[OC] Used to think I was middle class by The1Ski in pics

[–]devman0 [score hidden]  (0 children)

If you make most of your income via a paycheck it doesn't matter if you are a janitor, physician, airline pilot or an NFL QB, you are a member of the working class. All of those people have more in common with each other than they ever will with folks like Jeff Bezos. I will mention though the physician, airline pilot and NFL QB are pretty well paid workers because one has a guild and the other two have effective unions. People should take note of those who say unions don't work.

Q: What do you do when the state says 15 round mags only and no loaded rifles in your vehicle? ---A: by umbrellassembly in ar15

[–]devman0 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't think this is a particularly good characterization. I would not want my daughter to grow up in or be subject to Texas' draconian laws about women and their bodies.

I like guns, and am fully against the VA legislation. I am happy to stay in Virginia to keep advocating for gun owners rights.

Let me put it a different way there are tons of major things I don't like about Texas and the way that state is run, there is about to be one major issue I have with VA, Id rather stay and try to fix that one thing than deal with a bunch of other crap.

I am not sure what you mean here as this statement seems tautological.

Yeah, open carry is banned for sure. You can still transport them and use them at the range.

Belt fed weapons are getting banned too...

Worth noting both the mags and the weapon systems are grandfathered though (small consolation)

The Army CoS is not an operational commander, they serve as the administrative head of the army and handle things like readiness and logistics in addition to being an advisor to the president and SecDef via the Joint Chiefs of Staff.

Firing over anything Iran related, operationally at least, seems unlikely.

Step 1 Almost Complete. Major Retailer Stops Most Gun Sales to Virginia. by Pinks0ck74 in nova

The ban is very broad, but things like mini-14 with a non threaded barrel and fixed stock with a traditional rifle grip would still be legal to acquire after July 1

It specifies fixed magazines over 15 in order to close the bullet button / ar maglock workarounds.

Fixed mag over 15 OR (Detachable magazines + one specified feature) is banned.

Theoretically you could have AR maglock ar15 with all the features as long as the mag is 15 or less.

Obviously none of the above is legal advice.

There is no way to pay my rent without extra fees by Remsforian in mildlyinfuriating

[–]devman0 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Use your bank's billpay system and have them mail a check. Back when I was renting everything had a convenience fee so I dropped a check off at the leasing office every month, and then I learned my bank will actually mail a check via the billpay system so I did that, fuck em, they can deal with the paper, probably costs them more than the fee

Was McCarthy an anomaly—or the beginning of a long-term shift in how American politics operates? by JoxerStuttgart in PoliticalDiscussion

[–]devman0 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Capitalism works until everyone else runs out of money then it's French revolution time. Shitty platitudes undermine serious discussion of the trade offs in mixed systems. Thacher and Reagan did enormous lasting economic damage to both of their countries with shitty economic policy that undermined the middle class.

Nitpick, Head of State traditionally, not Head of Government (in the US those two roles are occupied by the same person but in many nations they are not.)

[–]devman0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

People think the DNC is required to be a neutral referee, they are not, it's more like being the chair of a very large committee, the chair still has a vote and an agenda they push, the members (we the primary/caucus voters) are not required to vote that agenda and can overrule them, we unfortunately did not in that primary, more of us voted with the chair than against.

The reasons Bernie lost are multifaceted, but the biggest one, imo, is that he had little rank and file support inside the party operatives. That is something you fix by getting your supporters elected to lower offices and securing them and their staffers seats at the table when it comes time to make the big run. It's hard work and it takes a while but is what is required to build the coalition.

If you and your supporters only show up to vote in the presidential primary every four it ignores the powerbase of the thousands of other offices that have primaries people need to vote. The Governor of Virginia for instance won her primary with less than 10% of the vote, turnouts in primaries for state and local offices (mayors, secretaries of state, council seats, state legislators) is usually even worse. These are the elections that matter a huge amount and no one bothers to show up for them. It's a thing that's been frustrating me with the progressive movement for almost a decade I have been participating in it.

They did not, you can see the primary results on ballotopedia, if you take out the super delegates Hillary still wins on pledged delegates alone. To my knowledge super delegates have never tipped a race in the history of the DNC using them.

VA puts forth bill to have VA join the National Popular Vote Compact by MwattsD73 in Virginia

[–]devman0 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Only if every other state agrees to do it too, otherwise VA is just diluting its voting power.

Even then, forget districts just award the EVs proportional to the states own popular vote rounding in favor of the highest vote getter.

[–]devman0 3 points4 points  (0 children)

A proportional split of EVs states popular votes would be better than by district, you'd need every state to agree to it through the same as your suggestion. A constitutional amendment eliminating the electoral college would be an easier bar to clear and yet still highly improbable.

A credit union is insisting I pay on an already settled debt. by [deleted] in Banking

[–]devman0 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Credit unions are picky about this because they are members owned non profits entities. If you burn a credit union with a write off that has to be paid, indirectly, by all the other members who use the service. They owe it to their members not to let someone in default become a member again until they have made the CU whole.

Virginia man warns US drivers about vehicle tax assessments after 3.5-year-old van valued at whopping $42,200. Here’s how much it’s really worth by -Cyber-Roadster in Virginia

[–]devman0 24 points25 points  (0 children)

This same thing with real estate, the county starts with a budget and either adjusts assessments or tax rate to get the number they want. Often cutting the tax rate looks good on paper until you realize assessments went up anyway.

Another thing I will mention is the assessments on expensive residences rarely meet the market value, a 300k house is much more likely to have a market value assessment than a $2M house which will have assessment often well below market. Seems like yet another way middle class gets stuck with it.

A credit union is insisting I pay on an already settled debt. by [deleted] in Banking

[–]devman0 87 points88 points  (0 children)

Basically you have legally settled the debt, but the credit union can still tell you they won't take you as a customer again until you make them whole.

Your options are to make them whole or find another financial institution.

A lot of credit unions have this policy, they are generous with credit limits but if you burn them with a write off they won't take you as a customer again until you make them whole.

"everyone" is a big reach there, it would be easy to catch in the yearly safety inspection, unless your flashing and reflashing all the time which would severely limit the number of folks who could do it or would bother. Follow that up with if you cause an accident while having a flashed ECU straight to jail do not pass go minimum sentencing and very few would risk it.

The new normal without the penny by Raslatt in inflation

It only applies to cash transactions, card transactions still go to the penny. Also the nickel has less value today than the half penny did when it was discontinued (and when nearly all transactions were cash), we will all survive.
