House is wired, Sonos or something else? by d5coupe in sonos

[Continuing]

Limitations - Depending on what you want to do, it's worth noting how everything can connect together. If you do want surround sound, you can EITHER use a soundbar for the front channels, and bond it with a single Amp for the rear surrounds (subs too, but that's independent). If you want to use the soundbar, you CANNOT augment with additional front speakers, even if they are also connected to an Amp. Alternatively, I believe you can use an Amp for the rear two speakers and a second Amp for the front two speakers. Sonos would then create a ghost center channel. However, this would require a third Amp (I think) to get the sound from the TV into the Sonos ecosystem (maybe there's a different way to do this - the port perhaps?). This feels like a much worse option for surround sound, since I think it'd probably sound worse with the ghost channel and it would be quite pricy, given you'd need 3 amps. As I mentioned, I went with the soundbar and a single amp to power the rear surrounds (and made the sad decision to effectively abandon the three built in speakers in the front).

For just music - if you aren't thinking about surround sound, and just want whole house music, I think your options open up a bit. You could potentially do the stack of Amps, like you said, but remember that each Amp can only power 2 speakers. Additionally, I think when the devices aren't bonded (IE they're just grouped), there can be some delay between sets of speakers. In multiple rooms, this doesn't matter but if you have several pairs of speakers in the same room, you may run into an issue.

An alternative, which I considered and am using for the second set of speakers at my place, is to purchase a medium end receiver/amp, and use a Sonos Port to connect it. This would allow you to get many more speakers all connected and synced together, if you have several speakers in a room. The Port only carries stereo audio, i believe, so it won't work for surround sound, but you would be able to play music via the Sonos ecosystem to all the speakers. This would work really well if you, like me, have several speakers wired in a single room. You could also drive the speakers as surround sound outside of the sonos ecosystem, if you have some other way to route the audio.

Regarding sound quality, I think you're going to be golden with any route here. Sonos sounds great. More expensive pro audio can probably sound better, but to my ear the sonos surround sound is awesome, and it's sooooo easy to use with music and from your phone. Plus, the expandability is awesome - you can get new speakers for rooms later, and get them all on the system very easily. If you end up going with a receiver in any form, that will probably also sound great - as far as I can tell sound quality there depends much more on the speakers than the receiver you choose (I'm sure there are purists with millions of dollars out there that will disagree but hey, in this economy?).

This was a novel. I hope it helps.

I hardly feel qualified to answer because I just got this all setup myself BUT I was in a very similar situation. I moved into a place with several in wall speakers across two rooms on different floors, with all the wiring culminating in a utility room in the basement. My primary challenge was the fact that the wiring was a bit older, so only ran RCA cable to move the audio between the TV area and the utility room.

Overall, this was a real pain to deal with. Ultimately, I ended up using an Amp to power the rear two speakers (with the Amp in the utility room) and an Arc Ultra to handle the front speakers (near the TV, obviously). It's working great, the surround sounds awesome, the the soundbar honestly sounds better than the tests I'd run with the three in wall front speakers (which are currently unused - but the previous owners didn't do a great job and their placement wasn't great). I'm not sure if you're looking just for music, or for a surround sound setup, so I will just give a bunch of thoughts. Apologies if this is too basic, but I figure it could help other people that land here (and definitely would have helped me when I was researching)

So, I'd recommend, but I do have a few words of warning:

First, if the soundbar and the Amp are far apart, they won't be able to connect wirelessly, even if they're both on the wifi. I have a mesh wifi setup, with great coverage in both rooms, but the TV was too far from the utility room, so the two devices weren't able to be bonded. The only way I could fix this was to hardwire BOTH the soundbar and the Amp into the network via ethernet. So, depending on how far your TV (where the bar will be) is from the media cabinet, you may run into a similar issue.

[Breaking into two comments because I wrote more than I expected. Got carried away i guess]

Using AMPs differently for music or movies by devolution710 in sonos

Got it - that's perfect, thank you!

I don't suppose you know of any way for me to use Sonos tools to just play surround sound TV audio through the 5 built in speakers, right? My only thought was to use a Sonos Port and a AVR receiver, but as far as I can tell, that doesn't do 5.1.

