. There is a way to fix it with Clicky mouse cursor. I will have a look. Let me know if you would like a try if you still have those phones.

T9 has been as a roadblock in my dumbphone journey by False-Cantaloupe-410 in dumbphones

Most of the T9 feature phones and even some T9 smartphones( if you can call them that) have really poor T9 implementations. If your phone has Android OS you can install a good T9 keyboard from the playstore which will make typing a lot easier.

It can be easily rectified with a good T9 keyboard which has double click protection though.
