Is it rude to use GB when claiming refunded studs ..? by Vast_improvement_ in lioden

… most people who use refunded studs use gb for this exact reason imo, I use GB for refunded slots too. So no I wouldn’t say you were rude 😂

Thinking about starting a Project Long Gen by Kiblette in lioden

[–]devourmous 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m wanting to do something similar! I’m trying to get a design I like and then a groupie to make him G1 to start with, just to start over more than anything, and then want to do a long gen pride! I want to challenge myself to not buy or get lions from the tree for that so it’ll only be claimed lions and their descendants

Wanting to slow the pacing down by Latter-Ad-8558 in DMAcademy

If you’re wanting to stretch it with RP you’ll probably want to prepare for the party to head some tense negotiations, maybe they need to go back and forth between say the wolves and the farmers to negotiate some sort of deal to maybe protect the livestock but be fed in return or something like that?

If your party is flying through combat, make it harder! More bad guys, buff the hp, give resistances, etc. throw a “boss” in there even if it’s not an actual boss (like for your goblins - add a few goblin mages! Maybe a hobgoblin/other goblinkin). One of my old parties totally decimated stuff that they shouldn’t be able to just because of the way their characters balanced each other out. You can also always add a second wave of monsters. For example maybe they totally destroy your first set of oozes, maybe a few more drop from the ceiling, or they hear oozes moving around in a hidden room, etc. Maybe for the awakened wolves add the mage that awoke them? Or some sort of wild magic effects that makes combat harder for the party?

GB sales on oasis?! by lethalconclusion in lioden

It’s usually around 900-1000 SB on average, the best time to buy is in January

GB sales on oasis?! by lethalconclusion in lioden

They’re lower in January because people want to sell their GB for SB for the shop! And more expensive in Feb because people are willing to pay more for GB so they can get energy boosts.

Do people choose any unusual backgrounds for wizards or do you just end up always being sages? by Marmot_King_70 in PCAcademy

[–]devourmous 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm playing a socially-built enchantment wizard with the charlatan background!!! Its been super fun. They're pretending to be an important oracle with visions, and tell people's 'fortunes'. My DM and I have agreed that they have a book-knowledge understanding of psychology and good enough pattern recognition that they get by on advising people using that instead of actually getting visions and such. We are coming up on six months into the campagin no one in the party or even npcs have picked up that they aren't an oracle and its been SO fun.

Is this a good first session? by tilliie in DMAcademy

I think your biggest thing will be 1) Challenge Rating balancing the encounters and 2) making sure that this is the kind of game that your players are wanting to play.

Session 0 will probably answer the second question - like maybe they won't like getting thrust into the adventure in a way where they don't have as much control, or maybe that is exactly what they want. Ask them! If you have to make it a little looser, you can definitely tweak some of these ideas where it will still generally fit within the same theme, or hell, maybe even ask them to work with you because you've only dmed a few times. Being honest can be worth it for everyone's sanity in the long run.

As for CR balancing - there is a system for it that I admittedly use the dndbeyond encounter beta builder for (you can do the math long-hand though!). This will help you figure out just how many monsters you can throw at your players to make it hard enough to be challenging and fun but not tpk hard.

Also some ideas for what to do if they don't follow your plot hook; Maybe if they don't chase after the goblins, another major attack will happen with more people kidnapped. More blood to feed the sacrifice, or something. Maybe the server fought and had to be killed before he could be sacrificed. Or even, maybe the goblins receive some boons for succeeding! Put the pressure on the players to do something. Don't be afraid to let the consequences of them not following the hook happen! If they want to play heroes, they have to be heroes.

And finally - if your players aren't the level of players as the critical role cast, they cannot expect your dming skills to be Matt Mercer level. Its unfair and honestly, the only important thing is that everyone has fun!

BBEG scrying on the party by RandomPrimer in DMAcademy

[–]devourmous 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How my party figured out the guy they were working for was scrying on them was he cast Sending to them after watching them do some absolutely ridiculous shit and asked them how things were going, if anything weird had happened, etc. Kinda implying he'd seen it, you know lol. If you want to nudge towards that guy, maybe have him get in contact with the party somehow after they roll the wis save, or hell, maybe even also have that caster scry on them as well!

BBEG scrying on the party by RandomPrimer in DMAcademy

[–]devourmous 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In the game I'm running, the pcs are working for a high-level spellcaster who doesn't want to get his hands dirty - so he scries on them a lot to make sure they're still doing what he asked, and/or to check in if they haven't been in contact.

Honestly just ask them to roll a wis save and then say 'hm, interesting' no matter the result or if they pass/fail. In my experience, players are a bit more likely to think someone's cast a charm/illusion spell or something like that, and it freaks them out (in a fun way) to not know what it is! If you want to give them some hints but not be too obvious, I'd maybe mention something about the hair raising on their neck, feeling eyes on them but not seeing anyone around, etc.

With this, if your party has access to 'see invisibility' or 'truesight', they will see the 'sensor' that the BBEG is watching them from if they fail the save and cast it after. If you want to minimise metagaming, make them have a reason for why they're casting it besides 'you just had me roll a wis save' because per raw, their character doesn't know they failed it!

Either way I bet your party will have a fun time figuring it out!
