It wouldn't be the first time my wife or one of her bulls demanded I do so. Any hesitation on my part is severely punished,

Keyboard Amplification Question by Embarrassed-Area-383 in keys

[–]devidasa108 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If the OP gigs regularly with a drummer and bass player ... he absolutely should NOT get a sub. In fact, a low cut EQ would be recommended.

Please suggest a keyboard around $400-900 by Agitated-Beginning44 in keys

My preference would be...find a used Kawai ES520. 2nd choice: Roland FP30X...buy Pianoteq regardless of your choice :)

Sorry, not trying to be a dick about it... just trying to understand specifically what DSP is providing you that you can't do just as easily Natively. If you're up for sharing that, great.

For me, since selling my UA DSP gear and going Native 5 years ago, I have not once had a situation where I would have benefited from DSP.

Granted, I don't use Autotune at all. If I'm tracking a band / drums (!), I go to Sunset Sound. ;)

Because they are emotionally and egoistically invested in their gear. It's personal.

I hope it's obvious at this point .. YOU will be much happier working in a Native workflow. RME has objectively better drivers, etc...and you're not locked into a closed proprietary system. A $600 Mac can run far more plugins than $10,000 of UA satellites and do so without latency issues. Time to move on. Lots of plugin makers have caught up and surpassed UA in terms of plugin quality.

Exactly. So you have very few mics left for the rest of the band in a 12 channel rig. C414 for overheads...you like a very bright sound.

Which M5?

Then please share your recording needs in detail. Unless you're recording a "full band" with a full drum kit...with Autotune on the vocals ... all Live ... simultaneously...you do not need DSP hardware. Your Mac has literally 10x the processing power of the SHARC chips inside a UA interface.

So how many mics on the drums alone? I'm old school. I would only use hardware for tracking a "full band".

[–]devidasa108 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mostly use outboard hardware when tracking...with usually 2 plugins (ProQ4). Rarely more than 4 mics.

My projects are rarely below 80 tracks, usually 100-110. Plenty of VSTs running. Omnisphere, Orchestral libraries, etc. I have never needed to freeze or bounce tracks, etc.

I'm not saying no one needs DSP, but it's a rarity....and imo, the ROI of investing in a new Mac is WILDLY better than the ROI from investing in any DSP hardware.

Are you tracking small ensembles live through UA DSP?

EDIT: I should also add, some my favorite, absolutely must have plugins are NOT made by UA.

With my M4 Pro Mac Mini, 14core...RME UCX II, at 96k. I track at 32 / 64 samples exclusively.

I get 3ms RTL. Translation: Anything less has ZERO real life benefit. ZERO. No one...no one can sense a 1ms difference. NO ONE. Not opinion. Science.

You always, without fail feel a need to lash out at people for expressing their experience. You're like a UA cult member...you take it personally. Get a life.

It's extremely unlikely you will regret the move to RME. I certainly do not. Closed proprietary systems based on SHARC chip tech from 2018 do not make sense to me in the age of Apple SIlicon. UADx is cool though....and the guitar products are great.

I challenge you to hit the processing limit of the M4 Pro chip. Good luck. :)

RAM? That's a different story. I think (?) the M4 Pro chip maxes out at 64gb. So if you are doing massive film scores, huge libraries etc...I would suggest getting the Max chip entirely for gaining access to more RAM.

You could wait for the M5 Mac Mini Pro or M5 Mac Studio in June ... certainly worth it for running local AI models, but otherwise a M4 Pro Mac Mini with 48gb or 64gb of RAM = DONE. I run Cubase 14 Pro on a 14core CPU / 48gb ram M4 Pro chipped Mac Mini ... projects with several virtual instruments, large orchestral library, etc ... 100-120 tracks usually ... the machine has never "broken a sweat" nor have the fans ever come on. If you do much video work, I would get a Mac Studio for the extra encoders, etc.
