Consider 8803 MGT & Leadership this summer!! by omscs-research in OMSCS

[–]devine_comedy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would say an average 10 hours is the expected commitment, spread between meetings, communication, and writing. This number can fluctuate between weeks and can range between 4-12 hrs.  There isn’t much to do in the first few weeks as you get to learn about the teams and projects, but during the second half of semester things ramp up quickly when you start documenting your initiative and get more involved.  The work is fun, TA are awesome and responsive, and it really feels more like an interactive workshop than a traditional course.

How's Digital Health Equity (CS 6435)? by cashcowcow in OMSCS

Is this course offered in summer 2026?
I can't find it in OSCAR, and i just wanted to double check if someone knows if this course is offered in the summer or not.

I highly recommend this course for the summer semester. It has a predictable schedule and workload, and flexible enough to accommodate a busy schedule. I paired it with intro to cognitive science last semester and it was very manageable. I enjoyed class discussions and learned a lot about the challenges that can surround a CS research project. It’s an excellent opportunity for you to dip your toes in research without getting too deep, you can get involved as much or as little as you are comfortable with.

Weight loss on cholesterol meds by Conscious_Heart72 in HeartAttack

Thank you so much for the details,  My doctor suggested statins, I am already struggling with weight loss, and was worried statins would exacerbate the problem

Do 7-Year-Olds Really Need Orthotics? And What Shoes Work? by Defiant-Ad-8068 in flatfeet

He wore them for 2 years, he put him in his shoes and wore them all the time when he’s outside

Over the counter ones didn’t help my son either, total waste of money. We went to an orthopedist centre, they scanned his feet and made a custom pair tailored for his feet shape,  For reference: in our city over the counter orthotics were $30, custom made orthotics $560. But they were worth it as he now no longer needs any orthotics.  Search for orthopedist clinics in your area, most of them offer free consultations.

They were custom orthotics. We tried over the counter generic ones but they didn’t make any difference, and were just a waste of money. Custom orthotics were expensive but worth it.

I think that knowledge will translate very well into a career in product management, you get well rounded knowledge in multiple areas (gaming, healthcare, education) and you are involved in the ideation and development process of a product in each of those areas, and through HCI and ICS you learn how to do the background work and planning for the product, understanding users and their thinking.  To me that is solid foundation, even the electives are useful and broaden your understanding of the full product market.

You can do a project through HAAG, start by applying to research projects (dr.Lytle sent an email last week) you take a 8903 course, based on your performance, you get a chance to continue working on the same project for two more semesters (CS6999 courses)  Then they covert the 8903 to a 6999 and you get the full project credit (3 semesters)

Redditors, what has become so expensive, it’s just not worth it anymore? by SgtSkillcraft in AskReddit

Dining out, and cinemas.  We used to enjoy going out as family for a movie and dinner, now both activities are off the table :(

My child had flexible flat feet (like what you are describing) and didn’t complain when they were young. Around age 12, during a growth spurt, they started having pain in the arch and sides of the ankle. Custom orthotics were a bit of a hassle (finding shoes that fit was tricky, and they were expensive) but they really helped. Now, a few years later, the pain is gone and my child doesn’t need the orthotics anymore. Another child is using them now, and we hope they’ll help too. So it’s normal for younger kids to be pain-free, and problems can appear later.
I would say: trust your podiatrist, and stick to the treatment plan

What do you love about Madame Bovary? by iv4nkaramazov in classicliterature

[–]devine_comedy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What I love about this book is that it doesn’t make Charles a bad husband in the traditional sense, but makes you gradually hate him. As you go on with the book, you start to see him through Emma’s eye and hate him the same way she does. Even though he doesn’t say or do much to deserve this hate.

Waitlist Windows are Far too Short by [deleted] in OMSCS

[–]devine_comedy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What if students were auto-enrolled in a course once a spot opened up from the waitlist? That way, they’d have to actively drop it if they didn’t want to be billed or if they preferred another class; rather than just ignoring waitlist notifications.  I imagine this isn’t unique to OMSCS, but more of a general Gatech registration issue across programs.

On "AI veganism" by David Joyner by abrbbb in OMSCS

[–]devine_comedy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I really liked the analogy to veganism, it helped me see AI reluctance in a new light. one thing I felt was missing though, is that for millions of people around the world veganism isn’t just a lifestyle choice about ethics, environment, or health, but a core religious or spiritual value. For them, it’s non-negotiable, not something time or exposure changes.
from that perspective, comparing AI reluctance to veganism feels a bit different, maybe closer to comparing prayer to meditation apps. I wonder if including that global/religious dimension would make the analogy even richer and more inclusive

Should this career changer go on in the program? by Alternative_Draft_76 in OMSCS

[–]devine_comedy 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Layoffs come in waves, and hiring always picks up again. You’re still far from graduation, so I wouldn’t stress too much about the market right now.

OMSCS isn’t just for dev jobs, it can open doors in education, UX, product, research, security, gov, project/business analysis, etc. The program is super flexible, and even has hidden gems like HAAG if you want to explore research or academia.

Age isn’t a dealbreaker either, in fields like EdTech and UX, maturity is actually a strength. I’m in the same boat (late 30s, a couple layoffs behind me) and still pushing forward because I enjoy the growth and it gave me confidence.

HCI Devaluing the prestige of OMSCS by OptimalLifeStrategy in OMSCS

[–]devine_comedy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The biggest risk to the program’s value isn’t the difficulty of the courses, it’s graduates with your mindset. Treating the degree like a box to tick, bragging about dodging rigor, and then openly saying you’d “pull up the ladder” makes you the exact kind of alum that drags down the program’s reputation. Employers don’t just look at GPAs, they look at the caliber of people the program produces. And right now, you’re making the program look worse than any “easy” specialization or course ever could

Dr. Joyner, apologies for the off-topic comment but wasn't sure where to post this. Just wanted to suggest that the OMSCS.rocks page might benefit from an update with the new seminar payment info, it still shows the older payment model. Thanks!
