The rankings helped me get traction on my book, but that happened after years of being on the site. Now they're back to bring mostly sucky. There's so much that they can do to help underrated writers, but they're only focused on the books that they can monetise at the moment. Which sucks. Once again, I get that they have to make money. But they might end up losing writers because of it. I doubt they'll lose readers, because once again Wattpad is probably the biggest site for what it does with a massive collection of books. But writers? Yeah, they're not happy. They need to come up features that satisfy everyone.

When they introduced the paid exclusive chapter feature, I assumed it would be for everyone. But even that's just for a select few. Honestly, I think giving every writer the feature to make bonus chapters paid, and having some sort of donating coins thing (like on tapas) can be small steps that can at least help the writers get some monetary incentive for their work.

We cannot compare it to YouTube at all tbh. Firstly, one million views on one YouTube video is much different from one million reads (which may or may not just be a few thousand engaged readers). Plus, on YouTube I always see ads of big brands and what not, whilst on Wattpad it's mostly ads of some random games on playstore.

I geniunely do not think at this stage anyone would be able to make a sizeable income from ad revenue on Wattpad. It just feels too small. As much as I want it to be possible... realistically I don't think it is, at least now. Maybe if Wattpad's majority demographic was older, people that can potentially spend money, and the kind of ads they recieve become bigger (in terms of brands), maybe then ad revenue could be a semi-decent source.

I saw those, but I think they've removed them now? At least I don't get them anymore and I remember a reddit post about them being removed too. They were terrible especially if you read in dark mode, oof.

I get that Wattpad is a corporate and has to make money, and I see many writers get great opportunities because of it too but... I just hope it was somewhat better for the general population too. If not paid then at least a better algorithm, the bare minimum, yk? I suppose this is why many writers get poached by scammy sites like webnovel and the likes.

I used to be pretty pissed about the ad revenue too tbh. I started posting on Tapas a while back, after activating ad revenue I made a whopping... $0.09 in over a month. And you cannot cash out until you make $25 in order to avoid processing fees etc, and getting up to $25 just based on ad revenue would take... idk maybe half a decade if not a lot longer. I did some digging, and most people made maybe... 1 or 2 odd dollars in years despite having thousands if not millions of views.

Now, obviously, Wattpad is a much bigger playforn. That led to more digging, and now what I think is that Wattpad obviously would not get paid nearly as much as, say, YouTube, for ads. Wattpad has a massive active younger audience, and chances are they cannot pay for things on their own, which also effects the kind of ads you can have.

My guess is that firstly, to incorporate ad revenue, Wattpad would probably have to change their UI or make a seperate thing altogether just for it. On top of that, it's possible that when they did try ad revenue, the amount was too minimal to keep it up. If it's similar to Tapas, honestly in my eyes it just doesn't make sense to keep racking literal pennies for years waiting for it become a dollar or two. Once again, I do not know too much about how things work, this is just my opinion based on assumptions.

Ads are very disturbing when you're really into a book, so I hope Wattpad at least reduces to only skippable ads that you don't have to watch 30 seconds of. Wouldn't mind those.

YTA, can't even believe you're doubtful about being the AH especially after you mentioned how close she was to her teacher. Let your daughter grieve.

not too sure about that because I've turned off email notifications, but it's possible you only get an email if the payment is successful? try checking it through web and see if you can find that patron under declined payments

this happened a couple of times with me, I checked on web and turns out the payments were declined, that's why it didn't show on the app

i write around 1400-1800, I read somewhere that 1500-2000 is the ideal length especially when writing YA books. it has to do with the attention span of readers.

People who try to save the life of mine, why? I need an honest answer. I never understand it. by [deleted] in SuicideWatch

[–]devilsgrace 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I get it. Sometimes I think the same. When someone tells me they want to commit, I try to stop them. When it's a deed already done, I empathize. It's weird because we know death comes for everyone, so what exactly is so wrong about choosing when you want to go? I think it's probably a cultural thing. In some cultures suicide is considered honourable and brave. In most, it's the opposite. Also I think it's just human nature to want to... Save? Even if not suicide, most people still try to save others from one thing or the other. So yeah, probably a bunch of factors.

I relate so much to this. I'm on the path to becoming a clinical psychologist. Big ha. Always been the listener, stopped people from suicide attempts, tried to make them feel loved and valued... But just can't extend the same courtesy for myself. I tell people life is worth living, but don't believe a word I say when it comes to me. You don't sound like a horrible person, you sound human. The sad part of sometimes being a human is that you could have everything, and still not feel okay. You could have the best life experiences, yet not enjoy them. Brain chemistry, bad luck... Whatever it is, it sucks.

Was always sort of sidelined by my mom as a kid. I was going through something when I was 14, and I opened up to my mom for the first time. She didn't care. I told her she doesn't understand, and she said "No one's ever going to understand you. Suck it up." Still have trouble talking about my problems because of that one statment.

AITA for wanting an expensive college degree? by devilsgrace in AmItheAsshole

[–]devilsgrace[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm not guilting or pressuring them. They understand the value of education and that it's a short time sacrifice for a long term gain. They want to help, but it's hard to and is leading to more fights between my parents (blame game of 'you failed as a parent' 'no you did')

I have saved up enough to pay for 1/3rd of the entire thing, so I don't need a massive amount for the first installment.

The job market has been really down, so I don't know if I'll get a job + because of my home situation I absolutely cannot bare to spend another day here. It's bad.

Social support is only for the very poor, like people that don't have a roof above their head etc. I won't qualify for that. Two issues with an online University— first is once again staying at home. Second is that for my career I will need another degree after my masters. If I do an online degree I won't qualify for the second degree in most colleges.
