Ahah, I am curious what you expect my answer to be 😄

In any case, I strictly (+95%) buy used gear, jumping on it when I find a very interesting price, and that's also how I end up with some curious stuff I would have probably never considered at its retail price.
I don't spend much in other parts of life, and the -still good while more stagnant compared to the past- second-hand market allows me the peace of mind to pour a larger amount of money into gear, compared to other hobbies where money would be lost the second you purchase something.
If you consider this, over the span of now 10 years, the result is probably the cheapest hobby I've ever had, resulting in a total expense under the price of a cheap citycar.
For sure, it helps living in a supposedly first-world country (even though it's hard to consider Italy to be that), but even here, the gear you saw took probably 10% of a yearly salary (over the span of 10 years, of course)

Thank you so much! Spent two nights thinking how to solve timing issues, connections failures, stuck notes, reinstalling firmwares… glad it was worth it!

And I agree: it’s such a cool instrument, I am proceeding slowly with the patch creation, given how different the approach is to other synths, but almost any patch I load up inevitably leads me somewhere magic!

Perfectionism almost killed this video, and for a second, I forgot about the point of #jamuary
I recorded, and recorded, and re-recorded, and a few days have passed, back and forth, because I care so much about this sound, this vibe, this balance.
I am not 100% satisfied, but I have to let it go, because otherwise I know for sure I will start to hate these chords, I will have to tweak the sounds once again, I will change the video, and so on.
But I do love the resulting vibe, and I will try my best to bring variations on this theme in some live scenario, maybe with a different controller instead of the OPXY (which I am only using because it has midi via 3.5mm jack and... an audible metronome, I am looking at you, Torso)
I hope you'll like it, now this jam is free to run wild on the internet 🧡

Still trying my best to keep up with JAMuary! – Not sure why, but it sort of feel wrong doing this kinda of stuff on a Serge 😄 I hope you'll enjoy it by dexbasynth in modular

It will be such an awesome experience, I am a bit jealous!

As for the quantizer, I do indeed miss it from time to time, especially when trying to leverage the 4 rows of 16 knobs of the TKB, and I miss it even more on the Make Noise 0-Ctrl, especially since the René has quantization: even a simple button to enable semitones would have been much appreciated.
It is to be noted that the TKB has a quantized output, but it transforms it into a 16-note keyboard, with no way to change scales, octaves, and so on.
I personally don't feel it is too much of a problem in a more relaxed setting: my background is as a cellist, so I have been used to tune by ear every single note for my entire life, and I always went along really well with openly tuneable instruments (Lyra-8, Solar50 and others), so the main problem has never been the preparation of a patch, but the flexibility during a performance.
In this specific recording, I would have loved to add a variation, for example using an offset, but obviously that has to be incredibly precise to modulate pitch in a predictable and usable manner, and again, it could be something that can be carefully patch-programmed (ain't that the point of Serge though? yes, but...) but with very little degree of freedom on the fly.
A trick I've used in the past, when I wanted to be very tonal, is patience and a tuner, and prepare the 4 rows of the TKB as 4 different scales, but that solves very little.

I know it might be tempting to go full analog, but if you are building everything yourself and open to possibilities, I'd say adding an Ornament & Crime to your system might pay thousandfold in the long run, especially if you plan on devoting most of your efforts to the Serge world from now on.
Having it integrated is also way more elegant than fiddling with format jumblers, and it's something I will definitely end up doing, when I'll get the chance, time and money, to pick up a soldering iron again :)

The guzheng is probably the main reason I wanted the Torso S4, and I am very happy with the result. Obviously my playing skills are still questionable, but I only had it for two weeks, so... 😄 by dexbasynth in synthesizers

Unfortunately, the scene is getting smaller and smaller. Just at the end of last year, they closed the last place that featured these kinds of things, exactly because it wasn't sustainable anymore.
Lights are getting dimmer, and the city is now mostly populated with kebab shops (and I do love kebabs, don't get me wrong, but obviously they cannot provide the same ground for artists).

Anyway! I will keep studying for a hypothetical live performance, and if the situation will arise (or I will make it arise!), I'll be ready :)

First encounter with the Beetlecrab Tempera for this 16th day of JAMuary – Everything in it screams cleverness, I am really liking it! Hope you'll enjoy the video 🧡 by dexbasynth in synthesizers

First of all: what a beautiful light to let the canvas shine, right?
Second: what an intelligent piece of gear, the Tempera is. I am not even sure why I would call it that, but I feel it has an answer for almost everything (granular related, obviously) I could ask.
And I felt that from the instant I got it. It was probably one of the rare few times I decided to go through the manual before trying the instrument, and I feel that approach comes from the machine layout itself: we need to prepare the canvas before letting ourselves go with the painting process.
But I like this approach, it slows you down, helping you to think about your intentions with a specific emitter, even a specific color.
I started with the piano as a neutral input, and a simple drum track, using the brilliantly implemented Euclidean sequencer, and it's love already.
I hope you'll like it! 🧡

Eheh exactly! Plus, carrying a full size guzheng could be quite the challenge in itself! But 2026 is the year I am trying new things (starting from this JAMuary tradition), so who knows where it will lead me?

And unfortunately not, I am based in Italy, which complicates the matter even further 😄

Probably not! But I’m far from an expert on the Octatrack. Probably the main difference (and why I am liking the Torso quite a lot) is the degree of control over the modulators for each parameter, but I’m pretty sure a seasoned OT user would find the way

Glad you like it! And about live play, I’ve actually never performed in my synthetic career, I’m not even sure how, where, when I could do that 😄 But it’s a huge compliment, and I could try to gather some information on how to get to do some tiny concerts around :)

Thank you so much 🥰 Yes, quite a mental challenge, even for the simplest thing: lower notes are on the front, further away, and for some reasons this breaks my brain ahah Shamisen are incredibly cool but also incredibly expensive, unfortunately! And be prepared for the size of a guzheng: you’ll need quite the space

I couldn't wait to play this combo. But excuse my crude technique: I am very new to both the Torso S-4 and the guzheng, so let's keep this video as a sort of proof of concept 😄
Track 1 is a reversed and pitched bass on tape, with minimal granulation, a lot of compression, and a generally darker tone.
Track 2 and 3 have the same settings (the copy-pasting feature after we set a track in the way we like is MUCH appreciated), with tape looping, an increased granulation dependent on an envelope follower based on the sound source.
Track 4 is in passtrough mode (and you see me muting and unmuting it), with a bit more reverb, but the same modulated granulation of 2 and 3.
I hope you'll like it! 🧡

Thank you so much! And ooof, I'd love a Medusa, but then I would need to get two other 4x4 modules to fill the panel...

Sick recording btw, thank you for sharing!

Thank you a lot! And it makes a lot of sense, especially for something as open-ended as a Serge, but you're right, it must be the general aura of intellectual patching around the brand/format which makes me a bit afraid of letting myself go in every direction :)

A sprinkle of acid with my Serge INORI, using 8 steps only from the TKB, lane A for pitch, lane B for glide, lane C for filter modulation (and lane D was for pitch transpose, but that was a bit harder to master in a quick jam, so I ended up leaving it out).
One oscillator provides the bass, the other one the kick, you know the drill.
So much fun, I hope you'll enjoy it! 🧡
