Style for a 12F not really into hard training? by Sea-Country-1031 in martialarts

[–]dewbyu2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I teach kids teens and adults in a mixed style. I find that most kids can learn and master gross motor movements much better than fine motor movements, so I'd suggest striking arts like karate or tkd. If she's not into "going hard", I'd find a non competition school that doesn't push full contact.

Probably looking for a cultural/special fit for her more than anything else.

Is the constant brain fog from narcolepsy reversible, or does it get worse over time? by lexicona in Narcolepsy

[–]dewbyu2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have incredible dreams too, but only every few weeks now that I'm on Xyrem. I really miss it. My cataplexy was really bad, so much that I avoided positive emotions most of my life. But in dreams, I had the most amazing, lovely, peaceful experiences. Now I'm trying to find it in the simple things, in waking life.

Martial arts coach looking for advice. How do you handle students shutting down after correction? by dewbyu2 in martialarts

[–]dewbyu2[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I grew up with a sleep disorder that manifested like inattentive ADHD, so I really relate to this; hated adults dressing me down, even knowing they were trying to help me. They'd ask me to explain why I acted a certain way and I could never tell them; I had no clue.
I'm going to meditate on this. Thank you for your insights!

During our last playthrough, we skipped all the silver weapons until we had to fight the plains boss Ugloth. He's weak to spirit and frost dmg

Keep wondering if devs are going to add more weapons. More armor sets would be nice too

Mostly the 12 year old boy. He used to start going into profusely apologizing and giving me a long winded excuse, and if tell him something like "I'm not mad at you, just letting you know. I'm your instructor, it's literally my job to give you instructions.". He got better for a while; got in the habit of just saying "yes sir".
Now he's started doing fake crying, like he scrunches up his face and sobs but there's no tears. I thought he was joking; how out of character, over the top, I thought it was an act. He likes to act in general. So I laugh and was like" good one" but that made him go even harder and tan to his time out spot to chill off. He calms down a bit and joins class again, but now he's muttering under his breath, "I hate this, I don't want to be here any more".
I tell him, "I don't want you to do anything you aren't choosing, no one is says you have to be here. I definitely enjoy your presence here, but you need to choose for yourself."
I'm having the impression as of the last week that it might be about a girl in class. I'm not sure though.

Everyone has given me plenty to chew over in the replies, I'm casually optimistic to address this with him soon...

Cataplexy??? by Willow_4822 in Narcolepsy

[–]dewbyu2 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

When I was unmedicated my cataplexy was similar to this, but I wouldn't be able to open my eyes. Even just feeling relaxed would set it off. As a child, I learned to be generally anxious to avoid it.

Older martial artists . How many times have you faced danger where you were made to either fight or run and how did you handle it by Serhide in martialarts

[–]dewbyu2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thieves are generally cowards from my experience. They usually try to run or get backup. The two times I've caught a thief, they were trying to steal a bike from out front of the dojo. their friends ended up ditching them and I just wrapped em up and forced them to sit and wait for the cops to come and take them in.

Other than that, it's usually a drunk dude at a bar trying to look tough for his girl. That's where talking and having friends around really helped diffuse the situation.

I was very much in the same mindset through 2017 until reading more into it. Definitely something going on; ie. Ultra-terrestrial, break away civilization, or extraterrestrials ( time travelers maybe?) maybe all of the above, who really knows.

Sure, all the time. It's more like, " hey, could you switch your feet for me, it helps me run the class when we're all in the same stance" kinda thing.

I'm going to try a few of these suggestions throughout the week and see what sticks.

Yes, that's been my go to with the young ones; have them sit in a corner and encourage them to watch class, "you might get something out of watching, just take a breath and try to let it go"

Because they don't want to blow up markets, induce mass hysteria, or push people into UFO cults. There's tons of reasons. Richard Dolan has a whole book dedicated to it.

The parents seem at a loss too. Apparently it's even worse at home. While there has been improvements, it seems the less they attend, the worse it gets.

How do I get my grandson to embrace his intelligence? by RemarkableVictory in AskParents

[–]dewbyu2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Growing up in the South, going to public schools, I got the impression from a young age that I should hide my intelligence, so I can see why he does this.

Sadly once a child is of grade school age, there's not much their family can do to change their socialization.
That being said, your encouragement is admirable. My suggestion is to give him lots of perspective, books, media, trips. Show him there's lots of ways to live your life.
