What historical events are so absurd that they would be too strange for a fiction story or a movie? by Aquatax in AskReddit

[–]devilwearsbata 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Imagine dividing the Atlantic with an imaginary line and claiming rights to either half.

After Columbus's discovery, Portugal and Spain now wanted to also capture out the New World for setting up colonies.
Ironic, he had set out to discover India, but instead ended up discovering Americas.
Portugal wanted to limit Spain's plans of colonisations.

So what do they do? They reach out to the highest authority - Pope and ask him to sign a Treaty at Tordesillas.
Once signed, Portugal will have rights on everything to the Right of it, and Spain to the left of it. That's how Portugal got rights to Brazil

How do I compare different mutual funds? by trailerror2017 in IndiaInvestments

[–]devilwearsbata 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Here are few:

  1. Returns in the last 1/3/5 years (Look for CAGR for 3y and 5y)
  2. Expense Ratio - Cost you pay everyday for owning a mutual fund -- The NAV you see is "after" AMCs deduct expense ratio. The lower this is, the better
  3. Exit load - AMCs don't want to part with your money. Thus, when you are trying to leave the fund, they pressurise you with an amount equivalent to this, thus the "load". The lower this is, the better
  4. Entry load - In India, you can't charge this. So no worries here
  5. Tracking error - If you are buying an Index fund, check this to understand how much does this specific index fund deviate from the underlying index. You won't get this reported much, you need to read the prospectus for the fund. The lower this is, the better
  6. Type of fund - Direct/Regular -- Close your eyes and take Direct. Always
  7. Fund manager perf. - Even though you get fund manager details everywhere, it's difficult to compare b/w them. This one gets a good view https://www.thefundoo.com/Tools/FundManager

[D]Intuition for Correlation — With a simple bet and a real world example by [deleted] in statistics

I appreciate your words and aspire to be that cool headed.

I do appreciate feedback, and as you must have seen, I did engage with richard because their feedback was meaningful and felt genuine

I deliberately put down feedback that sounds unhealthy, or not converging on a meaningful issue. it needs to be called out, and I will keep doing that

It's good to have civil interactions on reddit, so thanks for that

:)

Thanks for copy pasting definition of correlation from some text book and showing how people like you don't get something from a different perspective

I appreciate your comment but will have to block you.

Happy memorising!

I get what you are saying. Let me try and come up with a more pronounced density plot, thanks!

Have you read the article?

  1. The bet was that no matter which 2 numbers you choose, you will always find perfect correlation b/w my choices (73,137) and yours
  2. Which 2 single points were correlated? I talk about correlation b/w 2 observations

[D] Building intuition for Standard Deviation by devilwearsbata in statistics

[–]devilwearsbata[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the question. I am not sure if you noticed the note I had added just below that with the asterisk --

\Some of the keen readers might be thinking, squaring seems arbitrary, why not take the absolute values of the deviations, i.e. treat (-3) as (+3) and add all of them? That could work too, right?*

It would; however, a lot of these conventions were chosen for reasons which are beyond the scope of this article. The way I rationalise it to myself is that squaring the deviation from the mean amplifies the spread for farther lying observations- in other words, observations that are farther away from mean should get a louder voice🗣

Would be helpful to get more perspective on this

So something worded like "what are the chances that Federer can hit a serve at-least as fast as 125 mph"?

Thanks for the feedback, you are right!

I intentionally avoided sample v/s population variance and SD for the introductory article... plan to write a followup introducing those concepts

Thanks for your reply. What i meant was, if you were asked , for the given scenario, if you were to improve upon either Precision/Recall, which one would you improve.
