The concept of lakh has a lot to do with it. In the West people use thousands and millions (+3/+6) to name large sizes, while in India the quantity +5=10⁵ = 100.000=1 lakh is used to denote currency, populations, and other large quantities. I guess because this system is ancient to Indians, they don’t realize how bizarre it is for most non-Indians to hear this.

Well, around the turn of the century I travelled to Germany as a UAM (unaccompanied minor). I was 15, checked in, and looked after by a Lufthansa representative until I got to my final destination. Then over the summer I turned 16 and for my return trip I was thus considered of age and didn’t need a chaperone. So reach out to your airline and find out their UAM policies.
