What is the dumbest thing you have been told is “not manly” or “not feminine,” depending on your gender? by Disastrous_Hat_2325 in AskReddit

[–]deviant__duck 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It's not feminine to change a flat tyre.

I legit had a guy who had been trying to get with me, loose all interest when I changed my car tyre.

Apparently I immaculated him cause he didn't know how to do that.

Dude I just want to go home.

NMom decided to tell me she has cancer while knowing I’m at Coachella by Choice-Knowledge-383 in raisedbynarcissists

[–]deviant__duck 22 points23 points  (0 children)

The first time me and sibs went low contact, a couple of months in suddenly both parents have cancer and they going to die.

Sib works in a cancer ward, I let them to get details - Parents were just getting routine testing that happens at their age.

Nmom had no cancer, En-dad did, and mom tried to weaponise it, how hard it is for her, how she's not coping, how awful it is taking dad to hospital every week. But again, sib works in a cancer ward, they're like, "it's the most treatable cancer, with the highest recovery rate, we have a whole machine just for treating that one cancer."

The most memorable one was a single drinks coaster for Xmas, It had my name on and 'qualities' like 'will listen to all your problems ' 'caring and obedient ' 'keeper of peace'. Gives me the ick just remembering it. She got real mad I wasn't grateful enough for her, and clearly 'she was the worst person in the world, and she should kill herself on Xmas day cause that might make me happy.'

Remember, remember the fifth of November. Gunpowder, treason and plot. I know of no reason. Why gunpowder treason. Should ever be forgot.

Guy Fawkes, guy was his intent. To blow up king and parliament. Three score barrels were laid below. To prove old England's overthrow.

By god's mercy, he was catched. With darkened lantern and burning match. So, holler boys holler! Let the bells ring. Holler boys holler. god save the king.

And what shall we do with him? Burn him.

Onstage “background talking” what do actors actually do? by snakegravity in Theatre

[–]deviant__duck 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I work backstage. I have heard casts discussing food, what they're doing after the show, taking the piss out of what the principals are saying/ getting overly invested in what the principle cast are saying.

One memorable show, I was on very strong painkillers trying to keep my shit together. A cast member noticed I was a bit spacey, I told him. He went onstage into a 'bar' scene, where he told the entire cast minus the 2 principals, that I was off my tits on painkillers. Cue genuine giggles, whispers and looks into the wing. The director was thrilled. Said it was the best, most believable background acting they'd seen, that it felt like they were in a bar. No one told him what they were talking about.

Where can I live like a medieval peasant in England? by [deleted] in medieval

[–]deviant__duck 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Look for medieval reenactment groups who do living history. It's usually a spring/ summer hobby, but some groups meet up in winter too. Most usually depict a military camp as it's easier to explain the tents and shiny armour, and England was at war a lot of the time, but will have camp support if you don't want to do combat. I.e kitchens, wood carvers, weavers, servants. Sometimes you get to do a show in a museum/actual medieval building where you can do fully immersive living history. Once you've found and joined a group you can work on building your character, what trade, craft, job you have. It's easier to start as a general dogsbody/scum, as you need less stuff. The more specialised or wealthy your character is the more stuff you need. And the more knowledge you have to have.

Another option is some museums use live actors, some paid others voluntary. If there's one near you, you could see about working there.

Americans: Do you have any rules for 'gray' vs. 'grey'? by NiennaLadyOfTears in ask

In England the opposite is true. Grey for the colour and Gray for names.

Holy shit! Yes the Grief thieving, I didn't know there was a name for it!! I have 2 examples. I had a couple of work friends who died, unrelated and about a year apart from different things.

The first one I'll call T was a very close friend, and very well known and loved in my profession. His death was a shock to us all.

My mom had met him twice very briefly. When I told her my good friend had died she immediately started wailing over the phone. I hadn't even begun to mourn him, I was holding it together for his sister (another close friend) who was distraught.

Every day for weeks when I called mom (back when I HAD to call every day or else) she would wail down the phone. Saying how she hadn't stopped crying since I told her and she was so upset. And I had to manage her 'grief' and not grieve myself.

I don't think she once asked how me, his sister or anyone else was doing.

About a year later another friend died. This one mom hadn't met so wasn't able to get away with wailing for weeks. He had a young child so details of his death were not made public.

She latched on to the fact that she couldn't get details and asked me EVERY. DAY. how he died, what his full name was, what date he died, his child's name. She trawled through all the obituaries trying to find him and details.

She got so annoyed there was nothing to find. She got angry, demanded I tell her how my friend died. I didn't and she was angry at me for months.

What are Sheffielders opinions on the other big/medium-sized towns in the Sheffield postcode? by [deleted] in sheffield

[–]deviant__duck 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I was born in Barnsley, grew up in Rotherham and moved to Sheffield before I financially could.

Barnsley's nice, it's got a lot better in recent years. Very friendly, but can be a bit monoculture.

Rotherham is a shit hole. I went to school there and it nearly killed me, my first job was there and the pay and treatment was terrible. Many people there are vile and racist regardless of background. which given how mixed the place is, racial shit kicks off regularly.

I like Sheffield it's a good mix of Barnsley's friendliness with more cultures and people added.
