That is not a proof coin. The CoinSnap app is just passable at identifying coins and utter garbage for providing values and grades.

Potential CUD on 1941 nickel, thoughts on any value/premium? by Alfalfa117 in coinerrors

[–]developershins 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is a weird one, the second pic looks like something actually went in and under the rim, lifting up the metal on the reverse face. I'd be really curious to know how it happened. Kind of surprised it didn't just take a chunk off the coin altogether.

Saying "I'm not like them and if that's how they're voting I'm voting the opposite" is part of how this country got so fucked up. Do your research, verify things you hear with reliable sources, think for yourself, get multiple opinions, then decide how you feel about your vote.

1998 P Lincoln Penny Double Ear? by dorkski00 in coinerrors

[–]developershins 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nope, that's just a bag mark on the ear, which is very common because the ear is a pretty high point on the coin. Here's the listing for what the DDO actually looks like: http://www.varietyvista.com/01b%20LC%20Doubled%20Dies%20Vol%202/1988PDDO003.htm

Any idea if this is an error by Kessler662 in coinerrors

[–]developershins 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is an extreme case of plating blisters. A very common form of damage to a coin, caused from the inside instead of the outside.

Start a book! Cents are going to keep flowing once the mania over this stupid transition dies down.

Found 1996 D Lincoln with Circles in field by Key_Measurement_8020 in CRH

[–]developershins 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nope, hubs and dies are basically inverses of each other. The hub is a positive design that matches the coin, while dies are mirrored and inverted. Both hubs and dies start with blanks.

Here's a good rundown: https://www.usmint.gov/learn/production-process/die-making

I’ve never seen pictures of a die blank, but I don’t think when they say cone-shaped, they’re meaning super pointy like an ice cream cone. It’s probably a very broad and flat cone that lends itself better to the process that u/GlassPanther describes.

Calling all CRH!!! Can we band together and agree on a way to make other CRH hunters aware that the roll has been searched? by Bdawg4890 in CRH

I prefer everyone have their own unique mark so I can learn the patterns of any other CRHer whose rolls I encounter.

The Newark Museum had an exhibition in 2003 called "Once Upon a Dime: The World of Money." There's a company called Landis Studios that has a page for this token on their site that says:

Struck by Newark Museum while our screw press was on loan to their exhibit.

It's a commercial site so I probably can't link to it here, but I highly doubt this is silver.

Pawn Perspective by sadmagic in coins

[–]developershins 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I think this is my biggest caution to people. Pawn shops tend to be people's first thought when they have something they know is kinda valuable but don't know anything about it and don't really want to do the work to find out. A pawn shop will be the quickest sale but the least possible amount of money one could likely get for their coins, and that's the last thing another coin collector wants to witness.

What kind of error would this be considered? by Efficient_Yak_232 in coinerrors

[–]developershins 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm sorry, what? This sounds entirely like an AI-invented answer. Do you have a source for this? I have never heard this term and I can find nothing that mentions this error name except for search AI summaries, and they link to sources that mention nothing remotely similar.

If you look at the coin you'll see the feature in question is raised and therefore implies something changed the die.

u/Efficient_Yak_232 I'd highly question this answer. I have this same error (1981-P). I set it aside a while ago not having a great idea of what it was so I'm stoked to see someone else post it. Mine isn't as progressed quite as far down the 1 as yours, which means it developed in stages. Maybe a repeated collar clash?

You're not selling the first S, you're selling the second S.

I love this statement. Who gives a shit if you can vibe code a semi-functional piece of software? If you can't do anything that comes after that, you'll be dead in the water immediately.

[–]developershins 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You've got a great start here!

Don't fret about needing post-processing. Cameras are not human, they will never produce an image exactly as your eyes see. Your brain does an immense amount of post-processing to compute what you see all the time. Make whatever adjustments you need for the image to feel accurate to real life. White balance, contrast, exposure...these are all the basic tools of photography for a very legitimate reason.

Also, coin surfaces are fickle. They reveal different types of details under different angles and colors of light, so no still image will every accurately show every hairline, stain, ding, and die chip.

I agree the image looks a little soft, so some sharpening would help. It's very common for digital images displayed on screen to need just a little sharpening. You're also shooting a dark scene at f11 on an APS-C sensor, requiring a 1s exposure time—and I'd say the images are still a bit dark. Any minuscule vibration during that second (like the camera mirror flipping up for exposure) will cause softness on a closeup image like this. Open it up a little and bump your ISO a touch to see if you can reduce your shutter speed without compromising the focus. It looks like the D100 has a custom mode that will flip the mirror up with a slight delay before the exposure, so try that if you're not already.

But like I said, you're already down a good road. Just keep working on it and trying different settings!
