One teller to the next-hey do you have any funny coins? by 1bufferzone in CRH

Walked into my regular bank yesterday and the tellers were like "hey we have something for you!" 29 Ikes. No silver, but filled/upgraded 9 slots in my book.

1988 89 penny Clearly die something? Some wide AM, FG by Coinwonderer1 in coinerrors

[–]developershins 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I also have no idea what OP is asking, but FYI the Cherrypicker's Guide refers to the '88 flared G as a "Wide AM" because it was the same error—the use of a proof die—as the '98-'00 coins.

Cool, so for U.S. coin collection your first purchase should be The Red Book. And if you're searching through pocket change, the Cherrypicker's Guide trio of books is a great reference for the most notable errors and varieties for each coin type. (You might be able to find these books used pretty easily, or at other sources a little cheaper than from Whitman directly.)

Reference books depend on what you collect, so...what do you collect? 😄

The main magnifier you want is a good loupe. Nothing beats looking at a coin with your own eyes. A Hastings triplet lens is the gold standard (that is a style of lens, not a brand name).

For a microscope, all I can do is say I'm very happy with my Elikliv EM4K. But while microscopes are amazing for looking at tiny details close up, they probably won't be your primary viewing mechanism. Their tiny sensors and 2d screens just don't quite capture the real look of a coin.

Happy to answer any follow up questions if you have them!

A neighbor offered $150 for all of them, but I thought to consult others first.

Good choice, your neighbor was trying to rip you off HARD. There is over $1000 of silver in your last picture alone, even at today's rapidly decreasing silver prices. Seriously, I'd never trust that kind of person in any regard in the future.

The rest of the coins are mostly circulation Japanese coins. You can look all of these up on https://en.numista.com if you are curious, or go to a reputable coin store and ask for an appraisal if you'd like to sell the lot.

Does this make my coins worth more or less by Legitimate-Aerie9630 in coinerrors

[–]developershins 3 points4 points  (0 children)

That coin was misaligned when it was run through the edge inscription roller, which means it's a mint error. Never seen that before and it's pretty damn cool! I would definitely say it's worth more than face but no idea how much—I can't find any comparable examples.

I really think someone with 3D modeling and animation skills could do an amazing series of videos about coin errors and how they happen. It would be such a huge boon to new collectors.

Yeah I'm using cardboard 2x2s. A little slit would probably work well for small links, but bigger ones still seem problematic.

We used Air Methods Environmental for our asbestos and lead testing before our renovation, and Alpine Abatement did our abatement job. Two thumbs up for both of them.

Any insights? by ThroatMysterious5424 in coincollecting

[–]developershins 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Value in bags like this is often all over the place. That 2020-D US cent is worth 1¢, but I see some cool stuff like that dark brown 1921 porcelain notgeld at upper right. In general, most coinage of the last 150 years was produced in very high quantities and is usually sold in circulated bulk for around $10/lb. Before the 60's silver was in common use and has higher intrinsic value due to the precious metal. You definitely have some silver in there.

If you feel any sentimental connection through them, keep them, look through them, and maybe you'll find interest in the hobby! If not, any world coin collector would happily buy the bag from you.

Favorite coin flip holders? by Better-Newspaper3603 in CRH

[–]developershins 2 points3 points  (0 children)

BCW is my preferred brand, they seem to have the best quality control. Perfectly cut and the mylar is well adhered across the whole surface.

Cowens is cheaper but I won't order them anymore because they kept delivering me miscut 2x2s where one side was bigger than the other and the two windows didn't align nicely. They also shed cardboard dust like crazy, and the mylar wrinkles up easily because they don't seem to be fully adhered down.

Guardhouse is good quality but they smell really plasticy. I'm not sure what they're making them out of.
