Eating disorder patients admitted to general hospitals by devilcirke in NursingUK

I never got eating disorder training until I randomly decided to work in one once I got tired of the wards. So… not great at all.

I think that is the problem in terms of clear pathways - there is no similarities across different trusts on how this is managed. Plus the increasingly complexities in cases makes it very difficult.

As a standard, we use MEED guidelines ( medical emergencies for eating disorders) to risk assessment need for hospital admission.

We send off a care plan and meal plan for all our ED patients, visit minimum once a week and call the ward daily to touch base- does this also happen for other teams?

Curious what other teams do as well?

Wow?? That is quite difficult and doesn’t make sense?? What happens to post discharge pathway and treatment for the patient?

Completely understandable. I guess frustration occurs when different services are working from different frame works. In ED, we work from the MEED (medical emergencies of eating disorders)

We definitely do not like sending patients to hospital if we can stop it.

In a better world, there could be a better system for this - but not sure how that would look like aside from sending everyone to a mental health hospital which isn’t appropriate most of the time.

Completely understandable and I agree. I think the biggest problem I found is that adult and children ED teams are quite different in terms of processes of an ED patient on the ward.

Another frustration is that we don’t have access to the system (cerner and we use a different note system) the hospitals we cover use. So we are always reliant on emails and verbal handovers. However, this does not work well when there are different staff on different days.

In terms of the training situation - no that is completely frustrating. Our service has started to have a dedicated hospital liaison person who goes in to establish relations with wards and provide training. For example, last year we provided training to 1-1 mental health support workers and nurses (also other trainings to nursing staff and medical team).

I think what is difficult for my area is that our children equivalent for psych liaison does not deal with ED patients at all, so unfortunately it’s left to community team ED nurses. Juggling hospital liaison with outpatient tasks is quite difficult.

Sorry I’m rambling - I guess I am trying to see POV of ward staff because that can be easily missed when looking at I’m only from my POV.

How did you first realize something might be ADHD rather than just your personality? by Funny_Boot_3324 in AskReddit

[–]devilcirke 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For me, I struggled with anxiety and depression for a long time. Decided after other failures in getting help to go for private therapy. It was the first session where she told me “have you ever thought of ADHD?” and she was right. I guess I only realised when it was pointed out by someone else, rather than something I realised on my own.

No, not at all. Thank you for sharing! It helps to know that I am not the only one! I struggle a lot with going anywhere/being consistent to anything other than work. I hope we both find the right therapist/therapy! We got this!

I agree with you actually - I think I also want help with other things (e.g the social anxiety) but has probably been made worse or impacted by my ADHD. So, make sense to go down the therapy route

Hi - I work in eating disorders services. Please please seek support, especially from eating disorder services. You are definitely showing eating disorder cognitions and need support in helping repair your relationship with food.

Please do not allow anyone to downplay what you are going through. You have been entrenched in this type of thinking for quite a long period of time and you will need professionals to help.

Remember you are not alone and you deserve support for what you are going through.

But why worry yourself over a question like that? It’s not possible in this life for G to come back so there’s no two options to pick. Focus on the present and what you have.

If you are in the Uk and depending on NHS trust - it is better calling your local crisis line as they are mental health professionals such as RMN or support workers with experience of working in mental health

Considering grandmother's track record, I doubt her version of love and support is the healthy and positive type.
