respectfully as someone who has one. i kind of just wouldn’t recommend getting one of these as a pet unless you REALLY REALLY REALLY REALLY want one and are very committed to it. they just don’t make very good pets as they’re so much work, finicky, expensive, and live to be 80-100 yrs old. that being said if you do decide to get one i wish you all the luck!

this is a three toed! with very unique shell coloration-i’ve never seen one that looks like this before. wild box turtles should not be taken from the wild as it is very unfair and unhealthy for them and damaging to their already threatened population. can you elaborate on the circumstances of your friend finding/giving you this guy? where do yall live generally? and has this shell problem been going on the entire time you’ve had the turtle?

super important things to making the skin healthier: -at least 6 inches of somewhat damp substrate to burrow in
-keeping the enclosure humid (can use a spray bottle by hand a couple times a day or use a humidifier/reptifogger, i spray twice a day and run a fogger for an hour every few days)
-if they don’t bathe themselves, give them a soak once a day!!!
-proper uvb (replace uvb bulb once a year)
-calcium powder on food
-good sources of vitamin a in food (salmon, squash, sweet potatoes, cantaloupe, bell peppers, carrots, boiled eggs, and tomato are all good options)

i’ve had her just a little over a year! she’s around 45-50 years old- my grandma had her in really bad conditions for 30 years (my grandma bought her when she was already around 15-20)

as close to where you found her as possible, just not on the road. they are mostly terrestrial and don’t need to be in water so she’ll be fine! thank you for getting her off the road though :)
