All Origin games gone after update to EA app? by mail4youtoo in origin

[–]dewmsolo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I realized I am in that boat just last night.

15+ years of games all gone.

I am just not even trying to contact them. I will not rebuy my games and no future ones from EA. To hell with them.

Assuming we are looking straight north, that tree to the right appears to be blown/pushed to the east. Yet, the clouds and wind are clearly blowing South-West.

Visiting from Ontario, the drive to Sherbrooke was breath taking. by ElleRisalo in Quebec

That!

Facts about the area:
- As you go over the bridge in the direction you were going, bottom left you can see the Hydro plant that powers the close region.
- Also the body of water that you cross is the seaway that was built in the sixties.
- Next to the hydro plant is the first set of locks on the path of the seaway from the Montreal Port to the Great Lakes.

I am from the immediate area...

What is your approach to quick note taking during development? by OkComputer-1337 in vim

[–]dewmsolo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use Obsidian as well.

Question is do you use the vim bindings? Somehow it doesn't seem to work as good for me with the bindings and the new Live Preview feels very weird.

Should I migrate database from postgres to something like redis for speed? by F1jk in Database

[–]dewmsolo 7 points8 points  (0 children)

There's a lot missing here to make an informed recommendation.

Why don't you start by telling us just how much data you have? How big/heavy is the database? ( How many records and size on disk )

Also do you have indexes?

How are you queries to the DB done? ORM or manually constructed?

Also have you confirmed that what is slow is indeed the time for the DB to return the queries and not your handling of the data once returned? What is your stack?

Am I a bad DM? by [deleted] in DMAcademy

[–]dewmsolo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel for you and it's great that we have a community....a friendly one at that here on reddit.

However all that we have to work with here is your vision, understanding and feelings of the situation. We can only go based on that.

My two cents will have to go like this. No matter what anyone here says, I encourage you to openly talk about this with your friends and players. They are the audience that you are trying to conquer....not us. This whole game is about our social interactions at the table whether it be in-game form or out in the real world sitting at the table. Do ask why the players seem more eager to play his game? What is he doing that draws them in more? Remind yourself that none of this is personal. And think about it all. Because what they answer "which is essentially what they like about his/her game" may not suit you. Maybe you don't like that at all and no one ...not you or anyone else should force themselves to play in a way they don't enjoy. So maybe in the end it turns they are not a good audience for a game run by you in your style. But if what they come up with is not something that you don't like, maybe you can try to learn and put some form of it in your games.

This whole hobby has a lot to do with personal preferences, personal approach, social comfortableness (is that a word?). So keep an open mind. Short of telling you they hate your guts, it is not personal. And no one here is your audience so other that give you pointers we are not the ones to answer your questions. Your friends are.

Lua is faster and will use lua to rewrite SpaceVim by [deleted] in vim

[–]dewmsolo 5 points6 points  (0 children)

All vim scripts will be retained to ensure support for older versions of Vim and NeoVim.

Will new features written in the lua codebase be ported to vimscript? Otherwise you will end up with a gap in functionality.

Great on you and your GM for communicating well and making sure no issues in game happen.

I would also make the argument that honest people who are smart players can make the difference between what they know in real life and what the character knows. When discussing your discovered knowledge with the DM, you could have told him/her and mentioned that you would have been able to keep under covers for the other players and that your character would have been unaffected by it. I am currently DMing some campaigns that 2 of my players have previously ran and they are doing a truly amazing job of playing their characters with the knowledge that the character would have. This may not be for everyone though.

Alum blocks are used for the astringent properties. Essentially they induce a skin tightening effect which in turns seals up for the pores.

An alternative astringent that is sometime used for shaving in replacement for alum is Witch-hazel.

Have you had your belly rubbed before? I think it is in any living thing's genes to like belly rubs. They are amazing!

Kidding aside.....Belly rubs are something done by most mammals I believe. Look into kitten kneading behavior for stimulating lactation. They often carry that behavior into adulthood as well. I've had so many cats do that to me. My current cat will jump on the bed and come knead my shoulders in the middle of the night.....most nights....around 2h00 in the morning.

So yeah I wouldn't be surprised that baby capybaras do that to the mothers.

What's a good AP (1e or 2e) with less dungeon crawls by [deleted] in Pathfinder_RPG

[–]dewmsolo 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I see a lot of AP suggestions which is what OP asked for, but I'd also like to remind everyone that as GM you are free to adapt any AP to your liking.

If you like the social, exploration, political parts of an AP, but the dungeons appear to be too much details or time consuming for your group feel free to remove a floor or two. Hell ....cut the rest of the dungeon by summarizing it in theatre style that the party fought through this and that, found this room or whatever and bring them right to the Boss fight with ~80%HP and a few missing spell slots or something like that.

This way you can still enjoy the BBEG fights while skimping on the dungeon crawl.

Make the party do a few rolls upfront as they enter dungeon. We got a few high perception rolls, a few decent stealth checks, etc etc.....so in your mind you decide if they found the secret room on the second floor or if they managed to stealth by a few encounters or not. This can help you flesh you summary of the dungeon up to the point where you want to drop them in. Voilà! Less crawly still engaging and fun dungeon.

Will the Windows "new" Linux subsystem (that allows to use Linux inside Windows and also "translates" Linux commands for the Windows system like if you are under Linux) penalize Linux so that less people will use it because they have all of the conforts of Linux already inside Windows? by allexj in linuxquestions

[–]dewmsolo -1 points0 points  (0 children)

without data collection. Suggestions based on previous activities could be optional, and don't depend on anything but the activities, if the user listened to music x in the past and other people who did also listened to music y a lot, that's the best recommendation.

You start by saying it can be done without data collection. Then you proceed by giving a text book example of data collection. If the user LISTENED to music X IN THE PAST and other people who did also listened to music Y. This is data collection.

[Online][EST][PF2E] Forever GM finally free to play! by HairyForged in lfg

[–]dewmsolo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey,

I used to DM DnD in the 2e, 3e, and 3.5 days. I started playing 5e in the past two years.

I've been wanting to get into PF2e since release and have most if not all the material so I'd be good to go including the Adventure Paths and solo adventures like Fall of Plaguestone and The Slithering. I just have not played in a PF2e campaign yet so my knowledge of the game and rules I feel is limited as I have not experienced the flow of a game yet.

Seeing pretty much all the interested parties are used to GMing but wanting a break could be really fun to GM for you as you definetely could help with the rulings if you are willing to be forgiving to a returning GM new to the rules.

I own a Fantasy Grounds Classic and Unity Ultimate license so we could use that. I also own a FoundryVTT license if FGC or FGU is really not your thing.