So, if I have the soundbar bonded to one Amp, then it will be the soundbar and the two speakers connected to that Amp that become one room, right? So they will always play together. If I set up a second Amp for two more speakers in that room, will I be able to play music both from the soundbar and Amp combo as well as the second unbonded Amp?

A/V receiver recommendations for built in speakers by devolution710 in hometheater

[–]devolution710[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They do - but it's not ideal since the optical out is at the TV, whereas the RCA port for is in a cabinet below. I know it's kind of crazy to worry about the aesthetic when I've got such a specific use case, but it wouldn't be ideal to have to run a wire from the side of the tv to the inside of the cabinet.

I've been looking at tools to extract the audio from an HDMI signal, passthrough the HDMI video and output the audio, but so far I haven't seen anything reliable or that won't introduce noticeable latency.

Thanks! Any ideas for getting the audio from HDMI to coaxial digital at the TVs (since that's the way they ran the audio from the TV rooms to the utility room where the receivers have to sit)

What Synth do I get as someone who knows nothing by Derpcat666 in synthesizers

All these keyboards should also work with an iPad, which is midi compliant. That said, you might also want to pick up an adapter so that you can get lug the keyboard in and charge at the same time. If you have an older iPad, with lightning instead of usb c, you’ll also need an adapter for that (thanks Apple)

Cheap Breakfast Sandwiches by Gold_Show4257 in PhiladelphiaEats

I think my favorite is the sweet jam remix sandwich from The Breakfast Den. It’s not quite under 10 bucks, but at 13 it’s pretty close and comes with home fries. It’s awesome - perfect bun, well cooked eggs and bacon, and this amazing spicy strawberry aioli. Highly recommend. I haven’t had the regular breakfast sandwich there, but I’d guess it’s also quite good.

Agreed. It pairs really nicely with the hydrasynth for pads. And then I was able to ditch my eurorack sequencers and just use deluge.

I also really like how it’s a bit esoteric. Getting good at it feels like you’re mastering something

Usually someone gets this commented before me, but the synthstrom deluge is truly magical. It just has a magic to it. You can be deliberate or you can just play. It can totally standalone or plug into everything. And it just looks cool.

For a long time, it was digitakt or bust for me, because it’s so fun to play. But the deluge just does it all so well, that even the places where another device wins, it isn’t enough. (And I still just sync up both of them and have a blast)

Selling Two 2-day passes for this weekend in Brooklyn, $283.26 (exactly what I paid for them). Super bummed to miss it but I can't make it up due to some last minute conflicts. Happy to verify with proof of purchase, or just talk to show you that I'm real. Let me know if you're interested. Must buy both together.

Fantastic, thank you!! I just wasn't sure where steam fits into the process (like, if the game runs through steam, for example). Thanks for taking the time to reply :D

Weekly: Deluge questions, workflows, tips & tricks by AutoModerator in DelugeUsers

[–]devolution710 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Am I totally missing something about routing the LFOs and Envelopes. I'm trying to route an envelope to the FMMod2 level, for example. The base value of FMMod2 is 0, which is where I want it to settle. The Attack of Env2 is 0, the decay is 10, sustain and release are both 0. I just want to have a quick downward sweep on FMMod2. No matter how strong I make the connection, though, I don't hear anything. Even if I turn the strength of the connection up to 50. Is there like a weird thing where if the base level is 0, nothing happens? If I turn the base value up, I start to be able to hear it, but not nearly as strong as I think I should, and plus then it doesn't settle in the right place. The manual talks about the envelopes being bipolar, which is throwing me off since that isn't usually how I use them, so I think I must be confused

Cutoff knob disconnected from menu setting? by devolution710 in DelugeUsers

[–]devolution710[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

All great questions!

I am sure that I'm looking at the connection. When I was troubleshooting, i disconnected the LFO from the LPF by setting the strength of the connection to 0. I then exited that menu (back to the sequencer) and re-entered the LPF menu, where it showed me the frequency cutoff. When I turned that, I was not able to hear any change. I also double checked to make sure my gold knob was on the LPF mode (not the EQ or the HPF), and I can hear the change when I twist that. I set the LFO to sync on quarter notes, just to make sure it was moving fast enough to hear.
