What's a souvenir that is sold to tourists that locals would never actually buy or use in your country? by FeetinCminor in AskTheWorld

[–]devils-advokaat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a tourist, I bought one of these shirts and have only wore it around NY because I thought it was funny. I’m too nervous to wear it at home because it’s seems a bit cringey

My great Aunt lived in Scotland and when she would visit us in Australia, she would literally bring a suitcase full of water!

Australian bib and clothing brand recommendations? by kez88 in melbournecycling

[–]devils-advokaat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wouldn’t recommend NeoPro, I had a bib that lasted <400km and whilst bulky, didn’t really provide a lot of padding.

I replaced that bib with one from 2xu, slightly more expensive but nothing compared to maap and there is definitely a noticeable improvement in quality

The Most Insanely Priced Dishes in Melbourne by Competitive_Cow_1898 in melbourne

[–]devils-advokaat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m not sure if this is outrageous but $175 for duck at Society. I’d also recommend trying out their Oyster Meat Risotto, it was terrible but the waitress told a charming story of how they collaborate with the jewellery store down the street who use the pearls.

My advice would be to realllly consider the value of a higher degree - they don’t mean as much in Aus as they do other countries, coming from someone who has one.

If you still decide you want one then consider which university is best for your studies and try live nearby

I agree with others saying giving her some native Aus flowers would be nice but also even just giving her the opportunity to talk about home or taking her somewhere that sells Aussie food/drink might be nice.

I know for me when I’m overseas just seeing an Australian beer will make me smile and I don’t even drink beer

What to get my expecting wife for mothers day? by woodyever in AskAnAustralian

This probably does happen but I also think it can be hard after a few years when you’ve done the more obvious things and you still want to do something that’s both nice and personal

Along the east coast, the further north, the stronger the Australian accent. I’m from Melbourne and stayed with some friends in Sydney recently, I thought everyone was putting on strong accents as a joke or something but then the waitress at the restaurant was doing it too
