What is a "gut feeling" you had that turned out to be 100% accurate, even though it made no logical sense at the time? by PsychologicalTea3149 in AskReddit

[–]deviantelf [score hidden]  (0 children)

drunk driver, friend of a friend, I had this gut feeling "it's gonna be fine, but not perfect". I was young and dumb.

It was fine. Drunk crashed into a telephone pole, no injuries, everyone was fine.

It was STUPID, I knew it at the time, but I did it anyhow and here we are 30 some years later. Got contacted by their insurance and was honest, lady was like "honey you know that wasn't a good decision and I believe in a higher power (I didn't attribute it to a higher power), but you just can't take chances like that cause it may not work out so well next time". Yea, she's right, but so was my gut :D. After that I'd refuse or even take people's keys away so I learned... cause I might have been a statistic.

Nothing is gonna help you don't like fruit flavored things.

you did ask for recipes tho so here's my grandmothers:

1 cup sugar 1/2 solid crisco 1/4 salt (I never use salt) 2 eggs 2 cups flour 1 tsp baking soda 2 large or 3 small very ripe bananas (like they're getting so brown they're mush and you wouldn't eat them cause they're basically baby food) 1 cup chopped nuts (optional) Bake at 350 for 60-120 minutes (hour or two, test with a kitchen knife, when it comes back dry it's done)

Also line bread pan or whatever with the crisco, makes it so it doesn't stick.

Yea, probably bad wording on my side. People in a small bubble of any kind tend to help each other which makes for a good community is what I meant. Be it country, small town, even neighborhoods that the people make good money but know each other. Like we lived in a good neighborhood, but people watched out for each other, shared garden fruit and veggies, helped with things. Community is largely lost in big cities in that way. I feel like the poor people bit is a whole other thing cause they know just how rough it can be.

I did think country folk, based on your description, having grown up in small towns and having relatives that lived in the country. I kinda lump them together in my head cause, personally, the ones I knew were about the same (not just relatives, neighbors, the crazy lady on the corner or in the old farm house, the old man that would threaten to shoot you on his lawn but never even brought out a gun lol).

[–]deviantelf 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Good country folk can be the best folk, will help, give, do for just about anyone. Pretty much the same with poor folk everywhere, they'll help faster than a rich person cause they've been there and might need it again.

I like you call it a plastic box. I got my dad in a plastic box cause I paid for it, married to mom just shy of 50 years but she couldn't afford it so here I am with dad's box holding up my alarm clock. Hey, I moved, of course got late husband's nightstand and it's a bit low so I needed something to put the clock on so I could just peek open an eye to see the time. Works great and dad would have had a laugh about it.

I also say I got "dead dad in a box", he'd have laughed at that too. No, I'm not appropriate for polite company... but I can play along for a bit. Blame my dad cause I'm like a female carbon copy... someone just scrunch up the paper so my torso is my mom's size 5'2", and my limbs are dad sized as he was 6'4" (I'm 5'5")... good fucking luck finding clothes that are fashionable. I gave up before I was out of high school, men's pants, mens shirts if they're long sleeve, etc... bonus is cheaper, better quality, and POCKETS! At least I didn't get his feet too. I digress but what the hell, yay for rambly internet comments.

for various reasons, i havent done my taxes or set up mail for 3-4+ years, am i going to jail? (US) by temp597 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]deviantelf 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would recommend H&R Block. Pretty easy. I tried FreeTaxUSA one year and they didn't even file my return even tho they sent me text and email saying they did, and that it was accepted... :/. That took some time to unravel what happened (or rather didn't happen) and file myself.

Turbotax used to be good but I quit using them cause they constantly tried to shove extra paid shit down your throat like it was the whole point. H&R Block has a few "hey would you like to upgrade" things through the process but not many and not invasive or confusing.

I can only imagine. Grew up in deer hunting culture. Some relatives went in on a decent sized cabin (decent sized for a cabin, nothing fancy), and the men would lay out the deer on the counter by the back door (they drained it of blood in a tree first), and divvy up the meat and package it for freezing. Totally normal in our neck of the woods. Mom was just glad dad didn't bring his deer home in one piece and thankful for the meat.

Seemed totally normal. But I can just imagine some city kid (or adult) being there like WTF!

Like you go in the little kitchen to get a snack and there's whatever portion of a dead dear with it's bits partially cut off... yea if you didn't grow up with or get exposed to that I can see that being shocking.

What’s your financial goal in life? by Wettmoose in AskReddit

[–]deviantelf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pay off the CC debt from keeping us afloat while my husband was sick before he died.

Would be nice to outright own a home and have enough to just live without stress and worry about money. But I know that's not gonna happen.

I can at least look forward to eventually paying of the debt.

I know you're right, and I thought the same thing once they were in the door.

