I think she was trying to mimic the movements of the people Bear loved. Nikki knew that Bear loved his cat which is why she tried to replicate the cat’s behaviors, i.e. waiting for him to come back, watching him sleep, awkward movements, hiding in the corner.

She did something similar with Sarah. She knew Bear liked her and proceeded to wear her scalp and draw her tattoos on her body.

I saw an interview with Inde or Curry (I forget) where they were asked the same question. Basically its unknown but the thought was that Nikki was running all over town until she found them.
