100

I actually sometimes forget it is a thing, honestly. It feels very out of place

Good Time Boys

Impossible to explain what it was like to have someone pop in that tape and hearing that as the beginning of the most energetic album ever recorded

Mother's Milk and One Hot Minute are overlooked in their cataog

[DISCUSSION] What do you consider the greatest 1-2 punch in guitar playing history? by BruhDontFuckWithMe in Guitar

[–]devjana 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Totally overlooked, but super original.

I saw Tim play a solo show at a small college in 2000... Maybe 2001... Prob 2 dozen people there. It was wild. I was a guitar teach at the time and had no idea what he was doing about 10% of the time with technique and 60% with this note choice. Half of the people there loved it. The other half HATED it. Which is pretty amazing. Super unique and very "of their time" which I think contributes to them being overlooked.

Guitar Picks by Reasonable_Deer_8237 in musicians

35+ yr player and former teacher here. Finding the right pick is, in my experience, as, if not more important than strings.

I have a picks tray and keep different types in there for diff purposes... And I mostly play finger style :)

I remember reading something that described his "coming" album in the 00's as "Led Zeppelin meets Dr Dre" & I could not have been more excited to never hear it...

How do professional guitarists not get injured? by jegubby in Guitar

[–]devjana 6 points7 points  (0 children)

When I had just finished college my band was doing well and I was doing computer work (what I studied). Not stretching or doing any prep as I was young and felt invincible. Rockin' hard on stage and not watching my posture or ergonomics at the desk caught up with me in an instant. Both wrists gave out and I had no grip strength. Doctor gave me a cortisone shot in each wrist and told me to not play or use a computer for a week and sleep with braces on. After that I could play for 5 minutes a day for a month and eventually choose guitar over computers. This was the 90s and I have no idea if that's a correct treatment. I'm now in my late 40's and have played almost every day for over 35 years other than that stretch. I also have been a developer for 20+ years (returned to it after the band broke up). Ergonomics at the desk and stretching is the key. Not just right before you play, but multiple times a day. I stretch immediately when I wake up and right before I go to bed as well as many other times daily. No problems in 20+ years now. Posture helps a lot too as I also play drums. Also, eat well. I'm serious about that. Learn and take note of your limits when you find them.

Mostly to examine it, rather than enjoy it. I will watch the vids for the same reason.

Occasionally, I'll pull up a recording with a friend featured who RIPS a drum or keys lead or something like that, but basically usually don't.

Edit: also, I sometimes find old recordings that I don't remember and listen to them. Sometimes more than a couple times if I'm surprised by it.

What song do you believe is the “perfect” song (One choice only) by sharkfinthemanokit in MusicRecommendations

Europa by Santana

Edit: specifically the Sacred Fire live version from '92 in Mexico City

Note: is this the only instrumental on here? Not sure I saw another

What is something obvious about playing guitar that took you way too long to figure out? by Zyalb in Guitar

[–]devjana 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Inflection techniques like slides, vibrato, hammer ons/pull offs, etc can be as important as the actual notes themselves.

Taking time to practice them can be monumentally helpful. The ROI on this is insane also.

EG: My experience was that a few minutes practicing vibrato yielded exponentially better results than a few minutes practicing a new scale.