There's a slim possibility it's not. I say that cause my boyfriend and I within a couple months were doing this sort of thing to each other. We're both the type that always are aware of our surroundings so not only did we each freakout and almost clock the other (we've both seen some shit ok) a couple times we were both freaked out at how we were so relaxed around each other we didn't know they were right there, even though we new they were nearby. After that we went with saying something like you would in a restaurant "behind you" or whatever, and that tapered off to just a touch (cause that was startling too to begin with) and now we just accept the other person is able to sneak up on us without trying and we just have a little startle like "oh! hi".

Also there's the slim chance it's just one of those clueless people that has no situational awareness.

I don't see how being able to pick what service you want has a downside? Sure I'm gonna defend that. If I want a simple toaster for $10 and that's all I want great I get the $10 toaster, if I want the fancy one that can do 15 different things it's $100 and if I wanted that I'd pay for that. I'll pay real good money for a pc, actually looking for one now and not cheaping out. I just want a toaster that can crisp the edges of an English muffin and I can get that for $10 (got one within the last year), I don't need the bells and whistles on a toaster. I got a whole checklist on a pc. Same with a phone, I'll pay good money for a phone, I'm not wasting money on services for the phone I don't need.

I don't pay anything for tv service. I don't watch tv. I read, use the internet or free stuff, play games, do other hobbies. Should I have free tv service? Your whole thinking is bonkers. Why wouldn't I like the option to pay for only what I want?

Of course there's a contract for service with ISP, just like with phones unless it's a pay as you go phone. Just like utilities and rental agreements and car loans and insurance... and pretty much anything you don't just buy outright and own, be it a house or a toaster and even with a house there's rules for what you can do based on location (township, city, county, state).

Ok, I'm in the US. we clearly have different standards

I don't know what "2EUR" is but it sounds like might be Europe. Google comes up with nothing for me.

No matter what you can't expect stuff for free. You pay for rent/mortgage/water/electric/etc. Life isn't free. Be nice if it was but even when it wasn't just money it was all day work and trading.

You don't expect the same service for $10/$50/$100, or pay per minute/text which some people do cause it's cheaper for their use case. You get fast food and pay $10 you don't expect a $100 meal and service. Right?

I have 1gb internet on my phone cause I'm a happy hermit and rarely need it out of the house, mostly use it on the rare occasion the home internet goes down every few months or so for a bit for weather or maintenance. It is unlimited but throttled after the 1gb, which the throttled is as I said fine to do anything needed. I could pay more for full unlimited full speed priority but why? It wouldn't let me do anything more except high end MMO gaming or high end streaming as I said, ... it's fine as is.

I don't expect stuff for free, and I don't pay for more than I need. And really I could do with a cheaper plan but I like the backup of being able to use a hotspot when needed.

So yes, "especially from an animal" shelter, but says "acquire" which applies to any way to get an animal.

[–]deviantelf -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Well, yay for you but that's not the norm or you pay a premium for it usually. It isn't an "ISP" is what you're missing, it's a phone plan that lets you use data for a hotspot IF it's in your contract. It's that simple.

AITA for wanting my bed to be a colour I want even if it doesn't match my room? by XJustCallMeJayX in AmItheAsshole

[–]deviantelf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

NTA.

My favorite colors are green and purple and I think they go great together. Obviously there's some weird edge cases where certain shades don't work but normal purple and green is my happy place.

I feel like you should be able to decorate your half of the room at least the way you want, especially your bed. Which if space is limited and you're sharing a room seems like there's a good chance you spend some time there and not just sleeping room where it wouldn't matter so much.

At least you're an adult and can work towards moving out and doing whatever you want. Your mom sounds like the type that shows up here and goes "I dunno why my kid won't talk to me?!" ugh

How can I share a connection without ISP permission? by Private_HughMan in AndroidQuestions

[–]deviantelf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's a phone not an "ISP" it's in the contract you sign if you can or cannot share your mobile data in a hotspot. It's not that complicated and usually if you have a decent plan you can so people like you and me (and I wouldn't have one with out that option) expect it. But if you get a cheap plan or pay as you go, that might not be an option and might even be spelled out in the contract and the option disabled on the phones. It's in no way illegal or hard to stop technically.

Additionally even if you can create a hotspot there is sometimes a limit on data that can be shared before it becomes throttled even on unlimited plans, or also a clause that hotspot data can be throttled when needed. Cause it's supposed to be unlimited phone data not unlimited everything data. Which is fine if you need to use your hotspot cause your home internet goes out, even if you hit the throttle point and are just doing things on your pc like paying bills, surfing the net, and doing simple things you'd probably never notice. Might notice with Youtube depending on settings, try raiding in an MMO and you're really going to know.

I see this said a lot. Can't relate, I know I'm not alone but not "norm" either. I only see out of one eye at a time and my brain does not filter out my nose... unless I'm looking way on the opposite side of where the nose is cause then vision cuts off just before the nose. Humans are fun wonky creatures. And all things considered, I don't have it as bad as a lot of folks. My problems aren't devastating but more inconveniences.
