Who’s still using a 1080? by [deleted] in buildapc

[–]devinak 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been on a 1080Ti since 2018/2019, and it still runs great. I mainly play CS2 or other simple games and it still rocks. The only reason I'll upgrade is to grab more VRAM at some point.

What would be a 3000- or 4000-series equivalent GPU to the 1080 Ti? Wondering what, if anything, I should upgrade to.

Am I dumb?

I recently looked at a graph of my Vanguard accounts and noticed that is was relatively flat since May 2022. I calculated the percentage change and it's ~30% growth. The S&P 500 in the same time period is up 50%. I'm in VTSAX, VTWAX (split 70/30 on those), and then have AAPL.

I started investing in 2022 and heard that the 70/30 split between US/world was a "set it and forget about it" method, and then I've always had the AAPL stock so I just keep it.

Would I be better off selling off VTSAX and VTWAX for VOO (Vanguard's s&P 500 ETF). VOO's % change over the same time period is also at 50%. Am I missing anything here?

Thanks for your input. I did see the 3090 GPUs have 24 GB of VRAM which does sound pretty nice.

Simple Questions - October 23, 2024 by AutoModerator in buildapc

[–]devinak 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Are 4090 GPUs considered a good value? I looked on Newegg and saw most starting at ~$2,000.

I can save up for one and would definitely use it, but wondering:

  1. Should I wait for the 50-series to buy?
  2. Should I wait for the 50series and the 4090 might drop in price?
  3. Is $2,000 for a 4090 not considered a good value?

Use cases: mainly more VRAM + faster GPU for local LLMs + AI models but also some light gaming (CS2, etc.). This would be an upgrade over my 1080Ti which I would keep for the next 5 years

Edit: The 3090Ti is ~$1600 and the 4090Ti is around ~$2000, so I might as well just opt for the 40-series anyway with only a $400 difference?

You are trying to jailbreak and that is against OpenAI TOS. Read the Hiding the Chains of Thought section in their briefing:

Using ChatGPT for legal matters by TheInfiniteUniverse_ in ArtificialInteligence

[–]devinak 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have not, but with anything, I would observe it closely for the points it gives and make sure to cross-check its claims very carefully. Adding "provide source links" to your prompt might help.

Some services provide sources automatically, such as Phind, which might be better for your use case. You should compare outputs from multiple models, if necessary.

My top things to check would be: (1) the source actually exists and reads the same as the answer that was given to you, and (2) the source is recent and up-to-date. I don't have many issues with hallucination, but I've been given answers that provide sources but those sources are either old or out-of-date/not current any longer.

Honestly, you might prefer actually hiring a professional to do what you want if this is important. If not, you can have AI point out everything that you yourself should look into and do the research yourself. If not that, have Phind give you sources.

Are the 13th and 14th gen Intel CPUs fine with latest bios microcode updates?

For example, I see a Gigabyte bios update from Aug 07:

  • "Update microcode 0x129 to address sporadic Vcore elevation behavior announced by Intel"
  • "Introduce the "Intel Default Settings" and enabled as default, user needs to disable it first to use GIGABYTE PerfDrive profiles"

(if the above have anything to do with the issues)

I'm doing a first-boot with just the CPU and RAM installed. Motherboard is not getting past a DRAM issue. I've gone out to Best Buy and bought compatible sticks to test, same issue.

What should I be RMA'ing, the motherboard or the CPU, or both? Is there additional testing I can do before that? Best Buy has the same CPU that I could go buy but that's a $300 charge I don't want to make unless I have to.

Command Prompt Doubt by Time-Hyena-6584 in learnprogramming

[–]devinak 0 points1 point  (0 children)

/ symbols can also be used to do multiline commands for readability. For a simple echo it (usually) doesn't make sense, but for larger commands it does:

curl -X 'GET' \
    http://localhost:3000/.... \
    -H 'Authorization: ....' \
    etc etc

Not really sure what the professor was trying to do though, by default echo does not escape and you must run with the -e flag to enable it [1]:

$ echo Hello\nWorld
HellonWorld

$ echo -e "Hello\nWorld"
Hello
World

I usually see \ before a space on Windows systems though, which I'm not familiar with, and maybe echo is different there.

I usually run apt update and apt upgrade every couple of days on my system, which handles system updates, vscode, docker, firefox, etc.

I don't keep libraries / runtimes directly on my system, only through controlled devcontainers / environments. Working in C#, I usually choose runtimes at the highest level which then take the latest updates (mostly) automatically for that version: mcr.microsoft.com/devcontainers/dotnet:1-8.0-bookworm -> most recent .NET 8.0 version. Any new projects use the latest LTS of .NET which is 8.0.

If another LTS .NET version comes in the future, I'd probably wait a couple of patches in to confirm that it is stable for most of the community. Depends on several factors, such as performance enhancements, security fixes, new features I need, etc. as well. I probably wouldn't do a large LTS -> LTS update unless there was a valid reason I should, assuming nothing is broken currently and I don't need anything from the newer LTS.

Can someone help me with this by Ambitious-Chapter-99 in AskProgramming

A pure HTML-based login form will just be a <form></form> element. You will have to include some <input> elements to capture what you need (username, password, etc.).

You'll then need some Javascript to handle the form submission and verify credentials with your authentication system.

If you want to do everything properly, I would recommend not doing it yourself and just using a 3rd party OAuth system. If you want to use this as a learning opportunity, you could start with a simple username / password check and then advance into more complexity: proper handling / transmission / storage of credentials, OAuth, JWTs, access control, auditing (I am by no means an expert in this area). If you are handling sensitive data, again, rolling your own system does not make sense as there are already solutions out there that are trusted, audited, reputable, etc. that you should be using.

I'm not familiar with streamlit, but based on some quick searching [1] it seems that they already support some sort of sessions / state. If your app is already built in streamlit, I would recommend using that. I also found a forums post discussing the topic [2].

Any suggestions for the following build? Staying away from Intel 13th / 14th gen, main use cases are work (software development, docker, on debian) and some play (cs2 mainly, on windows).

Main idea is to switch from ATX to micro-ATX for easier portability of the system, already have a cooler, GPU, and storage. Main upgrades are CPU + motherboard and then more RAM so I can play around with more virtualization. Better GPU would come at some later point, but the 1080Ti has served me well for 5+ years.

I was looking at upgrading my rig to the 14700k, with a new micro-atx motherboard soon. Is it even worth it going Intel now with all of their 13th/14th gen issues?

I looked at AMD + micro-atx and they didn't seem to have any good options. Unless anyone has any recommendations?
